putting an animal to sleep

I just got back from the vet's where my cousin's 14 year old cat Vanya was put to sleep after being diagnosed w/ kidney failure earlier this month. The $1200 bill was bad, but the worst part was herding a scared, sick animal into a carrier and seeing how the last hours of his life were spent in unfamiliar and unpleasant surroundings.

My own cat is fit as a fiddle, but if he ever gets sick enough to need euthanasia, I don't want to put him through all that if I can possible avoid it. So has anybody here ever used a DM opiate to humanely put down a pet or is that just fucked up?

Like someone else said, some vets will do a house call.

Check with your regular vet. Ours does it for no extra cost. They are a great vet, though. They only charged us a normal check-up cost for the house call and euthanasia ($60). Of course we have taken all of our animals them for the last 20 years, so they may give us special treatment.

Ugh I hate having to put animals to sleep, even if it beats the alternative. I've had to put down my cat and my pug in the last year (Cat/June 2013, Pug/March 18th, 2014).

I still can't look at pictures of my pug, Rosie, without crying. I miss her :/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentobarbital

This is regomended for Volentry human euthanasia and also Pets as for dose .Best to ask this question in a veterinary forum.

If you're lucky enough to live in rural australia or in any farming town.

A rifle Is the kindest way for your pet but a very.

Hard thing to do to a loved family pet.

we had the vet come and put my cat down at my house. We sat there in the backyard so she could be in as familiar of a setting as possible... The other cats even sat nearby, they all knew what was going on. But after she passed, we put her body on the ground and each cat went up and sniffed her like they were payinng their respects. It was pretty intense.

I'd say that that's the route you should go.

First, you're going to panic your beloved animal when you go to shave it. Then you're likely going to hurt it a bit when you're trying to hit a vein... poke, poke, poke... you know how small cats veins are? Or even where they are? I'm all for humanely putting your animal downi in a comfortable environment, but do involve a vet who knows how to administer the meds, know proper dosing, etc... You might think "who cares about dose, i'm just trying to put fluffy down", but dogs, for example have much higher tolerances to opiates than humans, i've read. And it'd be horrible if you administer an amount that wasnt' enough to kill it quickly, or even worse, you give it enough that it doesn't die at all.

Vets everywhere to housecalls... when that time is approaching, involve your vet, and pay the extra money for them to come to oyu and do the job right.

Someone mentioned heroin. You don't want that, you want to look for barbiturates, giving your pet a heroin OD won't be nice to watch. Barbiturates are highly ranked by the Peaceful Pill handbook, and are used in suicide clinics, as well as by vets. No pain, no frothing at the mouth, just gently falling asleep followed by a quick and painless death. Learn the amounts for fatality, and overshoot. IV is best, but mixing it with food will work as well (although will obviously require a much higher dosage). I believe the suicide clinics generally opt for them mixed with a glass of orange juice or similar. And remember, the LD50/kg isn't the same for animals as in humans.

I would say get some midazolam ampules. And just iv the whole bottle.

It isn't easy to perform an IV injection on an animal, have a professional do it.

I agree though, it's horrible the way our babies leave this world and they deserve better. If possible, have a house call performed.

I really wish we did that for my dog. He was so happy that we were there with him, until the last moments when he finally realized what was happening. Still gets me fucked up thinking about how we let him down.

Vets make home calls, but I would assume some sort of barbiturate would be suitable.

Take it to the vet, i dont care if youve got to put your ass on the street to raise the cash. VET.

Honestly man the best way to do it is just shoot it. I know it sounds like im naking a fucked up joke but its instant painless, and its someone who loves him doing it. Your taking away his pain as a last favor if you want to romanticize it.

just let it die naturally you bastard fuck.
