Drug traffickers find anonymity via USPS, private mail services, authorities say

Postal inspectors have intercepted a package in North Charleston that contained $10,000 in cash, court records show. The recent discovery was indicative of what authorities described as a "frequent" misuse of federal and private mail services to sell and distribute illegal drugs and other controlled substances. An inspector reported being suspicious of the package Jan. 5 while examining Express Mail at a processing and distribution facility in North Charleston, according to court records. "I noted it was being shipped to California which I know from training and experience is a source region for shipment of narcotics," the inspector detailed in an affidavit while applying for a search warrant

Cash isn't illegal in the mail but goooood luck getting it back from them. You have to send in so much personal information to claim the cash. Had a buddy who had ~$3500 get seized by the post office and he's not even going to attempt to get it back.

More than 12% of the US population lives in California. It can't be the case that a person can simply say "I know there are a lot of drugs there" and all those people's right to the privacy of their mail just goes away.
