Mailbox question

I am just wondering if it would be okay to raise the flag on my mailbox even if I have no outgoing mail. This would be a good indicator to know if the mail has finally come (I'm not fond of checking the box every hour or so and realizing that the mail hasn't come yet). Could raising the flag with no outgoing mail be annoying to the mailman or confuse them in any sort of way?

Would it be a good idea to have maybe a fake (or real) letter in the mailbox when I raise the flag, or does this not matter?

I would imagine doing it once a week or 2-3 times a month would not annoy them. Its not like your doing it everyday so you know when to check the mail (that would definitely be slightly inconsiderate). If you want though you could stick a letter in there to be mailed off on the day your expecting your package. Idk about a "fake letter" though. If you get any mail that doesnt belong to anyone that lives in the house you could just stick that in there to be "returned due to wrong address".
