How to do full disk encryption?

I want to run Whonix on my Ubuntu machine, but it requires you to encrypt your host machine to be safe. The standard Ubuntu full disk encryption apparently has a few flaws and is not good enough.

How to solve this problem, please don't tell me to use tails cause I also need vpn.
