Trustless alternatives to mixing services?

Good day,

I read the following passage:

Prior to the advent of trustless alternatives, mixing services (also called tumblers) were used to mix one's funds with other people's money

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mixing_service

What does that mean? The article doesn't link to any of the mentioned 'trustless alternatives'. What are those exactly? Is mixing outdated? Is there now software to mix everything yourself, for example via creation of many different wallets in combination with something like hidden services?

there are several alternatives to the traditional tumbling which involves one centralized service, more information here https://www.reddit.com/r/DarkNetMarketsNoobs/wiki/bible/buyer/bitcoin/tumbling

Send it through in chunks of a few hundred at a time.

shouldn't take more than a day to transfer the money in chunks as long as you set a timer and check every 30 mins or so whether the last transaction went through and it's ready for more coins.
