Some users have requested support for VPNs in Tails to "improve" Tor's anonymity. You know, more hops must be better, right?. That's just incorrect -- if anything VPNs make the situation worse since they basically introduce either a permanent entry guard (if the VPN is set up before Tor) or a permanent exit node (if the VPN is accessed through Tor).
Similarly, we don't want to support VPNs as a replacement for Tor since that provides terrible anonymity and hence isn't compatible with Tails' goal.
Edit: This applies here as well.

This hides your Tor usage from your ISP.

i persoanlly think its a good idea as an extra layer of security, although this extra layer of security is only as secure as the vpn you use. if the VPN becomes vulnerable then you could be fucked.
so its worth it if you do it right. if you are only using it to hide your TOR usage from your ISP id also reccomend TOR bridges. they are much easier to use then setting up a VPN on a router and can be used in tails.

i always had trouble getting tails to connect to another router on a vpn. not sure how to set it up correctly. It locates the router and other connections work with the router, but my connection to it using tails don't sync correctly.

Recently i got one of these:
https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/free-software-wireless-n-mini-vpn-router-tpe-r1100
This little open source bad boy has two connections, one to modem one to computer/device. Also has wireless, and instructions to make it a dedicated vpn.
Set up looks like this: Usb tails>thinkpenguin router>modem>isp>vpn>tor>destination
Eventually if I need more security might go like this:
Qubes>whonix gw>whonix ws>thinkpenguin router>isp>vpn1>vpn2(not sure on this yet)>tor>destination
Qubes is better imo if you are technically inclined qubes is well worth the time
Biggest critique against using vpn with tor is that you have to trust your vpn(after all they can see the ip connecting to the servers) and pay with monero ideally-bitcoin can work but in the long run it will be more expensive and monero does the job better
So do your homework on your vpn. Do they keep logs? Can you sign up with just a secure email? Find out as much as you can about your vpn. If you are canada based make sure the vpn is in eastern europe, russia. If you are in Africa find one in asia, etc
