I've been keeping track of hidden service email providers here: https://www.reddit.com/r/emailprivacy/comments/3gf2ta/email_providers_with_onion_tor_hidden_service/
This is what I'm talking about:
Innocence.se which had no clearnet site, only http://inocncymyac2mufx.onion as their hidden webmail service site was subject to DoS attack since Dec 2015. The service essentially disappeared since then because nobody could access it.
BitMessage.ch had an hidden service at http://bitmailendavkbec.onion. Their onion site only, but not the clearnet site, has been under DoS attack since at least Jan 2016. Nobody has been able to use their onion site since then. /u/AyrA_ch is the admin and has no indication of who's doing it or why.
RuggedInbox.com's "HS stack" was being DDoS'd off and on since around early January 2016 and later their clearnet domain too, up until their service was discontinued 18 March 2016 due to what I'm sure was them just saying "fuck it" after being unable to provide this FREE service. /u/ruggedinbox had no indication of who was doing it or why and said they were looking into it. Some redditors, like u/Derrick4Real and /u/-0r5-inks suggested, somewhat credibly, that this kind of thing is NSA/GCHQ's m.o.
Now Mail2Tor.com's onion site (http://mail2tor2zyjdctd.onion) but not their clearnet site (which is useless for email service) has been down or unable to connect since April 1st or 2nd. I suspect it's due to a DDoS attack though that hasn't been confirmed.
Meanwhile, Sigaint is clearly the most used hidden service free email provider. Yet somehow they seem to have escaped the service problems others are running into. I don't think they're even experiencing DDoS attacks.
I'm not saying Sigaint is being these attacks. I have no proof of that or I would, but it is rather suspicious to me. Why isn't the onion email provder with the most users being attacked? Why only the smaller ones? Maybe Sigaint is next after all these other services are crushed by DDoS... I hope not.
Why is this happening and who is doing it?
