I ordered a small amount (<2g) of something. It didn't arrive so I contacted the vendor and he said he didn't pay enough postage on some orders but that I have nothing to worry about and he can resend it.
Obviously if the vendor is using bogus return address I do have something to worry about. My address would be compromised and I would need to clean house. (Please no Belize or house burning jokes...this is a bad day for me). I guess the pack will go to wherever undeliverable mail goes. How much time do I have until it gets opened? Or is that unknown (could be today, could be months from now)?
The vendor implied that this is not an issue, though. Is there some alternative to vendor using fake return address so they could actually retrieve "return to sender" packs or otherwise know that it won't get opened by gov? How else would this vendor be able to say "don't worry" short of lying?
I'm sure some of you will want me reveal the vendor. If they don't prove to me that things are OK I would like to but I don't know if I will because of doxing risk or other OPSEC issues. Thoughts?
Anything else that I should know or do?
Thank you.
It could be delivered to you postage due. It happens so much, some pay the PO in advance. If it goes to dead letter, they burn all letters. Packages are only opened to retrieve items of value, to later be sold. Unless there's reason for further investigation.
Maybe I have this confused with another country, but I think everything at dead letter has to sit for 6 months, providing an ample opportunity to be claimed.
If the "fake" return address is a bureaucracy, they may very well pay the postage due for you.
