Computer encryption

Ok im kinda a noob to harddrive encryption but how easy is it to crack encryption? Not like pgp but like an encrypted computer. Ive been looking around and all the encryption software looks like it just requires a password. So in my theory LE could just run a password library and eventually it will get in?,

Or is there one with like a key you can put on a usb drive and keep them separate in case something happens??

It all depends on the encryption key length. Encryption algorithms which we use today, the standard is AES cannot be decrypted without a key. If you have 512 bit key (which is around 20-30 characters if it would be an password) it cannot be cracked. And when I say it cannot be cracked I don't mean it will be really hard but I mean that you will require a computer the size of earth and a longer time than the beginning of the universe to crack. You would have to try all the possible combinations. That is because the complexity increases exponentially. With modern computers even 256 bit passwords are enough (12-14 characters) to prevent from cracking in a lifetime.

Sure if you have a 6 character password LE can just try all the combinations and succeed in a couple of hours. And when you said password library the nearest thing is a dictionary attack. Dictionary attack is trying all words as password which is a lot less than trying all combinations. But this works only if you use a word as password which is really not recommended.

Usually with encrypting hard drives, for example with BitLocker which is an built in encryption program for windows it creates a key file like you said and you can save it on a USB, other removable media or even printing it. This is safer than using a password because it is larger and you don't have to remember it like you would with a password.

With a secure enough password, they aren't cracking it with current technology for hundreds of years. Same reason you cant steal anyones bitcoins. You can try to crack the private key but its not happening. I forget the technical term, but you can also use dummy passwords that make it look like they got in, but you just have a few harmless files that show that they were decrypted. While u are still hiding tons of other stuff with real pw.

Just use 123456. GOLDEN!

I dont think there is a usb key drive that your talking about but I dont know and as for whole harddrive encryption I think it all depends on what os your using.

Use veracrypt.
