Protonmail now open for everyone*

*until June 17th

Protonmail is a security and privacy minded email service hosted in Switzerland. Upon account creation you create a login password, and a password to decrypt your mailbox. Here's a short list of their features:

You can read about them here.

Last but not least, the link needed to create an account without waiting for an invite: https://protonmail.ch/privacyforall

I've been using them for months now for various purposes and have been really happy with their service. Definitely worth checking out if you need a reliable, secure, private email address.

A.) They require JS, and B.) do they offer tor email addresses?

I remember first hearing about this! It looks very promising! It's great to see but I still do think PGP is a must for sensitive data, not matter how secure the email service appears to be.

They require javascript though.

No IP logs is interesting. How would they respond to Swiss court orders or pressure from prying entities? How about the data retention laws in Switzerland? Remember that Swiss data centers participated in Operation Onymous.

Thanks, exactly the kind of service I've been searching for. Will be fun seeing how much of a commodity an invite code will be a few years from now. An added bonus.

Finally!

I was waiting months for an invite, finally got one and used a screen-name that I dumped a while ago, so I was eagerly awaiting this so I can register another one. ;)

Too bad 'Jay' was yet again taken. :/

I just wanted to add that this isn't the defacto standard for the darknet, so if you use this service, use it with GPG for our uses.

However, this is a great transition from using gmail/yahoo or any other free email service. If they are for real about your inbox being encrypted with the extra key that you have to type in each time, that's a huge benefit from it being wide open to anyone.

The main thing to keep in mind is the NSA knows who you're communicating with no matter if it's encrypted or not unless you're using an .onion service. And even then, who really knows.

So yeah, no matter what, use PGP or GPG for sensitive shit. But for regular shit or for some transitional shit... Proton is the way to go. I either use it or https://tutanota.de/ for darknet stuff.

I'm down to learn some better alternatives if anyone has 'em...

Will they still be sending out invites for accounts registered before this date? I have a username reserved and waiting for an invite that I'd like to have...

This service does not actually provide any significant security for your communications. Please do not rely on it in any way for communications security.

End-to-End Encryption in the Browser is a Really Bad Idea.

Use GPG.

"Services" like this are the NSA's wet dream. Seriously.
