Working on a story about legislation to screen all packages entering the U.S.

A bill has been introduced in Congress that apparently would electronically track all packages that are entering the U.S., and allow different agencies to track whether they come from known terrorists or drug traffickers. It's called the Synthetics Trafficking and Overdose Prevention Act. I'm working on a story about this -- whom should I talk to? Is this something that would work, given that we already track packages in the U.S. but cannot intercept them all? Do we even do it well here? Would love to hear your thoughts!

You should talk to the congressmen and women that introduced the bill and support it. Personally I think it would work about as well as the current laws governing international mail work, not very well. This seems like a largely "feel good" "tough on crime" b.s. law that career politicians can point to and pretend they care before they go to do some coke and fuck some underage hookers/interns.

I don't understand how this law would help anything?

It's called the Synthetics Trafficking and Overdose Prevention Act.

Thanks for the info.

Do we even do it well here?

Do what well?

If this act passes, which it might, it will not stop the flow of fentanyl into the USA from China. Some packages might be caught, but it will not and can not stop the problem. The problem is caused by the war on drugs. Even Tom Ridge, one of the pushers of this totalitarian trash legislation, said it's won't stop the flow of fentanyl.

Ridge said the system is intended to be safer than it is currently, rather than foolproof. "It's about risk management, not risk elimination," he said.

The totalitarian's answer is always more surveillance, more checks, more inspections, more monitoring, more breathing down your neck, and less privacy.

FACT: THE CARNAGE WILL CONTINUE UNTIL THE WAR ON DRUGS ENDS. THE WAR ON DRUGS IS THE PROBLEM.

Why do I say that? The reason people buy fentanyl from China and put it on the street as heroin is because heroin is expensive and hard to get or import because of the war on drugs. Fentanyl is much cheaper, much more potent, cheaper to produce, easily cut and relatively easy to import (compared to heroin). It's just economics that has brought fentanyl powder to the streets of America. End the war on drugs, and you will end the mass death.
