[CommunityDiscussion] Let's build an open source, community driven marketplace that enforces multisig and community chosen arbitrators.

It's time to start thinking outside the box where markets are concerned. The community here is strong and I know that we can build something together, that we can all trust and be proud of.

Are there any developers that would be willing to contribute to such a project? I've got some coding skills but not nearly enough to pull off something of this magnitude.

Who's on board and what will it realistically take to get this off the ground and do it smart?

OPSEC obviously needs to be the top priority with proper transparency in place to keep everyone honest.

Anyone care to brainstorm a bit?

Or use something like openbazaar

We need some sort of system that allows "on-site escrow" but "off-site wallets". Basically meaning all transactions are protected by the marketplaces escrow system but somehow bitcoins are not stored directly on the marketplace (e.g. you could use a coinbase wallet for the transaction but the marketplace's escrow would protect the transaction). In this process, when escrow is released a small % of the funds would be diverted to an on-site wallet as commission.

If we can have a site which still makes commission for the admins yet allows the user/vendor to have their own wallet which is not attached to the marketplace this would completely remove the risk of exit scams. If the admins for whatever reason did choose to close their marketplace they would only leave with the commission earned - all users would still have their BTC.

What I'm suggesting is probably much easier said than done though... I have no coding skills whatsoever so I don't even know if it's at all possible. All I know is that if we want to use a trustworthy marketplace the BTCs must remain in our own wallets - not a wallet attached to the marketplace.

If anyone has any thoughts on this please comment. I'd be interested to know if it's at all possible.

The Marketplace was a failure despite people spamming it in every thread for weeks. People just aren't very interested in learning how to use multi-sig when escrow works every time until one day it doesn't.

Props to /u/doxevolutionfund for the multisig + community arbitrators idea.

Perhaps allow people to apply for arbitrator position. Several arbitrators are chosen per transaction. Arbitrators give a security deposit to ensure lack of corruption, and as transaction progresses arbirators must act as jury. At the end, reward is given. It is not corruption free but it will at least decentralize. Listings can be simple text, no currency exchange; that is for arbritrators. All communication could be done off-site with PGP for verification as is currently used.

So, my vision:

1) craigslist-like site, only texts and pictures, with listings and feedback (help keep resource usage down and site fast loading)

2) arbitrator forum, reddit has many we could use a model but obviously beefed up

The less on the site and the more on existing generic resources, the harder to remove it and the safer. Listings and arbitrator forum are things that can be moved. PGP and email fill in the blanks.

I do not know though, I am welcome to comments.

Hey, well coding a market isn't that much of a deal. I am working on a prototype, since a week or so after posting a thread here. But more for fun and learning.

Bitcoin & multisig implementations are the biggest chunk of work in my mind.

The biggest challenge however, is to ensure thats a save and accessible system. There are a lot of markets out there with multisig, but people are not using it. Because its more work involved that just "buy" the item and FE or wait till it arrives and finalize.

And that in mind ideas like that sound maybe nice, but will never ever work on a broad range. Simply because it's not as easy and accessible as the good old markets. After experiencing the amazon like drug shopping, I don't belive that people are going back to a forum based trade. At least not a lot of them.

I think projects like OpenBaazar may be the future, because they are decentralized but it's still a long way to go.

In the end, I guess the rage will be loud and forgotten in a few weeks. And everyone will be back on old or new markets.

Seriously.. that's what openbazaar is developed for right now.

[2 Points] tex1s:

There's just no way an open source market place would ever work when there is as much as stake as there is with a dnm then being open source gives anybody a blueprint to look for exploits. Anybody could submit a malicious commit that even with thorough code review the vulnerability might not be obvious.

Getting a functioning website is only half of it, the most difficult part would be the system administrator role.

[1 Points] dnmordnmm:

what about using something like bitshares?

[1 Points] SecondChanceUsername:

direct deals (between buyer & vendor) with the use of longterm DN members (a council sorts) for arbitration.

[1 Points] blamehofmann:

Has this not been done before? I really this we can pull this off.

[1 Points] hd3slyde:

i used to buy direct from a dealer, i found him on a forum that used to be open but is closed now. it was all about opiates and other drugs but they were closed. i still have the guys info, i belive hes from cali but he only takes money gram, but hey he was legit for a while.

[1 Points] ShulginsCat:

Volunteer arbiters is a solid suggestion, I'm with you on that.

As for open source.. that's cool and all, but you'll be hacked into oblivion within weeks.

[0 Points] HeatherFeatherLove:

They could very well make a fake multisig on their site which they control with a backdoor to allow them to still get the funds. What is the point?
