I have personally never had an order cancelled on me...fortunately, I've got a UID below 5000, a couple dozen orders in escrow, and a perfect rating.
But a friend of mine, new to the site, got his first order cancelled. He was really concerned about this, as I hadn't really explained the current environment where new buyers need to build up a reputation before vendors will let them use escrow...he had no idea why they cancelled his order, and he was pretty bothered by it. Once I explained what was up, he was fine, and I pointed him to a couple of vendors who I felt comfortable would not rip him off if he finalized early so he could build up his rating.
Then it occurred to me...why not simply provide a mechanism where, when you cancel the order, you are given a list of reasons to choose from ("Out of stock", "Outside of shipping area", "Not enough successful orders", etc) along with a custom box where you can type out the reason.
That way, buyers get informed why their order was cancelled giving them a better experience in that somewhat jarring situation, and vendors have a way of communicating the situation without having to send a private message (or worse, have to read a private message wondering why the order was cancelled, and then reply explaining).

makes total sense, when a vendor cancels an order I always wonder what's the problem.

thats a good idea.... however until it is implemented we shall keep doing it how we do it. We always message every customer prior to canceling there order giving them a reason so hopefully they return. Not all vendors make time for this but we do as customer satisfaction is a must.
