Tor with VPN

I want to use a VPN to help stay anonymous to my ISP. I understand that the VPN will not protect me from exit nodes but I want to use a public wifi hotspot to access the dark web. I'm sure I will need a VPN if this is the case, right?

Anyone know any good VPNs that work alongside tor, are they free, how good are they?

Thanks - Batel018

Using a VPN IS a good idea. People who say "why do you need a VPN" are ignorant. There have been many deanonymization attacks on Tor over the years.
Simply by connecting to a VPN, and then starting tor, any attempts to de-anonymize you would result in your VPN IP being seen. If your VPN doesn't store logs... guess what? That's the end of the road for an attacker.

You do not necessarily need a VPN to hide TOR from you ISP. You can use a Tor bridge instead, but this is not as anonymous as using a VPN.

If you do want to use a VPN, you're best bet is to use a private VPN. Public vpns are not a good option. They usually keeps logs, and have been known to turn information over to law inforcement. My recommendation for a vpn is Private Internet Access. This is a really good VPN company.

You can either use a VPN on your normal operating system, or use it with a virtual machine. This is mentioned a few time in the Jolly Roger's Security Guide.

The other comments have mentioned some good stuff. But one thing you specifically said,

I want to use a public wifi hotspot to access the dark web. I'm sure I will need a VPN if this is the case, right?

No. Especially if your MAC address is spoofed, as it is by default on Tails, there's really no reason to use a VPN on public wifi. You're already anonymous as just one of many random public connections. The only reason to use a VPN here is if that public wifi happens to block TOR traffic. In which case, yes, you'd want a VPN. Not for added security, but just to be able to access TOR in the first place.
