Title: Linux via USB thumb drive on Macs?
Post by: airforced on November 20, 2011, 09:06 pm
Just wondering if anyone here is running Linux, like TAILS, via USB on a Mac? I have a USB thumbdrive setup to run TAILS  on my PC and it is working great, but I keep running into issues on my Mac doing this method and I can't seem to find any good tutorials. Currently running linux via a virtual machine on my Mac, but I know that's not ideal security wise.

Just wondering if anyone had any resources in this area that they could share. TIA!

Here's my experience, and it's not very good. I was really hoping for TAILS on a MavBook Air, and using rEFIt I was able to select a drive with TAILS or Ubuntu, but not boot.

Using a modified .iso including drivers for my MBA4.2, I was able to boot into Ubuntu 11.10 from a USB drive, which is nice enough. The modified iso was created in Ubuntu on another machine, following the tutorial at (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookAir4-2). Ultimately I wanted to install Ubuntu on an SD card from the live OS, but I failed to boot from SD and didn't try any further.

So basically, booting into live Ubuntu is possible but you might need additional drivers. I'm sure a mac-bootable TAILS can be created in a similar fashion, but I lack the technical knowledge :(

You might have a better user experience if you use Vmware Fusion. You can secure your virtual machine as much as you want AND you don't need to reboot.
