Title: help with using localbitcoins
Post by: mrxempire on July 08, 2013, 10:39 pm
I used to use a bitinstant moneygram cash deposit at my local supermarket to get my bitcoins. Then I discovered bitfloor, so i started making anonymous cash deposits at BOA because bitfloor charged less fees. Then bitfloor got shut down so i went back to bitinstant. Now apparently bitinstant requires proof of I.D to buy bitcoins now, so I need a new anonymous method to get them. I've heard of two possible options: localbitcoins, or using a third party bitcoin vendor on SR to get them. I would rather learn how to use localbitcoins because getting them from SR seems a little sketchy. Could someone please give me step by step instructions on how to use localbitcoins anonymously to get my coins? it seems a little confusing

Find a vendor

Request a trade- when trade is requested the coins from the vendor wallet are moved to escrow where they are held til payment is received.

Pay with whatever payment method the vendor accepts (BoA deposit, western union, prepaid debit, paypal, cash) any payment method u can think of at least one vendor will accept,

After payment the vendor will release the coins from escrow and they will be transferred to your localbitcoins wallet where then u can send them off to SR or any other wallet site.

thanks man sounds easy enough. Can I use my localbitcoins wallet as the backup wallet in case SR gets shut down or something

Localbitcoins is very legit, as long as you find a reputable seller, it's super easy considering the website has it's own escrow system and wallet built in

"Can I use my localbitcoins wallet as the backup wallet in case SR gets shut down or something"

Is using your SR wallet as your main wallet a seriously bad idea, in case something happens to SR? Do most people keep their bitcoins in off-line wallets?

Usually offline wallets... SR has a backup address in the settings menu just in case the site ever gets taken down.

How do you keep anonymous when paying  through escrow?  You need to provide personal information on any of the money exchange

When I used to use bitfloor to buy bitcoins, all I had to do was go to BOA and fill out an out of state deposit slip, and give it to the cashier. Didn't have to give a name or even show an I.D. I imagine using localbitcoins to do a BOA deposit will follow the same protocol, although I have yet to try it

You don't have to give out any info when using local bitcoins. You just request an order, the seller accepts (i think), the coins go into escrow and you have 90 minutes to make the deposit, get back to your computer and click "I made the deposit" or something.

Just go with a high rated seller and it's incredibly easy and anonymous. Just know that if you go with the bank deposit method, the bitcoins are more expensive.

Use a non identifying email address, if you want complete anonymity. I just got another TorMail.org email address.

Though the old line of thinking used to be "It's not illegal to buy bitcoins" - We now know that the taxing crooks in Washington, don't like not having their dirty little paws on the money being exchanged here.

So the new line of thinking is. - Anonymity. As much and as obscure as you can make it.

Using a Tor Mail account. Preferably a newly created one. Add's that extra level of obscurity.

Let's all stick together and keep this place running, as stealthy and as carefully as is necessary.

In this current climate, of a government spying on it's people, completely illegally,  there's no such thing as being "TOO" careful!  ;)

what other method of payment is ther other than BOA deposits, and how do you do them? Id feel uncomfortable sending any money through the mail to someone

If Dwolla is actually puling funds from my account information for paying then, it can transfer it from a few wallets and it's tumbled. Correct?

I've only done two localbitcoins transactions and both were through BofA deposits using escrow. Very fast and convenient. Some vendors accept WU and Moneygram and other cash methods while some prefer meet up in person cash in hand and you watch the transfer. Regardless of how it's done I think the escrow system is a must.

I send my coins to an offline wallet and from there to my SR wallet where I keep not much more than I plan on using quickly.

Hey, how do we know whether a website is clearnet/darknet? I've been going on any website i've needed to use using Tor. I never realized there was a security risk in doing so. If you load up your normal browser, while Tor browser is still running, is this more secure? Are there any telltale signs to show you a website is on the clearnet?

well, to my understanding, and correct me if i'm wrong jagfug, don't simultanously have a clearnet (.com/.ca/.de, etc) site open while having a darknet (.onion) site open in the same browsing session in another tab. This could pose some minor security risks.

That is what I believe the general consensus has been. Haven't really gone over this subject in a while, what with the scrambling for bitcoins, and the government virtually going through our drawers, poking, and prodding, for every bit of data they can get filthy paws on. (Damn Dirty Apes!)

