Damn I wish I wasnt too lazy to do this, feels like homework damnit!! Would love to try some absinthe, maybe i'll just order some one day now that its at the fingertips :D fuck smear campaigns on drugs though, they are much more enlightening than staying sober...

the two smear campaigns are remarkable similar. the "reefer madness" campaign was started by the textile industries because hemp was quickly becomeing the material dejour. fearing profit loss, they worked with upcoming poltictions to ignite the white majorities fear of minorties seducing their daughters into consorting with lesser races. cannabis became the root of societies evils, side effects were twisted and exagerated or just completely made up, and goverment funded scientfic studies were falsified. the politicos got voted in to stop the coruption of whites and textile barons got rid of hemp as a competitor.
Absinthe basically went through the same cycle; it became the liquor dejour, especially among popular artist. traditional wine makers saw that their profits were take a big dip, and teamed up with ambitious politcians to cast absinthe as the cause of societies evils. once again side affects were exagerated to ludicous proportions or just made up. absinthe was banned out fear and ignorance, politcians got top positions, and wine makers stayed on top of the market.

Absinthe and Cannabis were both prohibited mainly due to smear campaigns, which were initiated by industries that felt threatened by their popularity. Like most illogical events in history, you can simply follow the money trail to find out the motivation for the smear campaigns. In the case of Absinthe prohibition, it is clear that the winemaker's associations played a large role in both Switzerland and France. This was spurred on by a parallel temperance movement that quickly spread to the U.S. and was both cultural and religious based. Both press and government were likely paid off to spin stories, like the case of the Swiss alcoholic who killed his wife. He had been extremely intoxicated and drank wine, brandy and absinthe before the crime, but Absinthe was blamed as the sole cause of hysteria. Marijuana prohibition was spearheaded by the titans of the cotton industry, who rightfully feared that hemp would become the primary crop for producing textiles due to it being significantly cheaper and easier to grow. Part of the cultural smear campaign for cannabis was the re-branding of it as Marijuana, thereby painting it as a destructive, violence-inducing drug of the Mexicans. The tobacco and alcohol industries also likely played a role, and have certainly been lobbying against it's legalization for decades. An interesting parallel between the two is that both cannabis and absinthe were used for there medicinal properties for centuries before prohibition of either. Reefer madness was the famous propaganda piece that further perpetuated the lies of cannabis causing violent and delusional outbursts. In a similar way, absinthe was portrayed as causing delusions, hallucinations and insanity due to the little known slightly psychoactive substance Wormwood. In conclusion, both Cannabis and Absinthe were bastardized by industries that had vested financial interest in curbing popularity, which was further perpetuated by tyrannical governments, media sensationalism and downright propaganda and lies. The same system of connections between private industry, government and media is continuing to perpetuate specific drug prohibition while simultaneously promoting legal, parallel, profitable drugs.

The smear campaigns against absinthe and marijuana were, at their roots, not about the substances themselves but rather against the respective counter-culture movements that they represented. Both marijuana and absinthe grew to be important symbols of not only artists, but those living 'bohemian' and fringe lifestyles. It's important to note that these smear campaigns were conducted in countries that were incredibly dependent on the conservative, capitalistic lifestyles of their citizens. Citizens, especially the lower and middle class, that worked in the labor and production sector, raised families and lived within the boundaries of a 'civilized' society contributed the most to the profit and power of their country's government. Both absinthe and marijuana were symbols of a trend that moved away from this lifestyle which was so conducive to capitalism. These 'deviants' worked as artists, philosophers, poets and writers. They did not purchase goods at the same rate as other citizens. Their creative output, while incredibly important culturally, was not seen as a contribution to the structure and power of the country. Because of the threat of this trend, governments turned against these substances. Their goal was to keep their citizens in line, to remove the temptations that could lead them to becoming both free-thinkers and suspicious of the system that was deemed so important to the survival of society.
In recent years, absinthe has begun to become more popular again and many of its regulations have been or are in the process of being eliminated. We can only hope that marijuana will also begin to be as deregulated as it should be, and that it won't take as long as it did for absinthe.

Good answers so far. There are still more to give away.

I wish you shipped gallons of that moonshine to the Netherlands
+1 for a great competition. I love "Reefer Madness"

It's a shame you only ship to the U.S. since i'm tempted to share my opinion but +1 and a bump anyways.

