Putting together a history of Carding

Being pretty much done with the Darknet markets I decided to write a history of Carding on Wikipedia.

One evening's work means I captured the basics of the well know events, but I'm missing information specifically on:

I'm probably missing a lot of detail on site structure like:

Any input appreciated!

You know, those who say that carding only hurt the banks can suck my dick. Fuck them. That's just a rationalization for being a fucking scumbag.

I just got my debit card number stolen and it was used. Fortunately, my bank sent me a text message after three phony transactions. At that point my card was shut off. I was 700 miles away from home. So I'm in another state with no access to my money. It may not have cost me anything, the bank refunded it, but it was an incredible inconvenience for me.

So carders can go fuck their fat, neckbeard selves and stink up their mom's basement.

There's already a book about this

While I don't necessarily approve of that community, it is interesting to see how they've evolved over time. Great work! I love your username by the way :P

oh man, shadowcrew... that's a name I haven't heard in awhile. E-gold... haha. Knightrider and his Arizona IDs... geez, this is just flashback after flashback.

Thanks for doing this!

Maybe add something about DarkMarket.ws? I recall it being a big story at the time.

I think there's a bit of a disconnect between the title "Carding (fraud)", and the article, which seems to only cover large-scale skimming/sales/forums. I could be wrong, but I thought it's still called "carding" even when it takes place on a smaller scale (individual or small group, not part of a large forum). There's a lot of this activity, though it doesn't get as much press as when a big market gets shut down.

OP have you read Kingpin: How One Hacker Took Over the Billion-Dollar Cybercrime Underground?

If you can get together a compilation of such history, it would be incredible. Unfortunately, many of these guys don't speak English and there have been so many carding sites rising and falling over the years that it can be difficult to get together a full history of any sort.

There is a post made by the_avid that explains the history of Evolution though. That background also includes tons of history about other, much older sites as well. That'd be a good place to start.

ICQ == carders to no end, likely thanks to the Russian Business Network some might say. As to "closeness of relationships with hacker groups" that depends -- some blackhats will horde them and use them nefariously....some blackhats will spend every day selling fresh DB dumps. A sickening amount come from skimmers on top ATM's or at bars or coffee shops etc, but database attacks targeting CC#'s have been going on for at least 3 decades. There is no money worth the risk (to anyone with a brain) in using stolen credit cards. The only real value is in resale to stupid(er) people. Unless you're in Russia you're almost always going to get caught.

I remember learning from files by cDc, Video Vindicator and Phalcon-Skism, although it wasn't carding I was into personally.

If it is of any help:

If you really want some in depth real info from people who know and have nothing else to do but talk to you, do this:

  1. Take any one of those big press releases the feds put out when the took down one of the carder boards - the ones where they say the full name of the people, their age, and their city and when they were arrested.

  2. Copy the name and age, paste that info into bop.gov's inmate locator. It will tell you which prison they are in, their inmate #, and their expected release date. Then you can look up (at bop.gov) the mail rules for the prison they are in. Mail rules are usually very similar from facility to facility.

  3. Write them letters explaining why you want to know, and ask them any questions you want. Rent a PO Box for the return address.

Most of them will probably write you back. They're not dead, and they are probably bored out of their minds.
