[Help] Receiving an Xpresspost from Canada Post shipped domestically - "Item on hold at postal facility to verify address of recipient"

After a day of the tracking showing it out for delivery, "Item on hold at postal facility to verify address of recipient" showed up on the tracking log.

This package contains illegal goods and I'm wondering if this is suspicious. Has anyone ever heard of this before? What should I do?

You used your valid address and your real name?

It's most likely nothing man, I've had that status plenty and I've always received it. It's just letting you know to not expect delivery today.

I'd call the post office and inquire about the package.. If it sounds suspicious then leave it be. Maybe the mailman was new and couldn't find your house number or something who knows.

Dude that is likely not good. Wait and see if they query you personally for some sort of verification. It could be simply that the address on the label is not in their DB. Or it could be fishing for you. The normal route courier can verify the building exists and even the post box, so it makes no sense. Best thing to do is deny and let it get sent back to the original sender and start over.

Do not panic yet with your computer. If you have the drive encrypted then no bother yet. Especially since you are only reading the tracking data online. If they send a signature request to you, something is wrong. You do not need a signature to verify the existence of an address. They may just put a slip in your mailbox and tell you to come pick it up. Don't do that either. There will be cameras at the minimum waiting for you also with an on site security or police officer. They may not even need that since the cameras will be enough to get you.

If they ask for a signature or try to bait you to do a pickup, then it is time to scrub the computer. The absolute safest of all is to drive a nail through the hard drive so that the disc platters shatter. Smashing with a hammer is good too but the platters MUST shatter. You can also do a hard security wipe of all data by overwriting more than 8 times BUT in the time it will take that to happen, you are vulnerable.

Small fish status means nothing. All it takes is an agent with nothing to do. If the quantity is high enough, then they will still get you, charge you and then hang it over your head in an effort to get you to order more from the vendor so that they can find the vendor. Either way you have been charged.

If you do not accept the package and they have nothing to find on the computer, then you are good. One more thing, if you destroy the hard drive, DO NOT throw the parts away on your property. Drive it all away somewhere and dump it. Them seeing the broken parts nearby will be enough to cause them to search and dig deeper.
