Title: Music is getting shallower and shallower
Post by: joywind on June 12, 2013, 06:29 pm
I cannot see how people can listen to mainstream music today and go crazy about it.  Music has gone so far downhill with songs like "Throw Some D's", "Miss New Booty", "Get Low", "Let's Go", "I.N.D.E.P.E.N.D.E.N.T. and stuff like Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers.. Give me a break. Why do people buy into music that is so shallow?

It's a reflection of the society that produces it!

You consider those songs you listed as actual music?  Try some Grateful Dead.  Real music is made with real instruments.  Not computers and synthesizers.

99 Problems... and a tune ain't mine.

Try listening to symphonies and concertos... get a record player. Go crazy.

Mainstream... you mean (below) average... the Gaussian Curve of mediocrity.

It's funny how everything that you named is several years old.  New music has gotten even worse.

This juvenile recently signed a six million dollar record deal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WcRXJ4piHg

Gotta agree with SeatTeam6 here. The shallow music reflects our shallow society. I personally haven't listened to popular music in a very long time. Its sad. Back in the day, popular music was actually good and has stood the test of time (think Temptations, Marvin Gay, Elvis...). I highly doubt any of the garbage out today will be looked upon fondly in 40 or 50 years.

No wonder the record industry is in shambles

Who knows.  People are still quite fond of NWA and Eazy E and it's been over twenty years.

Crackers all over America were pretty outraged when that came out and I bet that they would have said that it would not be looked upon fondly in 25 years.  Oh but it is! ;D

You consider those songs you listed as actual music?  Try some Grateful Dead.  Real music is made with real instruments.  Not computers and synthesizers.

How is a song made on a computer less "real" than one made on a guitar? It's all about the talent of the person using the instrument, not the instrument itself you fucking snob.

Lol with the insults when you don't even know who I am.  We can obviously see how this new generation "music" you listen to has effected you.  Bunch of fuckin idiots.

^  the point is that anyone could do it; it doesnt require any special skill.  Anyone in the world can learn how to use programs on computers, but not anyone can pick up guitar(drums ect.) and become a legend on it.

You obviously have never sat down with DAW software and tried to use it. It is not "easy" to make electronic music and your ignorant dismissal of an entire genre's artists as not being skilled is offensive. It's not as though you can just load up Ableton and arrange some beeps and boops and call it a song; you really have to know how to write music just as much as if you were writing a piano or guitar song.

When these artists go on stage though is it something they already put together and they just repeat it, or are they up there creating brand new patterns of sound?  I do have a bad habit of calling music i dont like shit, but doesnt music you dont like sound like shit to you?  Theres just something about going to a concert and seeing the band creating brand new music right in front of your eyes thats magical.  Just not the same as watching someone type on a computer(no matter how hard it may be).  I could give them some respect if they get up there and improvise though.  Any idiot can repeat something a million times

It's a bit of both really, that's what DJing is. DJs play recorded music for an audience but are also live mixing it and adding interesting sounds to create a new experience. At least, that's what good DJs do, some wannabes just hit the play button and dance around.

I'm also guilty of this (calling music I don't like shit), which I probably shouldn't because music is probably the most subjective thing ever. Yeah it's a bit dumb if the DJ is just hitting play but like I said, those are crappy DJs. Good ones do improvise and get creative with their sounds.

What's more important than skill in playing instruments is skill in composing and arranging. That's what really makes a good song, and it's necessary whether a live band or a DAW is being used.

Hell yea man i may not listen to it but i think ill learn a bit more about it so i can give it a level of respect.  Gotta keep an open mind otherwise you become a relic.  Alright with that being said what about justin bieber, taylor swift and the like?  Shit right?  Even though we just went over calling music shit lol.

Thats whats sweet about the Dead(one of the things at least) they go up there and play a song similar to the original, but never the same.  Theyll spend 20 minutes venturing off into uncharted terrritory with those isruments.  The whole band at that not just one guitar going on a solo.  It would seem to me during this period( the 20 min jam) that theyre composing on the fly.

The U.S. could actually use a new age NWA, they shook things up and put the heat on the police!
