Well yeah anything is possible with the NSA. There was a time when someone would post on here "They cant listen to our phone calls, thats illegal." Now its common knowledge that the NSA does that exact thing. It wouldnt doubt me that one of the mods on here work with LE in some form or fashion.

Seeing as its open source (meaning anyone can read the source code) I feel that would have been found out rather quickly, not to mention it would be very counter intuitive to create a back door anyone can read. So to answer your question, yes it's possible, but it's rather unlikely.

Didn't the United States government create Tor?

possible but im sure the devs would have realized and have thought of this so no thats not the case i dont think

Nice theory, but for me the node theory is more possible! I don't really know what to think we will see!

Even if TOR it's open source, they can add a lot of malicious nodes to save all the information they forward. The last node of a TOR chain can see the clear-text response.

Why would it matter? Your information is safe in our hands.

You wouldn't believe the things they've gained access to. Essentially be wary/cautious of anything funded by the us gov. I2P for example is not.
You can verify the sig though on the downloads. Unless they compromised the private key as well