Clearnet is basically that which is not tor/onion sites.  .com .net .org and so on. - Now if you wanted to visit clearnet sites, anonymously using Tor, just don't be logged into SR and perhaps this forum. There are many differing opinions on all of this. - (and really this was about using LocalBitcoins.com) ::)

Though you may be thinking "I should use Tor to access LBC". I say "good idea!" Just log out of SR and here if you're on. Then go up to the green onion and click for a new identity. (IP addy)

I myself, flip between Tor and Google constantly. Avoiding the known heavy tracking sites like facebook and Google, etc.
I guess I can't avoid Google if I'm surfing the clearnet with chrome. - Well this whole 'can of worms' I've gotten myself into, I'm getting myself out of. There are miles upon miles of tekkies threads pontificating the security breaches possible in these and other scenarios. :o

Let's keep to LocalBitcoins and how to use them. - I was uncomfortable with it at first. Then I made a payment at BoA, walked out the door, and got a text that my bitcoins were in my wallet. - I suddenly wasn't uncomfortable any more.  ;D

Peace

jagfug

PS. @FITW - Thanks for getting me into that one! :P - Also thanks for the initial compliment.  ::) Karma up. Whole page!
(I haven't given Karma in ages! ;))

Nice, man! I know how it feels to get that text, even on a throwaway phone.....FLAWLESS VICTORY. Let's keep the ball rolling. Also I concur with your analysis of tor browsing sessions/identities/exit nodes and the constant switching. But part of me thinks this SR is going to be a honeypot soon if it isn't already. I've been around for long enough to know how hard it used to be to just log on! Now it's automatic and runs 10x as fast. hmmm.

Just like in breaking bad.....have your GO bag ready ahhahahahah

Using LocalBitcoins is easy:

Make an account...Than click buy Bitcoins on top....in "Change location" put your zip code in and see who is selling close to you...and for how much.

Some only sell to establish buyers, but many will sell to anyone....I always pick someone with a good history with good transactions and read the reviews.

OK,  now you have a vendor you like....click the buy button...you will see a box asking "How much you wish to buy?" add your dollars and the BTC will calculate it self...

then add a message below like    "when can you meet?"   the seller will return your message through LocalBitcoins ..(you will see a notification pop up when they reply.)..

Now when you hit the "Send trade request"  it will lock in the price you see at that moment.....so you want to make sure you can trade that day or the next....if you wait to long the seller will cancel because you are holding up their money.....YES the BTC you asked for is locked...and the vendor has to complete the transaction or cancel it.....so be ready for their response to your request.

you will get a secret #...and see a receipt of your transaction..( never give out your #) when you meet up and exchange the money they will complete the transaction and read you the secret # you have..if they get it right , that means your money is in your account...done!...a no brainer!!!...just meet in a very public place ..i did all my stuff on my i-phone....

the best part you can send PM's to each other through the LocalBitcoins site...so no personal info needs to be given...Plus ..IT is NOT ILLEGAL to buy BTCS!!

Now you can also buy BTC online with bank deposits for those who offer it, click "Buy bitcoins online in United States" and see who you can buy from online by using a cash deposit option at the bank of their choosing.....and it seem safe, because your money is held in escrow....its that easy...

I got some today and it worked out great..i had a good seller who gave me a fair price... :o...power to the people

This looks promising and I have BoAs all over my town, but I'm having trouble finding any sellers that take a bank transfer through them. I tried clicking on "national bank transfer" and "transfers with specific bank" but I only see BBVA Continental, whatever that is. Is it just me? Are there other anonymous options? I can't remember if Western Union is anonymous.

hey if anyones still interested to know, I was successfully able to use localbitcoins to get some BTC the other day. Used an out of state deposit slip at my nearest BOA to do it. However, there were a couple things i didn't like about the site. For instance, since you are buying the coins from another person, and not a business, the seller can charge whatever they like for the coins. I bought my coins yesterday, when the coins were under 100 dollars, but there were absolutely no sellers  selling their coins for the market price. I paid about 105 per coin. Secondly, with many sellers there is a minimum purchase amount. I was trying to get about 3 or 4 hundred in coins, but when I went to try and buy them, I was told that I had to get a minimum of 500 dollars worth of coins. Now, this wasn't a big problem for me, as i am always going to need more coins eventually, but i could forsee this as a problem to some others who don't have as much spare money laying around. Anyway, thats my two cents. I'm gonna look for a different site to get coins from, but if all else fails at least i can get them from here

If they don't raise the price, how are they supposed to make money? The work they do isn't free.

$5.00+ per coin isn't shabby, a $300 MP trade on moneypak trader dot com would carry a 40% fee ( F-that ).

Were there any other sort off fees involved by the time your coins arrived on SR?

There are sellers for every level each with their own mark up. $5 per coin really isn't bad at all. I've bought as little as $50 worth for a similar markup.

It takes 6 confirmations before your funds show up at SR. Some wallets only need 2. Sometimes it takes a while, patience.

I have no BOA, Chase, Wells Fargo, anywhere within 80 miles.  I think my only options are either Moneypak, or MoneyGram.  Is this a legit method on localbitcoins or is fraught with scammers?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

When I used bitinstant, I would fill out a moneygram slip and and pay it at a supermarket help desk. I figure the LBC moneygram option would probably follow similar steps
