If it's not open source, how can we trust it?

For a more open alternative to this device, check out the Onion Pi. With a Raspberry Pi model B running the Raspbian distro of Debian and a USB wireless adapter, you can build your own Wi-Fi access point that directs internet traffic through Tor.

But I would probably still advise using a privacy-oriented software bundle like TorBrowser or TAILS instead. Running a typical web browser through a proxy device could possibly leak identifying information if you are not careful enough. TorBrowser and TAILS take steps like destroying identifying information upon exit, obscuring your user-agent, and disabling JavaScript that most browsers don't. Even if you get one of these just to run typical web traffic through Tor, you run the risk of accounts on certain clearnet websites being flagged or even banned if they are associated with a Tor exit node.

probably not the best device for the "average" family or home
