It might be a worthwhile experiment to see how this subreddit functions for a week or two with a restriction on throwaway accounts. I figure this will be a somewhat controversial topic, but hear me out before you make up your mind.
In my opinion throwaways cause more problems than they solve. It's a luxury which is too often abused and causes a headache for mods and users alike. Throwaway accounts completely undermine the ban system and promote an endless stream of misinformation and low quality content. Without making people minimally invested in their accounts, we are implicitly encouraging shitposts.
Some of you who were around on the original Silk Road forums may remember that you needed to have a minimum of 50 posts in the newbie section before you could post on any other section of the forums. This served two main purposes. First, it helped prevent spambots from flooding the sub. Luckily we have automod and Reddit's built in spam filter to help with that. Second, it made people invested in their account. You're less likely to break the rules and get banned because it's time consuming to get those 50 posts and something you want to avoid having to do again.
I am envisioning very minimal restrictions on throwaway accounts.
To start, I was thinking we could institute a 3 comment karma minimum to be able to post new topics. Throwaways would still be allowed to comment freely in threads like they can now, but creating new topics would be limited to those that earned a total of 3 upvotes on their comments. This is by no means a perfect system and I'm certainly open to suggestions, but it's a start that will hopefully improve the quality of content on this subreddit.
tl;dr: institute a 3 comment karma minimum to be able to post new topics on /r/DNMs.
