[GeneralQuestions] Can someone shed some light on how exactly PO boxes work?

I don't live in the US, and I'm not sure if it's the same thing here. Basically I have to personally sign a "contract" with my post office to get a box inside of their building.

How does this protect me at all if I used my full name etc? Is it different in the US or am I missing something?

EDIT: Thanks everyone, I now realize my mistake.

Key goes in, drugs come out. Can't explain that.

The only reason I ever had considered a P.O. Box was due to others being in the same house as myself.

Basically if some shit went down I wouldn't want them to suffer for it.

Other than that it's pretty much the same. If you know the previous P.O. Box's owner... You could always put the package in their name. My friend had a P.O. Box and he constantly got junk mail for the previous owner of it. Of course this has other risks associated such as, but not limited to: a package being too big thus requiring a signature (which you wouldn't be able to provide since it's not in your name), opening mail meant for someone else, and other DNM related things.

Another reason could be potential avoidance of them finding other things to charge you with. If you get caught at a P.O. Box it's very possible you or someone you know would have time to clean house in the event of a search warrant.

Tl;dr: i would only do it if others I knew had drugs in the house and I didn't want them to suffer because I got caught.

You aren't any more protected than using your home in my estimation, they either know or they don't.

People get PO boxes for other reasons, like not wanting to receive at parents house, not having roomates approval of receiving at home, not dealing with a mailroom in school, hiding purchases from your spouse, not wanting your crack head roomate stealing your package to sell, and the like.

I wondered the same thing a week ago, and without trying to take the "RTFM" stance, I found the answer to this in the comprehensive FAQ link in the sidebar - about the only time ever in my life that what I was looking for had a helpfully named link.

I have a PO box myself since I've done night shift work a few times and it's way better than having the postman knocking on the door when I'm trying to sleep, but it won't help at all when it comes to keeping PC Plod out of your mail
