Title: Going on clearnet websites with TOR?
Post by: thechefster on August 08, 2013, 04:49 pm
Okay , so I've read some stuff about this but I'm not completely sure...
IS it a security risk to go on regular websites with TOR? I've been going on google, and some other non-onion websites...

It is if you have scripts running. If you have no-scripts everywhere, your internet experience will be lackluster though. I only use it for stuff I don't want getting connected to me. things like drug discussions. Of course though, the safety is only as safe as the end nodes.

You can but I believe the general thought is never log in anywhere that can be traced to your real identity like gmail, facebook, stuff like that.

It's fine as long as you have the scripts disabled, I use Tor all the time to browse sites like reddit and other news sites.

When you browse sites through Tor the guvment don't know what you are looking at so they can't build a profile on you.

Most sites you visit with tor will still place a cookie.  whether it's harmless or not depends on the site (either they're tracking cookies of just site use cookies) I suppose and in the tor browser the do not track feature (which is only useful against organisations that honour it) is turned off by default.

I'd say don't do it but that's just me.

Clearnet site I go to all the time: http://www.ip-adress.com/what_is_my_ip/  only one I've found that will immediately geolocate your ip.  Great to make sure your exit node is in or not in a certain country.
