Did a bunch of research, and it seems that most bitcoin exchangers only accept wire transfers, checks, and ACH. Many people have suggested to use prepaid cards (like visa gift cards), but I can't find any vendors that accept credit cards.
Dwalla does accept credit cards, but you can't be anonymous with them as they require SSN verification. Other exchangers require some kind of other verification as well that makes anonymity impossible, such as phone number verification.
How does everyone here do it? Where does everyone get their bitcoins from? Or do you not bother with anonymity at all? Maybe there's something I'm missing here...

Look into Exchangebitcoins.com, they accept cash that you can deposit into their account from your local bank. Also look into instawallet.org to shuffle your money.
-
www.btc-e.com => sign up there => go to finances => deposit USD => choose "interkassa.com" as deposit method => choose any prepaid stuff available in your country (I use Ukash) to deposit USD on account => buy bitcoins => withdraw bitoins to SR => trippin' balls

Just make sure to add an intermediate wallet between btc-e and SR.

This is indeed the quickest, cheapest, and easiest way to go currently. The time averages about 2hrs. and the fee is an infinitesimal rate of .054%.

+1
Check around, the consensus seems to be that Exchangebitcoins.com is fast & hassle free. I've tried it myself & I can say the hardest part is filling out that long deposit slip.

Buy them wherever you want. Then move them through multiple instawallet, mtgox, and other exchange/ewallet accounts, using tor. Split the coins into small amounts into each wallet, then send them on to another set of wallets, splitting them again. If you really paranoid, go play on some bitcoin gambling sites that have low risk (so you don't lose all your coins!), that way your coins get mixed with other users and it doesn't look like you were trying to mix them. Then send each set of coins to a separate SR address.

Looks like I have two new options to try out, thanks pulpfictionbro and lemming1981.
When depositing the cash into exchangebitcoins.com's account, does the deposit slip ask for my own details, my name, address, etc? Or only the details of the account I'm depositing into?
lemming1981: I'll try that out as well. Hopefully none of those two sites involved ask for any sort of verification.
BitcoinPot: the point is I can't "buy them wherever I want" because all places are asking for identification. That's not anonymous at all.

My point was not hiding the fact that you purchased bitcoins, which is completely legal and have legitimate uses. Its to hide the fact that they went to SR. If you move them around enough and mix them with coins from other users, there is no trail leading from SR back to you. They have no way of proving that you didn't send them to other users for legitimate purposes.

Oh ok, my bad didn't see what you were saying there. Of course I'd preferably like to make it completely anonymous, but if that's not possible, then I'll have no choice but to do what you suggested.
lemming1981: Just tried your method and I got another barrier. I chose interkassa, and since I have a visa gift card, chose the "world visa" option. It ended up redirecting to some other site called liqpay.com that required an SMS validation. Oh well.
I'll try out the cash deposit option with exchangebitcoins.com next, and if that doesn't work will just have to use BitcoinPot's suggestion.
Can someone answer my other question though? Does that cash deposit slip require my personal information, like my name? That wouldn't be good because BoA or Wells Fargo can easily ask for my license or something.
Thank you.

If you read the posts about exchangebitcoins you will find out all you need to know.....but I can tell you that you won't need your id. :-)

As Jackstraw stated, read the proper thread. The short answer: none of your personal info goes on another persons deposit slip.

There're other options, like UKash, find where you can locally get UKash voucher and make it useful via btc-e.com
Also don't be in despair with SMS validation, you can google for "virtual number for sms" and get yourself a virtual number, without need to link it with physical cellphone. I think it should be some little fee for such number, but this is anonymous and helpful.

