Former Operations Manager for UPS. AMA!

I know UPS isn't the preferred shipping company. But I worked on the inside for about three years, supervised both unloading and loading of trailers and package cars, and the small sort (letters and boxes the size of a coat hanger or smaller) not sure if you guys have any interest but if my knowledge helps anyone I consider it a success.

Three years there and I never had one of my 80 something employees come up to me and say "I think this package has drugs in it." What you need to understand we expect these guys to unload at a rate of 1000 pieces/hour. That's about a box every 3 seconds and that doesn't give much time for them to inspect packages. And it should be noted a lot of these guys don't care as long as the package isn't leaking a hazardous material. Keep in mind the shift starts at around 3 am and if its hot or cold that day forget about it. Our job is to get the packages out asap so our production numbers look better.

Give it a bit, people will ask real questions over the day, not silly ones about sand.

[5 Points] benzoxannythrowaway:

As far as sand goes, 50 pound bags are kinda common. Although they do break open pretty often. You wouldn't believe the amount of damaged and broken parcels we have to fix or re wrap. That country never aroused any type of suspicion. We got a lot of stuff from china that you would think would warrant a second look but did not. As far as shipping time I can tell you that during peak season estimated times are out the window. It's like trying to put 50lbs of shit in a 25lb bag. So be patient and hope your vendor doesn't skimp on quality of packaging

No questions, just wanted to say thanks.

Hypothetically speaking, if you were a vendor, would you use UPS over USPS?

[1 Points] None:

I would be interested just in the fact that the thought here is that ups will just open anything that seems suspicious. How true is that and how often are parcels pulled and why?

How do you feel about packages from the Netherlands??

How do you think your facility compares to others? Do the other facilities have the same pressure, or do you think you may have lived in a particularly dense area?

What kind of education and/or experience is required for this occupation ?

[1 Points] IgottaSTOPmakingTHES:

UPS wants some of the profits.
