Title: Trouble buying bitcoins
Post by: VTSeeker on June 05, 2012, 09:36 pm
Hey everyone,
First off, I just want to apologize if this question has been answered somewhere on the forums already. Though I think this issue is relatively new (the past few weeks or so).

So I'm new to the Silk Road and have a pretty specific purchase in mind, and I've never dealt with bitcoins before. I've got most of the process figured out, but currently I'm having issues getting my USD funds from Dwolla, and having them 'converted' to btc. When I go to MtGox to add my funds from Dwolla, I'm told that I need to send a photo id. I am also told that Dwolla requires I keep my funds in the Dwolla account for at least 30 days before sending it to a btc carrier such as MtGox. I tried using several different carriers and they all said more or less the same thing. I did some reading online and found that this is a pretty new precaution taken to prevent laundering and whatnot.
My question is what do I do? My money is still in a Dwolla account, but it seems I can't actually use it to buy bitcoins unless I send a photo id (which seems to defeat the entire purpose) and/or wait an additional month. I'm assuming there must be a way around this, as people are making purchases on the Silk Road with bitcoins everyday and obviously didn't send anyone their photo id.
Any help would be appreciated! Again, I'm new to this whole process, so if I haven't provided enough information or I am being unclear just let me know and I will try to clarify.
Thanks a lot!

VTSeeker, I may not have the entire answer, but here's my help on this. Don't send a photo id, for sure. Get your money out of Dwolla by registering a bank account, for which you don't have to give ID. Then, forget about using Dwolla any longer to get BTC. Instead,

1) use a bitcoin service such as get-bitcoin.com, where you just go to a bank and make a cash deposit into their account. The instructions are on their website so I won't post them here. Or you could use bitinstant also, but I think it turns out to be moer expensive, although it is faster.

2) once your BTC are in an online wallet (or in your own personal wallet on your computer), transfer them to a mixing service such as bitcoin fog http://fogcore5n3ov3tui.onion or bit laundry (which is much more expensive), then to your SR address.

You're done!

Thanks, I just transferred my money from Dwolla back to my bank account. When that goes through I'll do the cash deposit. I was worried this would be the case--I intentionally avoided trying to do the cash deposit method originally because I live in the middle of nowhere, about an hour drive from the nearest bank that will allow me to do it. Still, it's worth it--thanks again, I appreciate it!

Hey, glad I could hit the nail on the head and help out. I doesn't happen as often as I'd like!
