What ever happened to the old school strains?

I just recently got back into the hobby of smoking after a 10 years+ break.

I quite smoking when I got out of school and got a legit job. I don't like to deal with sketchy people, which seems to be every weed dealer I could ever find. "No I'm not going to give you $100 and have you go get my weed and bring it back to me next week"

After discovering DNM, researching and taking the plunge im happier then ever.

But.. Just out of curiosity why don't I ever see old school strains like Mowie Wowey, panama red, kind bud and so on?

Unless by 10 years, you meant 30-40 years then your request seems crazy dated. Its been a long time since buds like those were being marketed.

Strain names are often made up by whoever has the bag at the time

Why would you want it? The stuff now is much better.

"Kind bud" is a strain?

[3 Points] Thereisnofork420:

The main reason is that those pure strain genetics are gone. The strains you speak of were used to create more potent strains, so the originals were no longer needed. Thus they became "extinct." Unless someone has a bunch of ancient seeds still around, or has been keeping a plant alive/pure breeding them, strains like maui wowwy and the original purple haze no longer exist. People just call things what ever they want most of the time without actually mapping the genetic heratige.

Even if you were to find something with that name, you have no idea what you are getting.

This is my personal experience, not something I heard from someone.:

I sometimes donate my extra meds to dispensaries here in California. On several occasions I have brought some bud into a dispensary and the owner/manager/buyer will say, "What strain is this?"
I reply, "It's Granddaddy Purple."
Buyer, "Oh? I've already got some GDP. This stuff is now called Purple Hawaiian."

And that, my friends, is how your weed gets named in dispensaries.

I smoked them all

Your timeline is a little off, but those strains aren't around anymore because they were so popular.

Wait... How does that make sense? Those strains were so dank/beloved that nearly every grower started using them in their phenotypes, and eventually not a single pure seed of the strain was left.

So, the old strains all still exist, in the genetics of the new strains we're smoking :)
