Hello all, I just wanted to introduce myself. I have been a long-time crawler on this page and a big fan of what the user Gwern contributed to our community. It has been a little since we have heard from him, but a lot has happened in the world of DNM arrests. I figured since we haven't heard from the man in a little bit I would try to pass along some of that info he would typically share.
Matthew Lee Yansen So I took a deeper look into this one, pulled some files from the courts and it sounds like he had it coming. The DEA and NC police were originally tipped off about Yansen (07/19/2017) from a DEA SOI (Source of Information aka Snitch) telling officers that she/he assisted Yansen move multiple pill presses into a storage facility.
From that point forward here is the timeline with relevant info leading to his arrest.
Package Seizure (09/09/2017) Yansen created a company registered to his own name and home address called 'Y Vending' which served as his main way of sourcing drugs/materials. After the DEA was notified about the tip they put a cover on his mail. When a suspect parcel was found in the mail-stream addressed to Y-Vending they were able to isolate and test. The parcel came back positive for drugs and after a warrant allowed for the parcel to be open 3 lbs of cannabis were found. NOTE: This is almost two months after the original tip was received and the cover set-up.
Home Raid (09/12/2017) Now that drugs were found in the mail investigators were able to obtain another warrant for Yansen's house. The police showed up in the afternoon to a gold mine of evidence.
Your affiant and agents of the Raleigh Resident office located approximately 12 pounds of high grade marijuana, approximately 2 pounds of shatter, a THC based wax used for smoking, and several bottles of prescription medication not prescribed to Yensan. Additionally Agents discovered a large amount of United States Currency stored in a locked safe. Agents discovered various hand guns and one rifle on the premises. A glock .40 caliber pistol was found in Yensan's Chevy Colorado, and a Glock pistol was found in the basement next to the garage door. In this basement marijuana was found. Additionally, a Smith and Wesson revolver was found in a kitchen cabinet, a Colt revolver was found on top of a safe which contained approximately $300,000 in the master bedroom closet, and a MPS .22 caliber firearm was found under Yensan's bed.
In Custody (09/12/2017) At this point in time investigators have more than enough to take Yansen with them into custody. In an interview with police they question him about the storage unit that was in the original tip. He denies being associated with the unit. Investigators then take the suspect's photo to the storage unit, question the manager and get a positive ID on Yansen being the renter.
Now that they have him positively ID'd as being the storage unit owner they pull the rental app and reveal that a Michael Knight rented the unit. Investigators circle back around to Yansen's house and can locate the SC fake ID with Michael Knight's info hidden in his bedroom.
Storage Unit (09/12/2017) Now that investigators have the unit pinned on Yansen they commence a search where another treasure trove is revealed.
Your affiant and agents of the Raleigh Resident office located approximately 400 pounds of Xanax precursors and Benzodiazepine, approximately 5000 pills of pressed Xanax, approximately 100 US Postal packaged boxes containing various amounts of Xanax pills, three (3) electronic industrial size pill presses, two (2) electronic industrial drug mixers and a medium sized box with hundreds of preprinted USP delivery labels. Conclusion In the eye's of law enforcement Yansen makes some pretty grave errors that will extend his sentence to almost 15x what he could have received had he been more careful. A DNM vendor works online with anonymous customers which eliminates the risk of local robbery (assuming the vendor is not also dealing local). His small armory which is virtually useless to his dealings has the potential to add 2-5x to each sentence alone (LE refers to these as Enhancements). In addition, every parcel that he had prepackaged with Xanax (it sounds like he had boxes ready for when customers placed orders of say 100, 250, 500 pills) is an additional charge of mail fraud, regardless of whether the order was filled online. Although it may have speed his shipping times up by having the boxes prepacked he shot himself in the foot and dick simultaneously.
Thanks for taking the time to read my update, I pulled all this information directly from court documents. I would love your feedback below if this is something the community would like me to continue!
how does that even help
