Title: How to respond to Inquiry from my Bank?
Post by: leeds4408 on January 02, 2013, 03:09 am
Greetings SR friends
I recently received a small letter in the mail from my Bank (although I had opted entirely for e-statements to reduce paper trail) regarding a seemingly vague inquiry regarding my recent wiring of money to a 3rd party vendor (pretty popular one I think) that I used (for the 1st time) to buy Bitcoins
the 3rd party is a bank located in a foreign country (foreign to the US that is), but that said, I've had several international wire transfers before (for IOPs) without any question.

So I was wondering what would be a safe and popular response to such an inquiry, in case a rep from my Bank attempts to contact me regarding my intent behind this wire? Certainly I do not want to mention anything related to Bitcoins? or perhaps this vendor is pretty well known to this point that many commercial banks are aware of this vendor's participation with Bitcoin currency?

I want to go ahead and deposit more money and purchase more Bitcoins with this vendor (same bank for the sake of practical convenience) but I want to make sure if such inquiries are ultimately harmless and using the same 3rd party vendor is okay?

Thanks everyone

So I was wondering what would be a safe and popular response to such an inquiry, in case a rep from my Bank attempts to contact me regarding my intent behind this wire?

You say "That wiring was authorized, not fraud. Thank you for your vigilance."

And if they say anything else, a simple "I don't wish to discuss the details of my transactions any further" will do.
You dont need to explain your actions further. Currency speculation is legitimate. If you invested in bitcoin when it first came out, or even a few months ago, you would have made a massive profit.

Thanks everyone for your replies and advice
Yes, there has been no suggestion pointing towards fraudulent activity, in which case they would have probably called me directly (according to previous experiences)
so I'll just look at it as a mere acknowledgement of my wire transfer and nothing more

Best regards

Your money is your money. They are probably just letting you know about the transactions in-case you have not authorized them yourself. This is pretty common for multiple small transactions.

Yeah, with wires there is some info that the bank will need due to regulations. You never know the banks AML (anti-money laundering) dept might already have an open investigation with the 3rd party you sent to. Just be real careful when it comes to using you bank account for anything illegal.

could always create a new account and do the same wire transfer and see if you get a notice for that account to test the waters.
