This feels like a loaded question. lol.
Why did they feel an exit scam was imminent? People say all sorts of shit all the time. Who knows, but if anyone had solid info, be nice to hear.

If you doubt it, don't do it.

Best to keep your funds away from your AlphaBay wallet. Save large amounts of Bitcoin on a local wallet and only use AB if there's no other option to transmit BTC at this moment, IMHO.

Yes, realistically, at this moment, it is safe to use. They could possibly exit-scam, but realistically all markets could exit scam at any moment.
There are theories on how the admins are stealing money from users accounts (in which the admins respond by saying they were phished), they have been apart of several scummy events (such as blackmailing in rare cases), and it is ran by carders (but which market isn't nowadays?).
Those are some reasons (along with non-saving preferences and poor CAPTCHA) and several others which I would advise using any other major market available on the market right now. The only disadvantage to switching to another market is that the other markets have less vendors/listings, but I would prefer to lose listings in exchange for safety.
Will they exit scam this week/month? Probably not. Are there better markets that you could use? Yes.

Any market can go down at any time.
However, many people I know have deposited thousands recently and had no issues at all. Use 2FA and keep spare coins off the market.
Are you familiar with the old American sitcom Cheers? One of the show's recurring characters was Cliff the mailman. From his barstool Cliff would regularly pontificate on all manner of topics and offer all sorts of indisputable opinions. Most of his ideas were half-baked and most of his opinions quite disputable -- but that never stopped him from speaking up.
Whenever you see somebody on /r/darknetmarkets offering their sage advice on OpSec, imagine Cliff the mailman. The Grand Wizard has seen talk about preparing your packs in a clean room in a biohazard suit to avoid stray DNA contamination. The people offering this advice have never sold anything on any sizable level. Hell, many of them aren't even old enough to get the bitcoins they would need to buy drugs, never mind sell them. But they've picked up a few bits of misunderstood advice and done their own misguided research and now they are DNM security experts.
The Grand Wizard has been using AlphaBay for over a year and it remains our busiest market. AlphaBay was/is run by carders and it shows in their dispute resolution: they appear to have this idea that any customer dumb enough to get ripped off deserves to lose the money. If you set up 2FA you should be safe from 99.9% of all phishing attacks: if you use common sense when buying you should avoid getting scammed and never have to use their dispute resolution anyway.
