Tails 1.8 is out folks!

Changes

New features
Icedove a rebranded version of Mozilla Thunderbird is now the official email client in Tails, replacing Claws Mail.

Claws Mail will be removed from Tails in version 2.0 (2016-01-26). If you have been using Claws Mail and activated its persistence feature, follow our instructions to migrate your data to Icedove.

Upgrades and changes
Electrum from 1.9.8 to 2.5.4. Now Electrum should work again in Tails.
Tor Browser to 5.0.5.
Tor to 0.2.7.6.
I2P to 0.9.23.
Icedove from 31.8 to 38.4.
Enigmail from 1.7.2 to 1.8.2.

Known issues

Incremental upgrades are much slower to apply than before. You can expect it to take around an hour after the upgrade has been downloaded. See 10757 for details.

If your system clock is incorrect, then bridge mode will not work. One way to work around this is to correct the system before connecting to the network, which will require setting an administration password.

Anyone else having troubles upgrading? I keep getting an error message that tells me that my drive isn't large enough. But I'm running TAILS off a 16gb USB stick without a persistent volume, so I can't understand why it would keep telling me there's not enough space.

Is there an easy way to manually install outside of cloning or the other way I don't understand? It seems like it would be easier to just download 1.8 on another thumbdrive vs. going through all this manual bs.

/u/nightsymphony is there a reason why electrum is no longer going through socks proxy of tor?!?!?!?!

edit: nobody freak out, change to socks proxy localhost in electrum settings to load up your wallet!

Remember that if you have any issues with upgrading, you can use your original tails disk to install from ISO on another usb, then use the other usb to upgrade from clone to your original usb without interrupting persistent file!

can be done on a mac. use disk utility to write image to USB. install reFit boot loader. will not work with 10.11 El Capitain, though.

Alright, so I figured out how to upgrade.

First off, I did have a USB running TAILS with persistence (let's call that USB1). That was the one that originally wouldn't upgrade. So I had cloned it to a new 16gb drive (let's call that USB2), but that was having the same issue with saying it was out of space.

What I did was then download the TAILS iso to the USB1 persistence drive. I then went into TAILS Installer and clicked on the Upgrade from .iso option. I was then able to upgrade the USB2 drive to 1.8 using the iso that I had just downloaded. And it works! I'm now running TAILS 1.8 from USB2. So in case anyone is having the same problems, these steps should work.

Now, here's my last question. I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to import my personal PGP key into USB2. On TAILS on USB1, I click on export in the Manage Keys application and it exports a file that we'll call personalkey.pgp. But that isn't an importable file when I try and import it to the Manage Keys application in USB2. Any help here? That's my last missing link.
