PGP Help: 4096-4096

I am currently operating with a vendor outside of any actual market, and we've come to a bit of an issue with PGP.

The vendor has asked me to create a new PGP key that is RSA-RSA 4096-4096. I am using Kleopatra, and try as I might, I have yet to be able to do anything or find anything online which talks about a 4096-4096 key. My key options only list the possibility of creating a 4096 RSA key, but the vendor specifically said there is something separate called a 4096-4096 RSA key, and insists there should be an extra option.

Do any of you have any experience with this? Does anyone know how to create a 4096-4096 key, or where there might be a guide to doing so? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

A standard key usually has two keys by default. If you created a 4096 bit key in Kleopatra, it would probably have two 4096 bit keys.

Here's the command line sequence for gpg:

gpg --gen-key

Please select what kind of key you want:
   (1) RSA and RSA (default)
   (2) DSA and Elgamal
   (3) DSA (sign only)
   (4) RSA (sign only)
Your selection? 1

RSA keys may be between 1024 and 4096 bits long.
What keysize do you want? (2048) 4096
Requested keysize is 4096 bits

Here's the key it generated:

gpg --edit-key testtest

pub 4096R/0x50E8DB26CDE850DE created: 2014-04-03 expires: never usage: SC
                               trust: ultimate validity: ultimate
sub 4096R/0xC80AE3B0F8748932 created: 2014-04-03 expires: never usage: E

So that is probably what he is talking about.

Generate a scratch key with Kleopatra and PM it to me and I'll import it to make sure it looks right.

  1. Why are you still using Windows? If you have made it to dealing outside the markets, it's time to upgrade to something more secure. Whonix, LibertéOS and TAILS are great, QubesOS if you feel ballsy and have the hardware.
  2. Never heard of 4096-4096 key. Check key creation settings? If not, just create a key at that level, and try it with that vendor...

Good luck!
