According to the warrant, filed Dec. 29 in Roanoke Circuit Court, a manager at YRC Freight in northeast Roanoke told police he'd gotten an unusual call regarding a particular package -- a pallet of cardboard boxes, plastic-wrapped together -- which had been shipped from California.
The caller had tried, unsuccessfully, to authorize someone other than the package's designated recipient to pick up the boxes.
Investigators and a Vinton K-9 officer answered the call and a dog trained to search for drugs responded to the package, the warrant said.
The warrant said that although the manager was not asked to do so, he opted to open the packages, which were still in his custody. Inside the boxes he discovered holiday napkins, tablecloths and two large objects wrapped tightly in cellophane, one of which weighed more than 20 pounds.
The search warrant's return said police seized "29.3 lbs. of cocaine," or about 13 kilograms, from the packages. They also took packing materials which "will yield drugs and information as to the sender and intended receiver of the shipment," the warrant said.
Roanoke police spokesman Scott Leamon said Tuesday no arrests had been made in Virginia or California, but he declined to comment further on the case.
