Hi. =]
Recently ordered some weed, noticed a very strong, pungent, musky, unpleasant smell from it. I had heard of moldy weed before so I went and looked it up. I look at this page to research it:
http://www.the420shack.com/2011/01/how-to-tell-if-your-smoking-moldy-weed.html
I have taken some pictures too. I would just like to know for sure that this weed is in-fact moldy. So hoping an expert can help me out :).

Bump to save this from getting lost.

If it smells like Windex or ammonia then yes. Yes it is. Will update if the pictures ever load.
edit: No. It does not look moldy to me. Is it dry? Usually only weed that was packaged wet will mold. Or it molded on the plant.
This stuff looks good. It might just have a really strong odor.
The white is "Trichomes" THC crystals.
-
Thanks for the reply! Did you look at the 420shack link though? The white areas, especially in the close up don't look like trichomes, looks like a layer of white over them. And yes the smell is reminiscent of Ammonia.
-
there are a few different types of trichomes.
Some have large round heads on them. Some are just like sticky hairs that have no head on them...
That weed looks fine to me from looking at it.
Was crispy dry when you received it?
-
It wasn't noticeably moist. The smell was bearable at first but seems to be getting stronger as time passes on. Hmm.
-
Just let it dry out until it's crispy.
You'll be fine smoking a few grams of weed if it has a little mold on it.
-
Could be a lousy job in drying/curing. Put in a tight lid jar, and air-out the jar with top off for an hour 2-3 times per day until cured better. Ammonia smell is def a sign of mold, or even a visual that is not trichomes. Anyway, didn't see your pics, but if the smell is changing, let them get air because if they are still moist you could get mold by leaving the bag closed up. Just a precaution, but I'd let it sit out for a day in a shoebox!
-
I would let it sit out until it breaks apart easily.
Then smoke away. It won't harm you any...
I had an entire crop of UK Cheese go moldy on me. I turned the most of it in to hash and oil... Lots of the top buds were still very good though.
-
I'm letting it sit out now.
The idea of mold is making me feel ill though. Hence why I wanted visually confirmation one way or the other. Just can't get over how there are small parts of the bud in the close-ups that just look they they have a furry white layer on them.. Coupled with the smell?
-
You can always process the bud into bho if it does have mold.
-
By the way when I say white furry layer, I am referring to the few parts that you cannot see any green through, like they're just a furry layer of white..
-
Well if you have a small magnifying glass you can look and see if it looks like Fuzz or is actually "trichomes"
I wouldn't worry about it.. Even if there is mold on it, there is such a small amount that it wouldn't hurt you any.
If you're really worried.. Spray some Hydrogen peroxide on it and let it dry. It will kill any mold off if there is any.
Personally. That stuff looks fine in the picture...

What you probably have there is weed that was grown by a greedy fucker then sold to a dickhead. 80% of weed is water, so the drier it is the better deal you're getting. It's not dried properly then it will get a stagnant smell like if you don't properly wring out a facecloth. If left for longer then it will develop mould, but most of the time it's bad long before this happens.
What tends to happen is a grower will sell a load of damp green to muppet wannbe dealers who they have no respect for, who are then faced with a dilemma: dry it out properly and lose most of the weight and money, or try to shift it before it goes bad. So they shift as much as they can until it starts to smell bad then dry the rest out quickly once it's already started to turn.
The best tasting weed is dried slowly in a cool room with low humidity and good airflow until it's bone dry before it goes anywhere near a set of scales, not weighed wet and kept in sweaty plastic bags until its rotten, then baked on a radiator until the smell is almost bearable.
-
When drying weed out you don't want the humidity too low. If weed is dried out too fast it will keep a lot of gross "green" taste in your pot.
10 days 21'C @ 50% RH would be ideal.

It doesn't look mouldy to me :)
I zoomed in as much as i could and all i can see are trichomes :)
-
That's what I thought.. I could not see any mold.
-
Have you smoked it yet??
If it gets you high.. fuck it!!
I've smoked plenty of moldy bud in the past if it makes you feel better!!!
-
I'd have to agree here. Looks fine, no mold on there. If you don't mind, who'd you get it from? Was it a new seller or an established vendor? How about the strain? Maybe that could help explain some of what you may be seeing. Either way, smoke up. All is good ;D
-
That doesn't look moldy to me.
I think you are looking at the trichomes. Google some pictures of trichomes and you will be able to compare better.
Mold generally forms inside the bud near the stem. It is fuzzy and white-ish. Twist/break a bud in half, perpendicular to the stem, and examine the cross section. Mold will be heaviest around the stem and dissipate as you move to the outer edge of the bud.
I suspect you have received some very nice bud and are not used to seeing so many fat and bloated trichomes. Did you smoke some and it made you paranoid? :-P
Enjoy it - I think you are in the clear.

I agree with ^ stuff looks great.
