Can shelling out for an expensive lawyer really get you out of any kind of trouble?

Maybe not trouble but definitely reduced jail time. Where I live if you have no lawyer you get the max time. If you do usually only probation with a few classes.

Cost my friend $30kUS to get a federal mail fraud charge for receiving cash (LOT$ AND LOT$) dropped to a lesser charge of tax evasion and possession (had multiple lbs on hand when he was busted). In addition to the $30k lawyer bill he had to surrender his stuff (cars, boats, cash, gold). Cost him an estimated $250k-$300k in total. Greed is a bitch.

I was drunk one night and got separated from my group walking back from a party. Had these guys roll up on me trying to start shit. After somebody took a cheap shot and I realized I was on my own I sized these goons up. You don't really stand a chance against multiple people in a street fight but I wasn't planning on getting my ass beat. I had a knife on me so I went to work. Gave em the option to back off but one came up behind me and held me so the other could hit. Mistake. Slashed his arm open and put 6 holes in his ribcage. Got out from the guys grapple as the first guy stepped back and realized what happened. I flipped around to him and we were basically hugging because he still had my clothes in his grip. 5 deep stabs into his back and two just below his armpit in quick succession was what it took to get him off me. He slid to the ground with a strange look to his face. Found out later I punctured his lung, fucker. Last guy finally got the picture and booked it. I backed off and went to find my group, beaten but okay. Was arrested less than 2 blocks away. City, county, and state police all pulled up on us, was surreal.
Since it was my word against theirs I knew I had to get a good lawyer. 6 felonies totaling well over 30 years maximum. I ended up finding a firm & lawyer that fit the bill. Steep $12k retainer got blown through. Ended up costing me around $20,000 for the representation but it was worth it. This guy was an old prosecutor in my county and had friends on the other side still. Ended up with 1 year of probation, 12 visits & an entry drug test only. Had anger management classes full of drunks and wife beaters. 7 year suspended sentence over my head the whole time. It was pretty expensive considering I was defending myself but worth it. I didn't even spend a full day in jail. And I have a clean record. Forgot to mention I had a gram of chronic in my pocket. Had a green card at the time so I got it back after I made bail. Best blunt I ever smoked.

It would depend on your OPSEC and which part of your operations getting caught. If they isn't even evidence a competent lawyer should be able to get the charges dropped as long as you don't have a target painted on your back.

It can't get you out of 'any kind of trouble'. It can limit the damage and make all the difference, but in some cases you will be doing time - a good (not necessarily expensive) lawyer can make all the difference in how much.

Only Saul. You don't want a criminal lawyer, you want a criminal lawyer

If theyre federal, then youre pretty much screwed either way. A DNM charge would most likely be federal.

It seems like getting caught with drugs in the mail is a very cut and dry case. A lawyer would most likely be on damage control.

I'm assuming you have Umbreon in mind when you ask this.
Umbreon hasn't got an expensive lawyer. I think its one of his tall tails, to back up the claim that he has $100,000 of drugs buried in the woods
Even a cheap one would have told him that MXE and ketamine are scheduled, and he would be taking advice from his lawyer if he had one on retainer. Instead of an astrologer.
MXE users have had a lot of bad luck, but I told you that was just an aperitif to Umbreon's magic carpet ride. You won't receive your MXE because HE LITERALLY HAS SO MUCH OF IT THAT HE'S SCARED OF IT.
Some gay guy who was cruising him has been mistaken for an agent following him, and his hororscope said "follow your instinct"
So he's robbed you, whilst starting the myth of Unbreon's buried stash and baiting the hook for his next scam.
You were all telling him to put safety first and lay low for a while, forgetting that
a) nothing has actually happened
b) You don't know if there was ever an elite consortium, $100,000, or any drugs, because he hasn't posted a picture yet..
The burden of proof should be higher for an MXE vendor who appeared from nowhere than a Silk Road meth vendor, in a rational world. I said he was going to do you, you've been done, and you're still standing where he told you to wait thinking everything is hunky dory. "lets talk about his expensive lawyer while he goes to the woods to get us our MXE"
This isn't a rational world. I provide time-stamped photos of my stock every week, videos even, and nobody thinks I might actually be for real. Nobody even thinks to ask Umbreon for a photo of 100 grand's worth of drugs.
Like I said, he is driven alternately by overconfidence and fear, giving it the big "I am" one minute about being a long-term hardcore drug dealer, then "Ooh, I don't take drugs. I can't do anything illegal" the next. I think he only pretended it was "au revoir" instead of goodbye because he hates that I was right about him, the scurrilous con man.
Why he has to not post on reddit for 2 months I've no idea. Its Saturday now, so he will have been in a stupor somewhere for 24 hours. Hank and I have spent many hours with him on instant messenger listening to his crazy lies and constantly-changing back-story. When we got fed up of it, he turned out to be incredibly fragile, mentally.
He still managed to run rings round RC customers, even with his broken brain. Have you ever had the feeling you've been swindled?

I got caught trafficking cannabis from California to Texas they didn't have the best evidence in me so after more than $15000 I only got 5 years Probation and that's with my DUI I got as well. So with what I got caught with and what I was doing I got off easy they wanted to give me 3-5 years state jail.

No, Umbreon, only intimidating the jury and kicking the witnesses can do that.

The old adage applies here - you get what you pay for
Not necessarily. A lawyer isn't a miracle worker. And really you need a great lawyer, not necessarily an expensive one - although the two are definitely correlated. However there are expensive bad lawyers out there too.
A good lawyer will mitigate damages. Sometimes that means you get off, sometimes it means you get plead down much lower than you "deserve", for lack o a better word.
Nothing is guaranteed. Sometimes the prosecution fucks up and you walk. Sometimes your lawyer fucks up, sometimes he does great. Bottom line, don't necessarily go with the priciest lawyer. Go with a great lawyer. Sometimes they'll be the most expensive, sometimes not.
Again, a competent lawyer uses the legal framework to the best he can to obtain the most favorable outcome for his client. Sometimes the best of lawyers can't get you off. Think damage mitigation.
