Silk Road Documentary

If you have not seen it yet, you should definitely check out the new "silk road" documentary movie.

It talks all about ross' activities, and how he got busted. Turns out they can't get past encryption, so they had to catch him while using his laptop on the website.

He used darknet identities on clearnet websites. Really stupid mistakes. I think there is a lot to learn for new markets to stay away from law enforcement seizures.

This movie gives you the whole story. Quite interesting. I did not realize that he thought he was a political figure changing society.

He valued his website at 10 or 11 figures.

It talks about how he put a hit out on an employee that he thought stole money from him.

I learned a lot from this movie that I did not know about the original silk road and ross ulbrict.

they talked about the ethics in the beginning: "treat others as you would wish to be treated mind your own business"

believed they were ushering in a new era of human freedom.

users believed: "i should be allowed to put whatever substances i choose into my body"

ross saw what he was doing as more important than his "insignificant life" and thus was willing to put himself at risk in order to attempt the movement.

he had thoughts such as: "we're taking about a monumental shift in the power structure of the world, power is being returned to the individual"

the wife of the guy he put the hit out on had to stage his death and take photos of him appearing to be dead.

when chronic pain got his CD it was not by a traditional postage vehicle, so look out for that.

if i understand correctly, furthermore, the FBI actually took chronicpain to a hotel and shoved his head in the tub full of water, to take photos appearing to be torture to meet ross' requests to the LE agent.

jury took just 3 and a half hours to reach their verdict of a life sentence.

the judge told him: "you wanted this to be your legacy and now it is."

they say many markets have replaced it now and have become darker (allowing more types of products and services that aren't exactly kosher), and are doing way more business than the original silk road did.

It talks about how he put a hit out on an employee that he thought stole money from him.

The hitman shit all around was never tried in court despite being arguably a worse crime than what he was tried for and many believe it was a fabrication, just saying.

I spoke to ross when he first started silk road allll the way back when I was talking on the shroomery forums, he even gave out a bunch of btc to everyone (worth a fuck ton of money now). Yes, he really believed he was a pioneer of the internet drug and money movement, and he was/is.

If you dont know all this stuff from just reading /r/darknet* then you are a bit behind the ball game.

Ive read the book and watched 2 docos on SR now, and probably the only worthwhile one was the BBC doco when we got to meet the characters that we had read so much about on all the forums/news sites.

The most interesting thing to learn from the whole thing was how without principles the FEDS would be when conducting an investigation. Aside from the whole murder for hire thing being such a farce they could not even charge him for it in the official inditment.

Aside from two of the investigators getting caught extorting BTC from Ross under different usernames and then faking official stamps to order a legal BTC Trading platform to shut down so he could try and save his ass.

Aside from the Court sealing facts like these and not allowing him to use them in his defense in his trial.

The sentence that he will die in prison is brutal, he ran a trading site that people used for illegal drugs. The whole thing reeks of the Feds being interested in one thing. The money

The other thing that people always say is that he was stupid. Perhaps now with all the experience we have it is easier to make less mistakes, But he had nothing to go on, no previous example to follow. Its easy for us now to say oh he shouldnt have done that, I wouldn't have. But how many of us could be the first to do something and make 0 mistakes?

He paid with his life to allow us to buy and sell drugs online, he did create a new culture that never existed before. And he probably saved a lot of lives that would have been lost to badly dosed drugs, dangerous drugs etc.. etc..

I take my hat off to the guy

The only time I ever lost coins was when SR got seized. Damn BTC were cheap back then.

[1 Points] stonegardener:

Is it really the whole story though? I mean they have to leave out a bunch of details because of the corrupt DEA agents. I don't remember much about this IRS guy they're featuring
