What if Ross Ulbricht had closed his laptop that fateful day?

What do you folks think? He had his back to the wide open so he couldn't even see it coming. But what if on that fateful day he got the drop on the Feddies and closed his laptop in the nick of time? Would the outcome had been much different? Or suppose he stayed at home in his room, door locked, desk positioned so he could see out the windows.. BC remember the original plan was to straight up raid his ass. I imagine he'd see or hear enough shit hitting fans that he'd have slammed his laptop closed. Then what? Would he have been a free man today? Or would dem Boyz just found a nother route to construct their evidence and maybe even plant some if desperate enough? It ain't like they didn't have any outside help hides from nsa under blanket

What if i didn't eat those 6 taco supreme's for lunch? Bet i wouldn't be typing this on the toilet right now that's for sure.

Just for your interest: If you work with TAILS, then you only have to pull the USB stick out and it will automatically invoke an emergency shutdown and then restart a fresh kernel to overwrite RAM. That's why I have connected my USB stick with a chain to my belt. Someone just taking my laptop away from me is in for a big black surprise on the screen. ;-)

They found so so so much evidence open on his computer. logs and logs and images and files... He was a dumbass to have even kept half that shit which was obviously unnecessary. Can't believe the guy who started it fell like that.

Had he closed it, the encryption would have worked and I doubt they would have been able to get anything from it. They still would have gotten him farther down the road, though, I bet.

U assume he didnt have some lame ass password cause now we know he sucked at security though it goes to show they didnt find his cp collection

[4 Points] forgettheket:

They would have tried really fucking hard to extort the pass out of him.

[4 Points] thanheck:

It's a bit of silly question isn't it? They attacked him that way because they'd determined from their surveillance that he was vulnerable to it. They were in no rush.

what if

[3 Points] noonehear:

I still don't understand how he was unable to slam his laptop closed... I mean it takes seconds. Did they tiptoe up on him and immobilize him or something?

[3 Points] sharpshooter789:

Depends. If the feds got there quick enough they might be able to perform a cold boot attack and extract the decryption key from ram.

[3 Points] kuntarkinti:

They would have tortured him with a blowtorch to his balls or an electric power drill to bis knees to reveal the password or done the stuff they do with the Arabs in Gitmo. Cracking password Brute force? Lol too much works. Good old torture works much faster.

[2 Points] ahdoublexl:

I think using a laptop with no battery, tails, encryption with a strap connected to the power cord and your leg would be perfect. Even if you got moved in on all you would have to do is kick your leg out and the computer is off.

[2 Points] cleffyowns:

I truly wonder what was going through Ross' mind the second he realized he was getting busted. I can't imagine how fucked he felt

[1 Points] ozgrowthrowaway:

Closing the laptop which is effectively just locking the logged in session is not enough. If the attacker can keep the laptop powered they can almost certainly extract the key from RAM. Pulling the battery or powering off the machine is the safest - then they either have to crack the encryption or buy the $5 wrench.

That's a really good question, actually. I would imagine th fed's could crack his encryption.
