An Anecdotal Mail Carrier Experience

Ever see those posts where someone says "your mail carrier doesn't know who lives there, they just drop it off to the posted address". Well today, I had an experience proving that's not true.

I moved into a new apartment building the other week. It has a fancy PO box like mail center on the street. All residents ( ~35) have a key for their private mailbox (very large), and there are secure package boxes for anything that's too large your mailbox.

I've only gotten mail here once. Not unusual as I haven't updated my address yet. But today I was expecting some amazon packages. I got the update that my packages were delivered and I went to get them a few hours later. Sadly, no notice, no nothing was there. I called the local PO and they contacted the route carrier. The route carrier held my packages because she saw the former tenant opening my mailbox.

I have no idea how the mail carrier knew that he wasn't living here - maybe just that she had seen a new name showing up on mail? I don't know. But in any case, she almost certainly saved me from having stolen packages.

Moral of the story: if you don't think you're mail carrier knows who's at an address, then you might want to rethink that.

and btw, I live in a small city, but mail routes have plenty of apartment complexes in the downtown routes. There are no rural routes here.

What's up with that guy still having the key to your box? Have you reported it to anyone?

Why would you ever order with a fake name or a name that doesnt match the address?

tl;dr Depends on which country you live in.

You don't state which country but it sounds very much like the USA/Trumpville. I'm happy to report that this could not happen in Australia. Yet. I have no idea what happens in Europe or Africa, but posties here do not give a toss who lives where. Our beloved postal service has no equivalent of those USPIS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Postal_Inspection_Service mofos or laws making use of the mail for illicit substances a heavy duty federal crime like you poor 'merkins. Sounds like a real circus over there.
