I read an online newspaper article of 2 local brothers who were arrested. According to the article (these are the critical details it gives); 1) A postal inspector noticed a "suspicious package", 2) alerted police who brought in a K9 which hit on the odor of the package, 3) they obtained a warrant to open the package and found it contained about an ounce of meth and a gram of heroin, 4) they got a warrant to search their house (the package was addressed to their name, and their home address). 5) At their home they found meth/heroin paraphernalia and some weed, 6) arrested them for possession and ingestion of all of the above.
The article pictured the drugs. They were in clear, slim, vacuum sealed bags. Now I don't know any of the backstory as to where exactly these drugs were mailed from, but I could only assume they came from a darknet vendor. Of all my reading on these subreddits and everywhere else, I've never heard of anything like this happening, or of this even being a potential outcome. I've read of controlled deliveries, but these guys essentially got busted before they even knew it or touched the package.
Perhaps considering this a personal concern is overly paranoid because I do not know a single detail about what went on behind the scenes of their package, and I will OF COURSE be using utmost caution and proper op-sec, but here's where my concern comes from: does this signal that there is a particularly snoopy postal inspector on duty locally? Perhaps a heavy focus on "suspicious mail" coming in? Some illegal snooping going on at the post office? This just seems like an overly suspicious bust (on postal/LE's behalf) in comparison to what I have read on DNM orders. I live in a low-medium population area, low crime, with one central post office, if that means anything at all.
The article particularly hit home because I recognized the names of these guys. I don't know them personally, but they are acquaintances with some of my acquaintances. I dont know them, but know of them, you know? I'm not going to dig around for more info, but the one time it got brought up in conversation, no one knew anything. Everyone says: "Ordering drugs to your house? How stupid..."
What do you all think about this? Any ideas about what the hell might have caused this to happen? It just seems crazy how easily they were busted over something so casual.
i dont think it was a paranoid postal inspector. it was probably just really bad outer stealth that made the package look suspicious. (hand written, no/fake return address, lots of tape around the box, or more)
but it is odd that they searched the house before they did a CD