You dont need to present any id at the bank or otherwise. The only thing they will have is your photo on the camera so say cheese :)

Thank you for replying, everyone.
A couple of you mentioned a post/thread with details about exchangebitcoins.com's cash deposit progress. Did a search for both "exchangebitcoins" and "exchangebitcoins.com" and can't find this "thread" people are talking about. Can someone care to link me?
Also, do I get the deposit slip at the bank and fill it out there with the required info?
lucymylove: I'm in the USA and I don't think they have UKash here. The virtual number thing is interesting, but again, paying for it is usually not anonymous.
Anyhow, I'll probably give this cash deposit for exchangebitcoins.com a whirl this weekend. Thanks.
-
There are a couple of different threads about exchangebitcoins.com I just found one on the second page of the security section.
Just make sure you do it when the bank is open if you are waiting till this weekend would be some advice I would give.

no need to buy anonymously. nothing illegal about buying BTC.
what you want to do is send them through either a wallet residing on your encrypted volume on your personal machine or send it through InstaWallet accessed over TOR.
Basically, break the chain of custody of the coins. Transfer them to a wallet you can deny having control of before you send them to SL.
-
...Also, do I get the deposit slip at the bank and fill it out there with the required info?...
Yes. There will be standing desks in the branch lobby that have deposit slips stacked on them. A few banks might still use different slips for checking and savings accounts -- the slips will be labeled as one or the other. In that case, just be sure to use the ones for checking (unless ExchangeBitcons says otherwise).
If you'd prefer to fill out the slip at home it's doubtful that any bank employee would think it odd were you to grab a few and walk back out the door. If anyone does ask what you're doing, simply tell them: taking them to fill out later at home and then return with a deposit.

It's anonymous, cause most of those services selling virtual numbers accept PayPal, and in PayPal you can buy things with your card with max cost 100$, cause after this you will need to verify your card.
So create email account via Tor, then connect to PayPal via Tor, create account add your credit card in PayPal's credit cards list, then buy virtual number via Tor and that's how you do it ;)
-
USEFUL TIP: I took a completed BOA deposit slip in to fund my exchangebitcoins.com account thinking, wow, this is so easy. Much to my surprise, you have to fill out another type of deposit slip known as an 'out of state deposit slip' unless you live in Cali I think. No big deal really but I did request a few more out of state deposit slips for future needs. :)
The cashier never acted as though my transaction was strange or unusual in any way l if that concerns some of you.

Can someone tell me what is wrong with my technique?
Buy MoneyPak with cash (hoodie and sunglasses optional), send MoneyPak code to a fake account on any exchange that accepts them, and have them transfer new BTC to anonymous Mt. Gox account. Once in Mt. Gox, just transfer to SR account using a new transfer code.
I don't see how I am connected to any of this in a hard way at all. All accounts are anonymous and small amounts.
-
That's the only trail I leave.
Even if I use a onlinewallet with Tor to put the money on silkroad, the first step is transfer the money to an exchange, and they can track it very easily, if they get a warrant. But they can't prove I send the money to bitcoin and can't prove I ordered something, they just can prove I bought bitcoins, and that's not illegal anyway.
As it's them who have to prove you ordered, and not you have to prove you don't order, I believe it's not a big problem. I even bought with Liberty Reserve out of silkroad (using a fake account with other proxy, sandbox and in private browsing) , they do not accept Tor).
In dubio pro reo

Who does not accept Tor? Simple way around this is to use a VPN service. As stated, there is no violation in buying BTC but rather what we might use them for.
Buy BTC's. Run them through a wallet or two, transfer to SR. Order and have fun.
Wearing sunglasses and hoodies while purchasing MP or making a deposit is ridiculous and foil hat territory.
-
Right. And the sunglasses and hoodie comment was a joke. I was just trying to show how easy it is to get too paranoid.

Liberty Reserve. You can't create an account with Tor using LR.

I use hotspot shield, ultrasurf and I'll try JAP next time. What VPN service do you recommend?

That's ok for me, but it would be even better if you could buy it totally anonymous.

a prepaid throwaway cellphone is cheap, Net10 is cheap...
-
Thanks for all the replies.
An update: I went the cash deposit route, and the money was in my account the next morning I checked. Good enough service for me!
My next best option I can try next time is the moneypak route via an exchanger here on SR. Seems to be pretty quick and hassle-free as well.
Good luck everyone.

A good VPN will walk right past this locked door.

What is the problem with $$$ to Paxum verified account=> mt.gox anonymous account => anonymous wallet (or 2) => silk ???
