The device that I unfortunately encountered before DNMs were around, was a sensor (think pressure plate) that detected when said pack was opened and contents were removed.
Many of them don't need a GPS device bc the marks location is already on the package. The jump-out boys just post up there...wait for the pack to be opened...and the sensor to transmit, so the DEA (now HSI) could jump out and snag your ass at the right time.
And that thing was the size of those anti-theft things that clip onto clothes to prevent you from stealing them.
Times have changed obviously, and GPS devices are in everything now from watches to Fitbits. I just wanted to share that GPS devices aren't always involved in a controlled delivery.
It's really unlikely that they'll use a tracking device or attempt a controlled delivery for an amount of drugs small enough to fit in an envelope. It's not worth their time. You'll most likely get a love letter in the unlikely event that they catch it.