Multiple similarities may be observed between the absinthe and marijuana smear campaigns. One of the most significant of these is that both campaigns focused on convincing the public of the substances' damage to society and the average citizen. In both cases, this often included the indication that the substance caused an increase in violent crimes--the Reefer Madness campaign focused rather heavily on blaming minorities as well. These instances of anti-substance propaganda (in addition to the often racist reasoning behind it) can be thought of as both the normal person and the government's desire to more easily explain atrocities so that the public may rest easier. It was much less difficult for the government to say that marijuana caused an increase in beatings than publicly acknowledge that there was nothing they could do about violent crime. By implying that the banning of absinthe would reduce the number of destroyed families, anti-absinthe propaganda campaigns touched the heart of the average person and eventually resulted in its prohibition. Eventually, these pieces of propaganda failed to convince the public (at least to the same degree as originally), and neither absinthe nor marijuana is prohibited to the degree that it was originally in France and the US respectably.

Reefer madness was introduced for mainly economic, and political reasons. The introduction of prohibition i believe was economical (all brewers were in Germany att,) social, political (as always) and medical. People were just learning the side effects to over drinking. Social because to many people were getting drunk att and factory could no longer preform properly. Those are my 2 cents

Pathenry,
What would you say is the best way to prepare the absinthe without an absinthe fountain? Is there a ghetto method?
I may even purchase one on ebay just so I can enjoy your sample as intended
-
The way I prepare it is to pour an oz of absinthe into a glass ( I had a reservoir glass but I broke it :() then I put three sugar cubes on my absinthe spoon (you can use a slotted serving spoon) and SLOWLY drizzle ice water over the top of it. You can adjust the absinthe/sugar/water ratio to your own liking. I started heavy on the sugar (like 6 cubes) and a water/absinthe ratio of 5/1 because of the bitterness of absinthe but as I drank it more I grew to really like the herbal bitterness.
I've thought about getting a fountain. Some are really fancy. But an absinthe spoon is a must. They make really nice silver and gold ones.

You make this too easy for me. I'm going to have your threads up really late tonight or tomorrow, and I'm hyperlinking this comment under the Absinthe section.

i feel like no matter what i say it's going to sound like i'm feeding off other answers because everyone has done a good job so far...but yeah they're both similar in the fact that large industries felt threatened so they launched the smear campaigns to try to make people believe the substances were really bad so they could be outlawed. in the whole "reefer madness" ordeal, textile and paper companies who felt that hemp would threaten their businesses worked with others to lead campaigns saying marijuana makes white women want to have sex with blacks/hispanic, and that it had all these negative side effects (which were not true). also the term "marijuana" itself was created around this era to make it sound like a dirty plant. in the campaign for absinthe, vineyard owners who were trying to get business back up after the wine blight teamed up with the temperance movement to turn people against the "green devil". they claimed that absinthe caused crazy hallucinogenic effects, epilepsy, madness, etc because of thujone from the wormwood used in the production of the absinthe (the thujone is actually there, but the effects were highly exaggerated). it was also reported that multiple murders were "blamed on absinthe", so to sum it up, they were both very alike. both campaigns were launched in the first place because certain industries feared that these substances could severely hurt their business.

Okay, just received the flask a few hours ago, so I thought I'd knock out a review before I went out for the night.
First off, I feel it's necessary to address what absinthe really is. It has a reputation of being a semi-psychedelic, higher-level alcoholic beverage. What it really is is a liquer with such an amazing, complex and unique flavor that masks that fact that it has a significantly high proof.
I lived in Paris from 2011-2012, and I made a point of ordering absinthe whenever I ended up at a bar or restaurant that seemed to take it's preparation seriously. That being said, Pathenry's absinthe packs a serious punch. Despite this, it's amazingly drinkable. While bitter straight, if prepared as absinthe should be, Pathenry's concoction is a veritable nectar of the gods.
This is a fairly undeveloped section of silkroad, but one that deserves your attention. It tastes homemade, natural. You can taste the care and effort he put into the particular batch. Most of us think of silkroad as a way to obtain illegal and illicit substances, but Pathenry's absinthe goes beyond that. This is a true, American-made beverage of the highest quality, folks.
Pathenry, I'd encourage you to start your own legitimate absinthe company and market the stuff across the world, if I didn't love the idea of this microbrewed wondrous green potion being exclusively available to silkroad customers, and I assume, your real life friends and acquaintances.

Thanks so much for the review. I have had many ppl suggest I go legit and offer my product on the open market. I have to say that this is always tempting and probably more lucrative. However, the liscencing requirements are not only nearly impossibly restrictive but also quite morally reprehensible to me. Free people need not obtain permission to do things, only slaves do. I own myself and the fruit of my own labors. So long as I do not harm or defraud anyone, it is my right to dispose of those fruits in any manner I deem appropriate. The need to obtain permission suggests that not only do I NOT have ownership of the fruit of my labor but, by proxy, do not have ownership of myself.
I am on The Road as an activist first, as a vendor second. I want to be part of DPR's peacefull revolution.
