Why is it bad to use a VPN on the net?

Wouldn't you want a more anon trail?

What if someone was on mobile, would it be better for a VPN?

And speaking about mobile, I've heard it's alright and it's bad for the net. Thoughts?

Don't use the dnm on mobile, Tails is there for you as an insurance policy which cannot be used on your mobile to my knowledge.

Some people use a vpn and some don't, I vpn-->tor personally to further hide from my isp.

Tor itself is designed to route your ip adress thru various proxies so you dont have to use a vpn, if you use a vpn it will probably 1st log your real adress and spy what you are doing on the net and sell your info.

Before tor/darknet became popular there was a forum popular among carders/fraud called shadow crew.

I was somewhat active on that forum for awhile.. one of the sections of the forums was for Vendors. IIRC there were a few sections "verified/reviewed vendors" "unverified" "new".

Lots of ppl selling "dumps"/"fulls" (stolen credit card information), fake ids/documentation, etc

Then someone started offering a new "VPN" service, most people used proxies back then, but those were a pain for a variety of reasons (pain to use/slow/unreliable/constant need to get "fresh" ones). The vendor made a lot of claims -- like, nothing logged, top of the line encryption, etc.

The post had so many replies w/ good reviews and how trustworthy the vendor was, the mods/co-founder of the site even vouched for them.

it blew my mind, I made a post pointing out the obvious OpSec stuff -- mainly that whoever is running the VPN service can monitor all your traffic (data in non-SSL/TLS/HTTPS traffic, destination IPs, date/time of connections, etc). Even if this vendor was trustworthy, his service could be taken over by LE/compromised somehow

I didn't see any reason to use this service over a number of well-known free/low cost offerings that made big fusses about freedom of speech, not storing data, etc etc. It especially seemed fishy for something like this to be offered on a forum based on fraud -- even if it wasn't LE, not going to put that kind of trust into some asshole on a fraud forum.

If memory serves me right one of the big time posters replied saying "but so so vendor is trustworthy, been using them for months". Ignored other than that.

I believe a year or two later a friend of mine told me ShadowCrew was shut down, their main page replaced by this https://web.archive.org/web/20041117084207/http://shadowcrew.com/

The vendor offering the VPN service was actually the secret service, and for over a year they captured/monitored traffic and used it to bust a shit load of people. I called that one, was trying t

Google for "shadow crew" if you want to find out more.

The next couple of years will be fun to watch.

It gives the impression that you have no trust in the system.
