Does a Linux Live bootup protect me as Tails would?

I get that Tails is fully encrypted and that kinda thing, but wouldn't just booting Linux from a flash drive suffice? I couldn't get Tails to work on my Mac so I just decided to go for a Linux bootup instead.

I still use a VPN on top of that so i'm assuming I should be good?

No expert. But tails also wipes memory when shut down. Its desinged to leave no trace.

First of all, DO NOT use a VPN. It completely destroys the anonymity that TOR provides.

Second, the reason Tails is recommended isn't only due to the encryption, but the fact that nothing is left behind once you shut it down, as well as it coming prepared with almost everything (if not everything) you need to utilize the darknet. I don't know much about Linux (I've only ever used it a few times in college to write Java code for a class), but I would try your hardest to make Tails work. Try making a post over at /r/darknetmarketsnoobs and see if they can help.
