How Anonymous is Reddit?

Was wondering if the government could check the IP I use for my darknet reddit account, use it to find my regular account and then use that info to find my identity. Is this possible? Does anyone use a proxy when posting on reddit? I've noticed I can't login to my account when using TOR.

when using tor, use https://pay.reddit.com (notice the https instead of http).

If you're using /u/dontthrowmebro1 over an unencrypted connection, chances are, "they" can see what you're doing.

I suggest using a vpn and tor. That way your isp only sees you using a vpn. If you use just tor, your isp can see that you're using tor, but don't know what you're doing on it.

Logging in via tor through SSL is a start. Making sure your email, username, and password don't resemble any you've ever used or anything personally identifiable. Use linguistic analysis to see how identifiable you are just based on how you write.

Make sure JavaScript is disabled in the Tor browser, and keep it up to date!

VPN's increase your attack surface. I wouldn't worry too much about your ISP seeing you use tor, but you can modify its traffic so it looks like Skype traffic (there are also other obfuscation techniques, this program is called Skypemorph iirc)

Keep accounts compartmentalized, no cross contamination. Also keep in mind who your adversary is, for exame you likely couldn't stop an organization like the NSA from uncovering your identity and there are more relevant threats you should focus on.

It's as anonymous as you make it.

Use a new identity, not your primary reddit user account.

If you're really nervous about the IP thing (I'm really not sure), use a VPN.

If you have any doubt at all in your mind, then yes, delete the account and start over. If you are making purchases or conducting questionable activity which peaks your interest to be anonymous, then what LE needs to get is is intersecting points of data. An IP address is only one tool. They will also take apart nicknames, speech and key words until they narrow the field so small that they can pick you out.

Consider this also, REDDIT is run on a public server. It is not hidden. Therefore, if there is data worth hunting you on that computer, then the authorities can take the computer and never even give it away that they are the new operators. Or they can just take the Darknet account over.

Every single post that you leave, every comment, is forever recorded and maintained to indexing on an intelligence computer. If they want you, they have you. Best we or you can do is to limit the "intersecting data points" to make the field too wide for them to pick us out.

A good example it the SR clown and the story of how they caught him. He provided enough data over Social nets, mail and verbal announcements that narrowed LE's search for him.
