Didn't the FBI have access to the contents of the phone initially, and then someone made a mistake a locked it? I have also read somewhere that Apple are awaiting a new patent for some encryption tool they have created which would mean even if they could build a back door key , this new software tool would stop the backdoor key from working. I will try and find the source - it was a couple of weeks ago I read it
Of course they can unlock that iPhone. It's a 5C with no "Secure Enclave" and a 4-digit PIN code.
If it was an iPhone 6S with a 6-digit PIN or custom passphrase, though, they'd be completely unable to do shit.
