Title: SR stopped working on OrbWeb
Post by: mrt on July 30, 2013, 02:17 pm
Hello,

In the last couple of days there seems to have been made some changes to
Silk Road that makes it impossible to log into Silk Road using the OrbWeb
browser for android.

This is a very annoying thing as OrbWeb is the only tor-enabled browser
(at least that I know of) available for Android, so please reply if you know
how to get around this annoying thing or know of any other browser to
use.

I love having the ability to browse Silk Road on my mobile phone ...

Hey there,

Browsing SR on a mobile device is not only unsafe but dangerous.  Particularly if you're logging into it with the same account you use for purchases.

Mobile devices are not secure for tor browsing

Where is this information coming from and what makes you think it is insecure? I've never logged into sr on my phone but I use the forums all the time. Why is it different than using tor anywhere else. They can't see what your doing on tor.

While on holiday i've had real difficulty logging in from my mobile, every time i tried to type in the address for SR from the check tor page it just hung on me, the only way i managed it was to follow a link to SR instead of typing in the address.

A recent update to orbot/orweb  changed the default to "refuse all cookies". If you change the orweb settings to 'accept all cookies' or you can try to just whitelist SR. I found I couldn't get the whitelist to work with SR though. It makes no practical difference for me, so I just use 'accept all'.
If you can get the SR login page but no further, this is probably your problem

I was having a similar problem as well. In my situation it was solved by changing the settings concerned with how your device is viewed by websites.

Usually, your phone is recognized by sites as a mobile device so you can be redirected to the mobile version of a site. Since the attacks on Silk Road it seems mobile device requests are rerouted to the log on screen.

Anyways, you wont find such settings in Orweb but you can download another browser that does. I suggest Easy Browser Pro. In the advanced settings, look where it says, 'Need change UA...' and switch it to PC.

While you're in there don't forget to enable the proxy port and set to 8118 (the 'torified' port Orbot sets up).

Hope this helps.

P.S. While I do think that the mobile phone would be the weakest link in safety. If you insist on using it, especially for purchases or moving money at least consider getting a prepaid phone.
