[OPSEC/Computer] Is there actually any reason for users (just buyers, not vendors) to choose their own username?

It just seems like a way to add a point of failure where there doesn't necessarily need to be one. Vendors need to make a recognizable brand name for themselves, of course, but buyers don't. I know several people in real life who use the darknet markets, and I know for a fact that several of them reuse usernames for the darknet markets that they use on the clearnet as well.

Why not just have a numerical user ID instead of a username? Like how ICQ works. Do usernames actually offer any advantage in this scenario? Market admins already force people to use PGP for their own safety, why not this too?

Usernames are there so you can easily remember them, I see your point here but lots of people wouldn't note them down and forget them which means a lot of support messages because of people being locked out of their BTC filled accounts.

Buyers sometimes also need to be recognizable by vendors so that they know who are returning customers, to do this with numerical ID's would mean storing every single customer's unique ID who have bought from them, which is a terrible idea, since even after order history is purged, they would essentially be keeping a list still.

You don't necessarily need to use a different username on each market too but it essentially removes the link between purchases on multiple markets and if someone phishes your password they can't go through each market and steal every account.

If it were a string of numbers, I'd forget them. My username (or maybe it's names) are in no way linked to my real life ID, or any log in to any clear net website.

I just think if you choose things you remember, but not incriminating things, it's not an issue.

Didn't a market open up recently that doesn't require users to register?

Usernames are easier to remember, easier to search, and much easier to write reviews with.

This is actually an interesting idea.

You could actually make different login credentials. So a user choosen login name but then a different display name.

So you can easy memorize your login, because you chose it by yourown and could even use it on different markets but you have different display names. It could be a random string, but I guess some kind of name generator would be better, because it's easier for vendors then.

It could be problematic assigning the pgp keys but nothing that couldnt be solved. Actually you could include the pgp key id to the display name.

So you would have something like

JohnDoexx (0x0EFAAB)

So if the vendor imports your key, he can easy filter it based on the id.

I have a different id for darknet coz I don't want to give up my anus virginity :P

I know that agora user pages hold vendor reviews of the buyers. That's a plus, other vendors can see if you claim non-delivery or are a general asshat. If the user names did not remain static every order would be a first time order. As a buyer i avoid those with low feedback or no transactions because the odds of them being a scammer is much higher. I could imagine vendors feel the same way about brand new users in some regard, right?

reuse usernames for the darknet markets that they use on the clearnet as well.

Well that's stupid, but building a reputation is almost as important for buyers as it is for vendors. Just pick a new username for your DNM buyer accounts.

My username on DNM's is some shit that is so unrelated to anything. It's not even a word.

I'VE SAID TOO MUCH flies to Bermuda
