What would happen if you got caught buying weed in a state where it's legal?[CommunityDiscussion]

There are 4-5 states now in the US where recreational is legal. What's the legality around getting caught buying bud through the mail? Obviously the state isn't making the tax off it. I'm guessing it's illegal but was curious if anyone's heard of cases like this? How does it get prosecuted or not?

Tax avoidance, probably transporting it over state lines making it a federal crime, supporting a criminal enterprise. No doubt far more.

The mail is ran by the federal government not the states.

So yeah it's illegal.

Same thing as buying and mailing cocaine from Columbia still illegal

It's still illegal to get it through the mail. Weed is still illegal by federal standards and the USPS abides by federal, not state, law. Odds are you would be looking at charges including but not limited to using the mail to transport illegal items, smuggling across state lines, and aiding a criminal enterprise (every time you make a purchase online, the marketplace gets a cut in the form of commission). You might not get charged for the weed itself, though. So there is that...

Keep in mind marijuana is still very illegal at the federal level. They are kind of in a holding pattern in terms of enforcing it at the state level where it's legalized. Using the mail is also illegal as well. So youll still have the same problems I believe should you get caught
