Low risk international vs. mail forwarding company?

Hey, I'm ordering from Ireland and have two options for shipping. One is through normal post, which would go through (light) customs. The other is using a mail forwarding company such as Parcel Motel to ship to NI. This shouldn't go through customs, and opens up a lot of UK only vendors. However, I've heard reports of them randomly searching packages and I'm wondering how the risk compares between these two options.

Why wouldn't it go through customs?

I have literally never heard anyone mention anything on this whole subreddit about mail forwarding services. Probably because it's a bad idea. You don't use UPS because they're private and can open your mail at any time for any reason, I imagine it is the same for Parcel Motel.
