EPIC Files FOIA Suit to Determine If Tor Is Compromised

EPIC has filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the Broadcasting Board of Governors, a federal agency that oversees all U.S. civilian international media. EPIC seeks information about the federal government's interest in the Tor network. Tor is a program designed to allow encrypted, anonymized online browsing and is used by many human rights organizations. Recent news reports indicate that the National Security Agency has targeted the communications of Tor users. In a related matter, EPIC has asked the Supreme Court to halt the NSA collection of domestic telephone records. For more information, see EPIC: EPIC v. BBG - Tor.

Maybe this could backfire on something like Silkroad. Presumably, the NSA is interested in having an unknown backdoor to Tor so they can know about, stop or perpetrate political and industrial espionage/terrorism/dissent. If your Russia or some "freedom fighter" somewhere, what better way to communicate your dodgy little secrets than using Tor as it's pre-built, out of country, well understood and has an active non-governmental community. If it gets out it's an NSA tool then the more interesting Tor participants will disappear leaving only headline worthy drug dealers, assassins and paedophiles to justify the probably insane NSA hardware budget.

I can just imagine the thought processes ... "oh shit - we spent 2 trillion dollars cracking that and now nobody in China or Russia uses it anymore." I know let's bust some black people who smoke crack, and a few paedophile rings like we did last time. Tell the president to stop buying all that MDPV off silk road and then call the DEA.
