To VPN or not to VPN...

That is my question..

Why do some say its a bad idea to use a VPN in conjunction with TOR?

Let's say "they" some how broke your anonymity on TOR, they'd end up at the IP from the VPN, right? So that would just be another layer of security, correct? Or am I missing something here? (I'm guessing I am)

A VPN protects your IP address from being viewed. It uses an encrypted connection to do this. Certain VPN providers do not keep logs of whom is connected to that connection. So even if LE were to ask for your original IP they wouldn't be able to get it. Anonymity is key! My recommendations would to be to use a VPN when connecting through TOR.

Edit: ALso what /u/SmokenPotent said. It hides what you are doing from your ISP which is a good thing to do when connecting to the TOR NETWORK because you ISP can see when you are connected to TOR.

I've got VPN but how can one connect to VPN in conjunction with Tor? Doesn't the official tor website recommend against VPN?

As far as I knpw VPN just hides what your doing from your ISP. But don't qoute me.

Your ISP can tell you are using TOR, but not what you are looking at. A VPN would prevent them from knowing you are using TOR. We recommend VPN with TOR
