Title: it's the summer! a reminder to vendors
Post by: greenwood on May 29, 2012, 03:34 am
It's getting really hot in most parts of the united states. Just want to remind vendors to extra smell-proof your packages. Mail trucks, cargo holds and facilities get absolutely fucking ROASTING in this time and you don't want your packaged goods stinking up the place and alerting mail workers

thanks for all you guys do.

The cargo holds of airplanes, which fly above the cloudline and are bombarded by tonnes and tonnes more UV then the surface get INCREDIBLY hot during transit as well, just thought i'd add

Uh, grade 10 geography?  Wikipedia?  Common sense?

Jet's typically fly in the stratosphere (the second layer from the ground).
More then 3/4 of the atmosphere is in the troposphere (first layer), as well as all dust, particles and sustained weather patterns.
It's the atmospheric molecules (O2, N2, etc.) and particles that absorb UV radiation, that's why there's a big ass dome of O3 surrounding the planet higher up (the ozone layer) to stop those incredibly high energy UV 'ray's from penetrating.

So yeah I can't think of any simpler way then to say that airplanes fly in the stratosphere most often, that this layer has very little molecules (particles or gaseous atmosphere) to absorb or reflect UV radiation, so the intensity/energy of the UV energy penetrating the cargo hold is much more then the UB energy penetrating the troposphere where we live.

Well, doesn't that make sense from a logical point of view?  Being closer to the sun, there's less atmosphere to filter UV rays.

Isnt it cold as hell however many feet up the plane is?

This.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_temperature

Most jets have a cruising altitude of about 10km where the air temperature is somewhere between -20 and -50C. While true that the strength of UV light is stronger, the effective lack of the atmospheric gases which retain heat results in an overall net decrease in temperature.

However any package left in a plane standing for even a short period of time on a black asphalt runway will get very hot, very quickly, so the original point of the thread is still valid.

"Being closer to the sun, there's less atmosphere to filter UV rays."

What if we flew at night?
