i suppose i understand how PGP works and what not.. but in general do most people leave their name/address when placing an order with pgp or do most vendors not really mind either/or?

Always always encrypt your address. It is for your own protection. There are online encryption engines, like http://www.igolder.com/pgp and I go there with TOR all the time. Most vendors don't mind and actually prefer that regular messages that don't contain sensitive info be sent WITHOUT encryption. But always encrypt your address, and if the vendor doesn't use encryption consider ordering from one that does.

Also, privnote is not a suitable substitute for PGP/GPG encryption.
