use TAILS through a external HD on a Mac laptop? or does it need to be a windows/linux machine exclusively?

Tails can be run from a mac.

Download tails. VERIFY TAILS. Burn ISO to DVD. Boot from DVD. Insert USB. Go to "Applications" > "System Tools" > "Tails Installer." Install Tails to desired USB flash drive.

After installation finishes shut down, boot from your new Tails USB and eject CD.

Tails is designed so that it won't run on a hard drive. Your best bet is to burn it to a DVD and boot from that. If you don't have a DVD drive, you can install Tails to a USB flash drive using this method:
