I have an order in transit which should arrive soon, being the conscientious buyer that I am, I'm ready to slam down that finalise link as soon as the package arrives. This I cannot do as the finalise/resolve links on my order page are just plain text. Is this a bug in SR or have I done something stupid? Any help would be much appreciated as I don't like to keep a good vendor waiting!

No. In transit means the seller is packing it, the finalize button will become available once they have actually posted it. The seller controls this.

Weird, I'm in the same boat as the OP (an order showed up today and I can't finalize either b/c the button is unclickable). I always assumed the finalize option was tied to when the vendor put the order in transit but I guess not? I've been here awhile and this is the first time I'm running into this.
Is there nothing a buyer can do in this situation? The vendor seems like a good guy I don't want him to have to wait on the release of the coins if I can help it.

Read what I said. Unless the vendor is new (less than 15 transactions) then its up to them to turn the Finalize button on. If they haven't turned it on yet, then they obviously aren't that bothered about getting their money quickly.
In transit should really be called packing. The vendor doesn't turn finalize on until they have actually posted it.

It must be a new vendor, the finalise option is restricted for 3 days for new vendors.
When an order is put in transit the finalize option becomes available with established vendors, in transit should mean exactly that, packing is done before this when the order is processing.
We cannot enable the finalize button without putting the order in transit, this means some vendors mark in transit when it isn't so they can activate the finalize button.

New vendor indeed, thank you very much for clarifying that!

BE CAREFUL. You shouldn't finalize before you get the drugs for ANY vendor, and if you finalize early for a new vendor then you're crazy!!
