I would suggest Signal for iOS devices. It's fully compatible with TextSecure and RedPhone for Android, and it's encrypted end-to-end. They even developed their own protocol for relaying messages; it's worth looking into.

TextSecure (Android) or Signal (ios).
Check out https://whispersystems.org/
Please don't use Telegram.

I would normally NOT suggest anything that wasn't open source, but my friend showed me Wickr, which from my research seems solid, and has been independently audited with 0 serious security holes, and seems to be doing what it claims.
personally I just privnote to my friends (I give them a heads up so they know its not a spam message)

Wickr is great and easy to use, check it out. It also has a desktop client application.

Check out Bleep, it's made by the same guys that made Bittorrent. End to end encryption, verified and anonymous accounts, and a whisper mode with self destructing whispers :)

Wickr or the secret chat portion of telegram works great.

PGP over sms, or kik, or over some generic encrypted chat service. Don't' trust third parties to encrypt your shit, do it yourself.
