It's none of their business.

"It's so I can take this money here and put it in that account there."

I'm honest with them, its illegal to lie to a bank teller. /s

I've never had tellers outright ask me this, but I've had a few that were inquisitive - they knew they shouldn't ask for it but they were dancing around it. I honestly think most of the tellers are just trying to keep you from getting scammed. They see someone coming in making a deposit for several hundred dollars, if not thousands, and its obviously unusual to do this for most things, so I think a lot just want to make sure you know the risks and you aren't getting scammed. Another set of tellers, I don't know what their motivation is b/c they act all pissy and bitchy. I had one teller who had a bright smile on her face, welcomed me warmly, until she realized I was making a cash deposit into someone else's bank account. her demeanor instantly changed. She started asking invasive questions - like if I lived or worked in the area, what I did for a living, etc.

Its none of the their business frankly. What I've done w/ LBC sellers is I ask them what I should say if the teller gives me static. Many have good advice. For instance, I was told by one teller that starting today, you can't make deposits into accounts in another state. But she'd do this one for me and that was it. I asked the next time around, and the LBC seller told me to remind the teller that deposits in another state are allowed for BUSINESS checking accounts. Anyway, my advice is to ask the seller b/c they know the bank and they know the rules and can get you throgh the bullshit. If they've been selling a while, their customers have run into the same thing.

I hate this aspect of it. Banks are starting to come down on making deposits to accounts in different names. I believe Chase has stopped allowing this completely. I've found Wells Fargo and Citi have been the ones that've given me the least problems.

Tell them it's rent for your grandma so she doesn't lose her house, or tell them to fuck off. Kind of depends on what you look like.

This is why I prefer meeting people in person for cash exchanges, a lot less sketchy
