Title: Hitchiker's Guide To The SR-Galaxy?
Post by: 33rpmrecord on January 03, 2012, 06:02 am
First an introduction before the actual question comes in (feel free to skip to the actual purpose of this post.)

I first heard about SR back in summertime from the now infamous Gawker article. It caught my attention instantly because of it's premise, an almost completely secure and anonymous way to buy certain substances over the internet. At first I shrugged it off as a passing thing that would be broken down in due time by world governments or hackers trying to fuck with a good thing and because I didn't have a clue where to begin in order to access the SR ( sour grapes ya know). After doing enough research and putting enough effort into understanding how all of this works, I was finally able to: 1) Access SR and 2) Develop my own public key. I've come this far but I do remain a bit confused on some things, such as how communication and sending messages works out in regards to the public keys and encryption, the best ways one can go about acquiring BitCoins and utilizing them to purchase whatever one may want to buy off of here. Any help would be welcome and greatly appreciated.

how communication and sending messages works out in regards to the public keys and encryption
It's really pretty simple. If you want to send somebody a message which you don't want anyone else to read (either because it contain private data or discussion of illegal activities, for example), you encrypt the message with that person's public key. That way, only they will be able to read it (by decrypting it with their own private key, which nobody else can access). You should include your own public key in the message (before encrypting it!) so that they can reply in a way that only you may read their message, too.

If you want your message's recipient to be absolutely positive that you're the person who sent the message, and they already have your public key, you can sign the message with your private key. That way, they can use your public key to verify that it was in fact you who sent it. Signing a message does not encrypt it, though. You need the recipient's public key for that.

the best ways one can go about acquiring BitCoins and utilizing them to purchase whatever one may want to buy off of here.
That depends on a lot of things. Where are you, do you prefer anonymity over speed or security, et cetera. You can use legitimate services like MtGox and Virwox to acquire the bitcoins and find some way to launder them, you can buy them with cash from some vendors for total anonymity (but that usually requires sending cash via mail, which is not without its risks) or you can buy bitcoins from vendors right here on the Silk Road. Sugar Mama is one such vendor. She sells bitcoins for moneypaks.

There's a lot of good ways to get bitcoins, in the end it comes down to your own priorities and personal preference.

Hope I was helpful! :)

Horizons is kick ass. Always helping people and posting great answers to newbs questions. Thanks for helping the community Horizons.

Asbury, I have noticed that your answers to questions are consistently unhelpful and at times even detrimental. Basically the opposite of Horizons.
