Accused student drug dealer tells Oswego cops he left biz to focus on finals (Updated)

This was already posted but the article has now been updated with more info, looks like he sang like a bird! Even mentioned the vendors name.

"Dylan C. Soeffing, 21, told police he stopped selling marijuana and Xanax in April, thus ending a drug business that spanned more than a year and a half and netted Soeffing more than $170,000.

He wanted to focus on finals and graduation. After graduation, he wanted to pursue a master's degree and live life, he told police. He'd been trying to stop selling drugs for the past year, but the money was too lucrative, he told police. On April 22, he made his final deposit from marijuana sales: $8,500."

I thought everyone who uses DNM's, or at least uses DNM's and deals, knows that there is absolutely nothing to gain from talking to police, as you will only get yourself in deeper shit. WTF.

Interesting, from an OPSEC perspective:

At the time he gave his statement to police on May 14, Soeffing was awaiting delivery of eight pounds of marijuana, he said. At no point did the post office tip off Oswego police to Soeffing's habitual package pickups, Bonacchi said.

EDIT: I'll say it again -- what. the. fuck.

The small amount of marijuana found was a far cry from the pounds of marijuana he told police he'd been selling since the fall of 2013. In a statement he gave Oswego and state police, Soeffing said at its highest point, between December 2014 and early April, he bought and sold three to four pounds of marijuana weekly.

i'm sure that plea deals are very very enticing for anyone who says anything about 'darknet markets'. This is all speculation - i should't say "i'm sure" - just that I think it's highly likely. I've never even used DNMs, I just find the whole thing interesting as an econ major/redditor (as i'm sure many other lurkers do), so I could be way off base. anyway - back to the pleas. I have a very strong feeling that just getting the media article out there results in a strong plea / something his lawyer would use as leverage. Basically - any DNM bust that is in the media (and thus here - as we talk about it) - it feeds the intimidation for buyers and potential buyers, and so its leverage for a plea that the public defender advises these folk to take. in this case i doubt he knew they had nothing, so his lawyer was like what if we could tell you about the 'murky dark internets'..... boom da is there with a plea. in this case he shit all over himself, but that's just the way she goes.

TBH reading the story I read that the search warrant was executed with help by the Financial Crimes and Computer Crimes units, why would they both be involved if they didn't previously know what it was about? Prolly either the postal service said something or something to do with how he was purchasing BTC maybe

Those numbers would have been closer to a quarter-million dollars had he not had about $80,000 stolen from him this year. Since February, Soeffing was the victim of six theft attempts, of which four were successful, he told police.

That is a pretty steep loss %. The article doesn't mention how they found him, but it did mention that the Financial Crimes and Computer Crimes unit was involved. That could mean either a darknet investigation or a bank turning him over.
