Title: Installing an OS to a USB/flash drive - which is the faster storage media?
Post by: MrRibena on November 08, 2011, 12:15 pm
I'm trying to figure out if I should install a lite version of Win7 to a 32gb USB 2.0 stick or to an SD card. In your experience which is quicker? High capacity USB 2.0 sticks are pretty cheap these days so Im leaning towards that.

And before you all say use a linux OS.... no, I shall not be doing that :)

Does this mean you'll always reboot into the USB drive with Windows 7 whenever you want to use Silk Road?

Yes, a pain in the arse for some but its all about the security.

But an encrypted folder or disk should suffice, right?

No need to bootup into a new OS.

Also, you could use VMWare and encrypt the image...

It could, but I like the idea of being able to keep a small USB stick well hidden. Where I keep it no LE will ever be able to find it. I should add I'm just a buyer and not a seller so perhaps this is overkill but better safe than sorry.

You can still use your super-secret hidden usb stick if all you do is encrypt the data on it. IMHO using an encrypted os-key is overkill unless you are a high-volume seller and use random access points and computers to conduct business.

I have a high-speed usb stick that I use with Truecrypt to keep gpg, keys, tor, etc. on it and every time I use it just to be extra careful I run CCleaner and wipe free disk space afterwards. I have no insecurities about my security with this method.
