So I have been expecting this one package from Europe to arrive but despite some other packages from the same vendor having arrived in a timely manner previously, this recent one was taking it's sweet time - about a week or so late. Yesterday I see the mail truck out of my window and the following happens:
My landlord is nosy as hell and he was around. I saw him walk up to the mailman, who handed him a package, and some words were exchanged - I'm assuming he was asking if my landlord knew the name on the package. Then I see the landlord with the package still in his hands walking up to my front door. The mailman is following him. Landlord knocks, I open. The following conversation takes place:
L: holding up a brown large envelope Hi, do you know the name on this package?
Me: stares at the package Well yes, this is [the first name of my relative] who collects [certain things] and sometimes ships them to me [to avoid sales tax].
L: bends the package to check if what my relative collects could be in there Yes but what about the last name?
Me: I don't know. It must be misspelled.
L: Well it looks like the postage is due on this. Do you want to pay the guy?
I look at the package again, and then at the mailman who is just standing there looking at the ground. At this point I'm thinking landlord fuck off you cunt, stop touching the package, and asking all these questions, too. WTF?!
Me: No, I don't have any money on me right now.
Mailman: Well here's a slip. You can pay and pick it up later.
I take the slip and close the door, and start analyzing the following:
- the mailman was not the usual mail lady. I can't say for sure but I don't think there has ever been a man delivering in my area. It's always one of the two ladies, never a man.
- he looked like he didn't know what he was doing. I wouldn't call it nervous, but kinda lost.
he had headphones in one ear. The ones with a mic than come with any cellphone.
the package did not have ANY postage on it. No stamps, nothing. No return address either. That vendor has always shipped with postage (not sure about return address), so why the fuck would the package NOT have postage on it this time.
there was no origin stamp on the package. You know those round stamps with wavy lines that at least have a date and origin postal/zip code on them? Wasn't any on the package. Nothing at all indicating that it went through a foreign postal system, apart from an Air Mail blue sticker, but that means nothing.
Am I being overly paranoid or was that a CD?
EDIT: Thanks to everyone, even people being dicks. Thanks also to /u/ayyyyyThrowaway. I do believe that if this was a CD then my landlord got inadvertently involved, because he's nosy and is always up in everyone's business. He just happened to be hanging around outside when the mailman came, and thought he would helpful in some way.
If it was a CD I don't think they would have had your land lord perform it. Probably just a weird mistake with your relatives package.
