Help with Tails Update

DNMnoobs couldnt help me, so im trying here:

I need to update my TAILS which have persistence. Here is what I have tried: Use TAILS updater within TAILS: It didnt start, I waited ages, but it didnt. Importent: I have some information, like keys and other shit that I dont want to lose. Can you guide me carefully on how to update? I think I have to use 2 USBs. Install the newest in one USB, than clone to the other one, not too sure though. Also can I install it in any way, so next time I can use TAILS updater for more effeciancy? Thanks.

When I started Tails from my USB the last time, a window popped up after booting that asked me if I want to update to 1.2 now or later.
I clicked on update now, it took around 15 minutes, restart, and now I have the latest version. Pretty easy. I also had (and still have) a persistence volume on my USB. Its content didn't get over written, yet I would make a backup before.

If you're on a version less than 1.1, then you need this: https://tails.boum.org/news/version_1.1/index.en.html

Upgrade to 1.1, then auto updates will work after that. Read all of the page, particularly the part where it says "Users of persistence must log in at least once with persistence enabled read-write after upgrading to 1.1 to see their settings updated.

Upgrading from ISO, from Tails 1.1~rc1, Tails 1.0.1 or earlier, is a bit more complicated than usual. Either follow the instructions to upgrade from ISO. Or, burn a DVD, start Tails from it, and use "Clone and Upgrade"."

persistence is always a bad idea with tails. just flash the usb with an updated image, then use an separate encrypted usb to store your keys, files, etc on.
