Encrypted messaging for mobile

So more specifically iPhone, i was wondering if anyone knows about how safe it is to use encryption(pgp) on iPhone or Androids. Which one is better or if the efforts are in vain, I read that its unsafe on iPhone because it already has backdoors installed , Or should i just keep it on a computer.

txtsecure is an easy and free solution although im not sure how effective it is. Its 64-bit symmetrical encryption, so that kinda sucks. Other person has to have txtsecure and the same password.

It'd certainly be good for local PD. If you're going up against feds it might not be enough.

The thing I hate is that with all these programs, or the free ones at least, you have to have a desktop computer in order to import keys. Or else you have to rely on the search function. Which is hit or miss.
