Never used a PO box before...Is this normal?

I have something coming in the mail, sent to a PO box. It's actually a buddy's PO box, but he says he's never used tracking before so he's not used to this. Is it normal for tracking to say "Notice left (no secure location available)"? I would have expected it to say "Delivered to box/front desk" as it has in times past when I've used, say, a UPS box. But, having never used an official USPS box I'm not used to it. If someone can shed some light here, that would be great...
