Title: PGP public key block on mac help
Post by: CarlTheFish on September 23, 2011, 10:22 pm
Hi I have a mac and I'm having great difficulty figuring out how to import public keys from the big public key blocks that everyone has at the bottom of they're listings. I've spent a few days on this, and unfortunately there just isn't that much help out there for us mac users. If there's anyone who could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm working on this too >>>_and I'm willing to donate to anyone who can help me_<<<. Here's how far I've gotten.

1. Install GPGTools (http://www.gpgtools.org/). Run the app and click new to create a key.

2. Open your web-browser and find and highlight a GPG Key.

3. In the menu bar click the app name [IE, Safari, Chrome]. Go to Services and click Service Preferences. Scroll down to the items that start with OpenGPG and check them all.

4. After closing that, keep the GPG Key highlighted and go to Services in the menu again, now you should see Open GPG: Import. Click that.

5. Now, highlight some editable text that you want to convert and again go to Services in the menu bar. Now click Open GPG: encrypt. You should now be able to select the key you imported.

I did all this but, but the recipient was not able to decrypt it. I also keep getting the error, "no usable private key found", despite having made a key.

Please help!

^ Those are pretty good steps

For number 1 look at these tutorials
http://www.robertsosinski.com/2008/02/18/working-with-pgp-and-mac-os-x/
http://g7pz322wcy6jnn4r.onion/opensource/II/gpgmacfield.html

After that basically copy and paste someones public key into textedit then right click, go to services, import key.

Then after you write the msg you want to encrypt in textedit, highlight it all then right click, go to services, encrypt key using the persons key you want to send the msg to.

I've just managed to figure it out myself, after 3x reinstalling the MacGPG2 Packages, HTH:

I. Install MacGPG2 (gpgtools.org/installer)

This will install (among other things):

GPG Keychain access (application)- This is where you create your own keys and drag & drop keys from others (more info here: https://github.com/GPGTools/GPGKeychainAccess/wiki/Getting-started )

GPG Services- The 'right click menu' for encrypting/decrypting selected text, importing PGP Keys (see link for screenshots: http://www.gpgtools.org/gpgservices/index.html )

 :o IMPORTANT:

***To turn on- go to System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Services -> Check every box with 'OpenPGP' in the description***

:-\  :-\ GPGToolsPreferences- in your system preferences- Go here to click the 'fix buttons' if stuff is not working right.

II. Setting up your end of the secret part:

Creating a secret+public key (a keypair)

This is your half (basically a password and a block of gibberish called a public key), you'll use it to make sweet love to another person's key, and they will have encrypted message babies when everything matches up.

****The Name, email, and comment that you type in the following steps can be viewed by anyone that imports your public key- vendors, scammers, and LEO alike- tie it to your SR persona, not your real life person.****

1. Open GPG Keychain Access

2. Click 'New' (or hit command+n)

3. Enter your SR username in the 'Full name' field

(*****Do NOT use your real name*****)

(*****Do NOT use your real name*****)

4. Enter an email address (this can be anything@anything.com, make it unique though):

good examples:

mySRusername@sr.com
myanonemail@safe-mail.net
mySRusername@silkroadonly.com

bad examples:

none@none.com (a vendor might have hundreds of keys saved, and something generic like that can be difficult to find)

myrealemail@gmail.com

5. Click the Advanced options triangle

Comment- leave blank (or not- keep in mind that anyone and everyone that imports your key can read it)

6. Length- 2048 RSA and RSA (Default) is fine, though you can bump it up to 4096- just don't lower it)

7. Expiration date- leave as-is (2 years).

8. Click 'Generate Key'

9. Spaz out with with the mouse a bit (to generate random key)

10. Create a passphrase (different from any other passwords that you use online that could be phi shed) and click OK

good passphrase example (44 characters, uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols, easy to remember):

ilovesmesomechronicinthemorning420NUGGETS$$$

not as good passphrase example (how the fuck will you remember this without writing it down? was that a lowercase l, or a one? was that a capital Oh or a zero?):

il0vem3SuMC4r0n1kIn743Mo4nlNg42OnUgG3tS$$$

11. Test it out by open a new TextEdit document, right (or control) clicking the white space, and selecting OpenPGP: Insert My Key

 ;D ;D ;D

III. Here's the most common scenario for using all this:

1. Buy a unicorn.

2. Go to seller's info page- uh oh, they only accept PGP encrypted comms.

3. Highlight, with your mouse, the entire Public key of the seller (from -----BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK----- to -----END PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----)

4. Right click on the highlighted key block of text and go to Services -> OpenPGP: Import Key (or drag and drop highlighted text onto GPG Keychain Access Window)

5. Open up TextEdit, go to Format -> Make Plain Text.

6. Type up your shipping details/ transaction number (keep in mind that sellers may get a ton of messages- don't make them have to hunt down what you ordered)

7. Right click the white space a the bottom of your message in TextEdit, and select Open PGP: Insert My Fingerprint, hit enter twoce, then right click and select OpenPGP: Insert My Key (so the seller can reply quickly if needed).

8. Press Command+A to select the entire TextEdit Document.

9. Right click and Select Services -> OpenPGP: Encrypt

10. You should get a pop-up asking you which key to encrypt to Choose recipients. (If not- you need to go to system preferences and click on the 'Fix' buttons)

11. Select the Unicorn Vendor's checkbox, select the private key you created at the bottom, and check 'Sign' and check 'Add to Recipients; Then OK

12. Your TextEdit window should flip over to a wall of gibberish beginning with -----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----

13. Press Command+A to select the entire PGP Message in the TextEdit Window, Copy and paste into Message field on Web site.

14. IMPORTANT- After pasting, go up to top, hit enter a few times, and right click -> OpenPGP: Insert My Key.

15. The message that you send to the Unicorn vendor should look something like this:

--(begin example message- this key does not work)----

Hi Unicorn Vendor, here is my public key, (and associated info) followed by my shipping details:

mySRusername | mySRusername@sr.com

Title: Re: PGP public key block on mac help
Post by: turen on November 21, 2011, 08:55 am
7Tjm-thanks, this was the only way I was able to get the PGP working on mac, after many attempts and reading a dozen different 'how to's'.  Every so often I have to go into system preferences and click the 'Fix' button; a good tip to keep in mind. Many thanks.

I have GPG Keychain access in Truecrypt, is this why I can't find the "Fix" button that seems to be such a problem solver? I looked in system preferences and all the preferences options in the involved applications. Where the hell is this thing?

many people forget that they have to create thier own secret key using a pass phrase first - then you can go into "Services" in systools (under Keyboard for some reason!!), and click the boxes to enable the right click menus in all Apps under their services menu.

Hightlight a pub key block and right click "import" to import, and encrypt using hightlight right click GPG encrypt to so on so  on.

Verify does not work so hot in the right click menu. Oh well. Also, when you encrypt, there is a drop down menu that at the bottom of the dialog to select your key to use as the profile. If you have more then one gpg private key, that is.

Also, when inputting the user profile data, dont use your real name and email. I almost did.

I've added a section on creating a Public Key to my earlier pseudo-tutorial- if anyone notices any steps I'm missing, please let me know- I want to make this as easy as possible since it took me the better part of an afternoon to get it figured out (when it should only have taken 20 minutes or so).

I am pretty good a encypt / decrypt, and keys, etc. I can sign, but I am having a dickens of a time verifying signatures using the right click menu - also, I cant find anything in the help docs on the difference between 'verify' and 'validate.'  any ideeas.
