How risky is it to order from overseas?

Out of paranoia I've only been ordering within my country. However, there are much better prices and selections on overseas products. I'm worried about customs intercepting something and then never being able to use my address again. Is this a valid concern?

It really depends on what you're buying and where you live.

Living somewhere like Indonesia? Pretty risky if you get caught, but less likely to get caught with any vendor who knows what they're doing.

Living in AU or NZ? Expect to have a tough time getting things through customs. Anything with a distinct odour is going to be even harder - marijuana, heroin, coke etc. If you are a landlocked country you may have an easier time of it, as border customs are a little more relaxed.

Honestly, risk is relative. You ought to know your country's customs better than most, as well as you ought to know the social cost of getting caught. Getting caught is universally higher from international services than domestic because it adds another link in the chain where law enforcement may become aware of your package, disregarding customs is specifically designed to filter the bad stuff out.
