Posted this in Noobs also but this sub gets more action, hope I'm not tarred, feathered, and publicly shamed for this:
The sticks are exactly the same size, make, and model. Does anyone know of a workaround for this or a better tool that I can try (on any OS)? I tried searching here but only saw one post that suggested using a different method.
Computer recognizes the 2nd stick as 14. something GBs and the image from the identical USB is 15. something. But again they are exactly the same USB sticks.
Just want to have a backup copy in case the first one stops working. Any help is appreciated.
Make sure the 2nd usb is empty. I did not use the usb image tool but I will write my method that has worked for me many times.
Note this is not the fastest or best way but is effective.
Using linux/mac os x terminal Type:
Then plug in the usb you are copying and type:
Take note of the new item that appears and its location which will probably be something like /dev/sdb
Then plug in the usb you are copying to and type:
Note the new item which will probably be something like /dev/sdc
You may need to unmount the disks which can be done with
Or with
Now with this part you need to be careful because you can potentially crash your computer
Where sdx is the location of the drive you are copying and sdy is the location of the drive you are copying to. This will take a long time and no messages will be displayed during the copying.
When it is finally done (1-4 hours depending on usb size and write speed) double check the new usb boots into tails successfully.
