They are cheap, and if your computer goes wrong you can just put your current hard drive back in.
Plus, if you are just being paranoid (which is statistically likely, you haven't destroyed everything on your hard disk.

DBAN as far as software goes. But it takes a long time to run - not exactly something you can initiate after you hear the knock.
DBAN it... then physically destroy it as well. Then sink it in a lake or river.
