Title: Lost 1269.00BTC on Blockchain
Post by: oaktree6969 on September 20, 2013, 09:59 am
Logged into my wallet on Blockchain, and as soon as I did, saw that a transaction had started and it was cleaning out the wallet. Only left about .80BTC after stealing 1269.00BTC. I contacted Blockchain and was informed I'm fucked.

Any ideas?

Surely the lesson here is to review their security practices? The wallet did not become self-aware and empty itself, someone got access to the wallet via cracking a weak password or malware.

@cosmictourist
but you can never be 100% sure about security... best bet is if you've got that kind of money keep it in a proper account

Paper wallets or cold wallets held offline would be the best bets for that kinda dough. Honestly having 1btc in a BC wallet is unnerving enough I can only imagine..

I was told by support at Blockchain that it was probably maleware. I hadn't logged into the wallet in over 6 months, and when I did, that's when the withdraw began.

Yeah you left this amount of money stopped there for 6 months? :O

6 Months ago BTC was under 60$ so now you really loose what you paid

Actually, I opened the wallet over a year ago, when BTC was under $20.

Nope, not really. I was lucky enough to have 10-12K in BTC when it took off. Now it simply means I'll have to come out of retirement, and get growing in the light direction...

I'm so sorry for your loss. This should be a lesson to everyone reading this thread, do not use online wallets. Use a paper wallet on a live CD/USB!

I'd probably be dead if I had that kinda BTC... hah. Sorry to hear about this, I'd totally lose my shit. Is it usually safe to keep BTC for long periods of time in your SR account? I don't even bother with wallets, I just send everything straight to my account.

Sorry to hear that..
As a hardcore btc miner i have a small linux box responsible to hold my wallet (always encrypted).
Every transaction goes through this box and i never use online wallets. Never installed any software on this besides the
ones needed for its normal operation. Finally i never logon to this box from untrusted machines to keep my passwords safe.
Password is changed every 3 months and it will be 18+ characters long. My firewall is set up to allow only http and btc
network access.  Everything else is blocked.

Im also considering buying this [WARNING: ***CLEARNET***] http://www.bitcointrezor.com/
to make it even more secure..

Yep.
Not the first; not the last.

Two main avenues for breaching accounts are Andoid/phone-based wallet access/apps (vulnerabilities), and PC cmalware compromise (includes "trojaned" wallet/BTC apps).

I lost a bit recently in their tumbler - the block where the BTC went AWOL is corrupted, with nop timestamp or IP relay info.
One can only guess as to whether system error or malfeasance are responsible...

Sorry for your loss man.  I only wished I got on the BTC bandwagon earlier, I have no idea how I missed it, I bet there are a lot of people out there than mined early and often and are now sitting on a gold mine.  I always just miss the bus, although I do enjoy mining as a hobby now.

Who ever hacked the wallet and withdrew the BTC has also changed the password to the wallet. I just tried to open it, and it says my password is incorrect.

Wow if I would have like 1200 BTC I would say alaska please send me 1000 tabs. Holy shit.
Sorry I had to post it. ;D

I don't quite understand why you store this crazy amount of money in an online wallet. I know that does not help. Really sorry for you but if you had 1200 BTC then I don't think you have any money problems whatsoever. Insane.

If they can trace BTC to and from the SR and bust people, you can hunt the fuckers down and get your money back. Or atleast, you know, murder them in some horrific manner. Molotov cocktails are cheap and dirty :D
But that does suck. I assume you were using a PC, which you use for other purposes as well?

Does anyone have any idea how the malware was loaded? Could it come from uploading a new PGP key?
Title: Re: Lost 1269.00BTC on Blockchain
Post by: nobodyenduser on September 21, 2013, 09:04 pm
Malware could have been loaded a hundred different ways depending on your browsing habits. Though being new to PGP you have peaked my interest about if it is possible from uploading a PGP key but I seriously doubt it.

I wouldn't trust my system to be safe unless a complete reformat and reinstall of the OS was performed. Being a newbie I was just thinking about using blockchain.info because of their mixing. Maybe it would be ok if you kept the BTC in there for the shortest amount of time possible.

Sorry for your loss..
