Could Viceland be partially blameable for for the sudden peak of new users with bad OPSEC?

I'm sure most people already are aware of this but all you have to do is watch one segment on on the new TV Channel Viceland to see 2-3 adds for a show called "Black Market". As an effort to advertise the show it shows as to what I presume to be an suburban white kid opening a USPS package quoting; "United States Postal Service is the best drug dealer I've ever had." This has been around for a while but now they are massively televising it to anyone with cable. There are 2 different segments that Viceland almost shows daily on the DNM's. Both segment's stated that you need tor to access these sites but mentioned nothing else. They also both mentioned to say how the DNM is the "Amazon Prime" of drugs. This being a channel mostly viewed by younger adults and teen's it'd only make sense that a couple of Johhny's or Jim's are gonna wanna try the Amazon Prime of drugs without doing there research.

I'd say at least 90% to blame, the other 10% is those dumbasses telling their friends.

Nah bro.

Potatoes gonna potate.

=)

[9 Points] drkntmrkets:

It has been broadcasted on TV as well before in many different countries, it isn't just Vice that is bringing 'attention' to it. And the DNM's are certainly no secret.

Personally I don't think it matters whatsoever, let the low-hanging fruit hang low, haha.

[6 Points] None:

I wish there was an Amazon Prime for drugs. The existing DNMs are more like a "shitty eBay clone for drugs"

[5 Points] None:

They don't realize that by advertising their war on drugs they're just making it harder for themselves, people see that and theyre like hell yeah we wanna buy drugs online too!

[2 Points] agmature:

I have watched both programs, once. I have seen the whole lineup. The station does not have a lot of shows being so young. I felt the folk sellin the dope on the shows was noobie anyway.

[2 Points] drugfreekid:

No, this is just a drop of water compared to all the published media available on the darknet. The darknet is no longer a secret. Hell, even my parents who are approaching 60 know about the darknet. Just google how to buy drugs and youll stumble upon a picture tutorial for how to use alphabay.

[2 Points] Tobango:

Clever kids would do more research before using DNM, stupid kids can get in trouble without DNM.

[2 Points] DctrJewish:

I learned about the DNM's by reading about the SR1 bust in Barron's. After 11 days of research I bought my first bag of weed. So, yes, any mainstream news outlet, including Vice, has indirectly recruited DNM users.

[1 Points] trynakick:

What tells you that there are, "all these new users with horrible OPSEC", a few Reddit posts? I could use the search bar to try to figure out if these posts are increasing in frequency. Although that would be tough.

An interesting project would be find known market storage wallets and see how they grow over time (normalizing for btc price) then look at any times when all DNM traffic spike.

I first heard about the markets with the Ulbricht bust. Didn't use them until almost a year later. That was probably the biggest media story in DNM history (or his trial or sentencing, then maybe Evo exit)

The idea that a tiny cable show would lead to a spike in DNM use anything more than negligible is risible.

Think about the scale of the DNMs

[1 Points] stilldogman:

Eh. There have been people like that around here for years by the boatload, so I'd say no, that's not the cause. People like to jump in feet-first without actually figuring out what they're doing (I look at them as sleep walkers).

I suppose there has been some pretty decent mainstream coverage in the last couple of years, but none of this is really a secret if you know where to look, or just stumble across certain forums/information. There have been years of documentaries and news stories, so some 25-minute show on Vice certainly didn't spark a bunch of interest.

Coming from a fresh account

[1 Points] DeliChopz:

Maybe I'm missing something but I've watched probably every episode except for the last one on Viceland's show "Black Market" and the show hasn't spoken about DNM's at all. If they did speak on it then the time they spent on it was so insignificant that I must have missed it.

Once again I haven't watched it in a while, the gambling episode was the last episode I watched but the show more focuses on the underworld of anything that generates money, not just drugs. I don't know about any other shows or ads but I am aware that there are plenty of articles written about DNM's that Vice has published but that's nothing new.

[1 Points] anti_body:

before the viceland show, wasn't there a documentary by the bill from bill & ted's excellent adventure?

either way, there's always been asses with terrible opsec on DNMs. that's what made the great 420 scam so entertaining

[1 Points] Vendor_BBMC:

What new users? DNMs have died on their feet because all the jobless druggie early-adopters have tried to stop normal people with common sense from finding out about them.

We've been stuck in this dark room together for too long. Its getting stupid in here. A fresh pair of eyes would see that.

We should be asking why the remaining 98.5% of the world drug trade hasn't joined in, and stopped everything from being so small, depressing and ...shit.

[1 Points] Dark_OZ:

I feel like it was much worse when DNM's first came around and Silkroad first opened. The only way i found out was word of mouth from some tech savvy friends. Hardly any decent guides online regarding strong OPSEC. Loads more people posting plain-text addies and such

[1 Points] baconlayer:

Just wait until the new movie "Dark Web" about Ross is finished...brought to you by the Coen brothers of all people! Exactly what we need.

[1 Points] None:

I only watch that show because the actor who played Omar on "The Wire" is the host and he seems like a cool dude.

That would be a big fat NO....

Guys....The word is out on the markets!!!! And this way of commerce for all items, legal & illegal is OUR future. I used BTC to buy my new Swiss watch off of Overstock.com. from a Coinbase wallet, there is a tab on Overstock to make the purchase. Easiest purchase I have ever made using BTC. All of the major banks are going to blockchain technology for digital transactions.

Yes...The world is full of people who are considered the low hanging fruit of whatever the business is, legal or illegal. People see that they can have illegal drugs mailed to their front door & what do they do, they go a little crazy & make a lot of stupid mistakes.

As the use of the markets grow, we will only see more & more stories in the news of people being arrested & that arrest being tied to a DNM.
