Title: Sassafras oil/Safrole
Post by: Qwame09 on October 28, 2012, 04:44 am
Looking for a vendor to sell sassafras oil (high safrole content) or safrole domestically (US) in small quantities (oz's).

Big demand for this in the US, you'd think someone could fill it.  I'm wondering if there's any MDMA production at all going on in the US, if so none of it makes it to SR at least.  The international vs. domestic price difference is nuts.  If someone could get a lab going in the US they could make a killing.

That is my hope here. I have all the necessary lab equipment (chemistry background), just need some sassafras.

You guys are in the U.S, why don't you harvest and distil it ?  I know it's a mess, and ridic low yields, but better than zero, if you can't get it.

If you are in florida, be resourceful, there is a treasure trove of the stuff from a local broadleaf'd shrub that grows there :)

If things get rolling, PM me, I am totally interested and may be able to offer some input, and of course would love to taste the results :)

Looks like the vendor Joy is selling Sassafras oil by the kg.  I've heard both bad and good thing about them... the price is not bad though.

ok there has got to be 100's of grannies and gardening moms out there farming this stuff, and throwing away lbs of safrole a year, tap that ( market, not the granny panty wearing moms  ;) and steam distill that 60-80% sass oil from this renewable , fast producing source... the "root beer"plant aka Hoja santa, or Mexican pepperleaf

http://flavorsofthesun.blogspot.com/2008/07/hoja-santa-root-beer-plant.html

could easily take a little sapling for free from some eager beaver gardener, and start your own garden, i'm going to assume its almost like a weed in some areas.. spread all over.

if you think you see it, just crush a leaf in your hand and smell for the licorice

This propagates like crazy, grows back bigger every year in colder climates ( someone say perennial ? ) , gorgeous to look at... i'm getting hard just thinking about it  :-[

you can guess every forest near my house is now going to be infected with this species

it's all right there in front of us, just collect, steam distil and sell on SR

That's funny!!

"The Sassafras that we label and sell is an artificial flavor. Our Sassafras Oil contains no safrole, and all ingredients are approved for food use by the FDA."

For what its worth, sassafras oil from clearnet vendors are almost always either synthetic, or treated in order to remove the safrole prior to sale(characterized by the clear colour of the liquid as opposed to the yellow crude oil)

so the link provided earlier for the sassafras oil was fake stuff?

Is this stuff hard to obtain for a fair price?

One can purchase pure yellow camphor oil pretty easily, and distill safrole from that. Most natural untreated camphor oils contain round 20% of the good stuff, which isn't very high, but considering you can order it by the kilo at reasonable cost it's not a bad idea.
