I'm a bit old school here. I was thinking about this today as a matter of fact.
Best album - Sgt Peppers
Best song - I am the Walrus (also the Beatles)
After that any Pink Floyd from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn to Animals. I like The Wall but it's a little depressing for me. I did see Roger Waters in concert last year doing that one. Fantastic, I was blown away. Yes is pretty cool to listen to as well while trippin'.

heres 10 of mine in no particular order:
blockhead
lemon jelly
bonobo
rjd2
hypnotic brass ensemble
dabrye
deceptikon
daedelus
flying lotus
ratatat
and pretty much anything on ninja tune is good too

Depends on mood but a few:
For the come up..
Pretty Lights
Skrillex
Cut Copy
For the come down..
My morning jacket
Bright Eyes

MODEST MOUSE!!! Hands down... Nothing can compare.
Also Cloud Cult and These Arms Are Snakes
-
Piper at the Gates of Dawn takes you for a real ride... it's almost too much when I'm tripping.
BUT I LOVES IT!
Also, the 17:10 version of in-a-gadda-da-vida is pretty trippy.

Talking Heads
-

4.Bonobo

For the best trip experience I listen to Shpongle and Infected Mushroom. I absolutely love pink floyd but I'm simply unable to listen to them when I'm tripping, I get some really bad vibes and usually can't even finish a single song.

Check out some of their older albums, like Atom Heart Mother, Animals and Meddle.

I've tried to listen to both Animals and Meddle (Echoes is easily in my top 5 favorite songs) and they just make me really anxious and feel very dark. When I'm high, there's nothing better than some DSotM or The Wall, but tripping is an entirely different state of mind for me.
-
The Doors
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
The Rolling Stones
The Who
Cream
Jefferson Airplane
Pink Floyd
The Beatles
The Animals
Steppenwolf
Also some of the live stuff by these bands are even better then the studio recordings.
May be cliche, but the 60's/early 70's stuff is made to be listened to while tripping/high.

Nice list guys, I'm definitely going to check out the ones I don't already listen to.
No one here listen to Tool tho? I fucking love them, along with A Perfect Circle.
-
If I enter the way back when machine i have fond memories of some tunes off of UmmaGumma
1. Granchester Meadows
2. Several species of small furry animal gathered in a cave and grooving with a pict. :o
3. The narrow way.
The rest of the album i didn't care for and Animals was always a little too dark for me. It's among my top 5 all time though when sober.
"One of these days" off of Meddle is a great song as well.
But when it comes down to it I think Wish you were here offers the greatest bang for your tripping buck.

I definitely recommend everyone checking out Sigur Ros, especially the album Ágætis Byrjun. I appreciate Goa Trance and other psybient during the comeup, but while I'm peaking I get very bad vibes.

I'll keep it short - I could make a giant list, but then nobody would listen to any of them :)
I made sure not to repeat anything listed in this thread - there are great ones here!
- Birdy Nam Nam - s/t or Live in Paris
- Arms and Sleepers - Black Paris 86
- Eliot Lipp - "The Outside" or "Peace Love Weed 3D" - MUST HAVE SUB / BALANCED BASS!!
- Jon Hopkins - Insides
-
Flotation Toy Warning
CocoRosie
Prefuse 73
Zero 7
Flying Lotus
Animal Collective
The Pretty Things
Pink Floyd
Yeah, Pink Floyd felt like it was almost too obvious to put on, but hey, its true. I turn to them all the time. :D
But yeah, I'm really interested in checking out some of these bands I haven't heard of before.

I second Birdy Nam Nam! Discovered them a few years ago, they are incredible. Wish they would tour outside EU. Also: Beethoven. Check this bitch out.

alright seeing a lot of overlap on artists I already know. so here's my own list (with some prev. artists), with a bit of fun categorizing...these are some hymns that mused my mind
60s:
The Doors (Strange Days and The Doors are great)
Pink Floyd (obviously... DSoTM, Meddle, Atom Heart Mother, Animals... also listen to "Love Scene - Version 4")
Led Zeppelin
Jefferson Airplane (Surrealistic Pillows)
Jimi Hendrix (really almost anything you can get your hands on, you won't regret it)
The Mars Volta (well... not precise category, but still deserves to be here)
The Beatles (another given.. beware Revolution 9)
Comus (acid folk also happened guys...can get a bit "energetic")
The "Beats":
Bonobo (anything works)
Flying Lotus (beware Cosmogramma... July Heat and 1983 are nice ones)
Boards of Canada (some stuff beware... if you want a journey, listen to Disengage)
J Dilla (Donuts... sick production)
Onra (j dilla's vietnamese cousin)
Zero 7 (Simple Things)
Nujabes (Metaphorical Music)
DJ Krush (Jaku... only if ya dig Nujabes)
Amon Tobin (the drums can get intense)
The Avalanches (some of Since I Left You is nice)
Easy Star All-Stars (Dub Side of the Moon)
De Facto
Quantic
Getting jazzzzzier or funkier? (only sometimes when I trip):
Dave Brubeck (Time-out, of course)
Billie Holiday
Miles Davis
Kool & The Gang (Summer Madness is a great track)
John Coltrane (Interstellar Space... beware, a truly intense collection)
George Duke (Face the Music)
Jaco Pastorius ("Portrait of Tracy")
Nina Simone ("Ne Me Quitte Pas" is pleasant)
Classic:
Bach (Cello Suite no. 1 in G major)
Chopin ("Prelude In E Minor")
Erik Satie (his Gymnopedies)
Leo Brouwer (any of his solo guitar compositions... haven't heard much of his orchestra stuff)
James Tenney
Scriabin
listen to what you feel like and heed my insights
