Tor friendly IRC/Chat programs

I know this is a little lazy, but I'm new to Tor friendly chat programs and would like the opinion of people who already use these services and not LMGTFY.

I've installed Torchat, but I don't like the interface. Does it use a portable version only of Tor or can I configure it to use my custom compiled system Tor?

Jabber seems to be popular. Would someone recommend a client and are some servers safer than others?

I'm using a Debian based system and prefer to compile things myself.

Thanks

Tripsit.me operates an irc with a hidden service. You can use any irc client that supports SOCKS proxy. I am partial to weechat myself.
