Title: How do you use PGP??
Post by: etsubucs31 on April 08, 2012, 06:32 pm
Thanks in advance for any help. I am new to SR. I haven't made any purchases yet, still waiting to get my bitcoins, but while browsing through some items I noticed some vendors require PGP. How do you use this program?

Awesome! Thanks, that tutorial was great! So let me make sure I have this clear. If I want to send somebody a message....

1. Copy their PGP Key into notepad and save.
2. Import their key
3. Type out your message in clipboard
4. Click encrypt, then click on the user you want to send it to.
5. Copy the big block of text that come up and paste in the message you want to send.

Is that right?

I wish all tutorials were written like that --^ I've been reading for so long, yet the only ones I've understood are the ones which are explained like you have etsubucs.

That does make a lot of sense.

Duffman, not sure if you happened to look at my thread "Linux users, let's do this", but I had trouble being able to just right click and encrypt. After hours of googling I had to face the fact that it wasn't gonna happen. I even downloaded truecrypt hoping I could somehow use it lol. I have never seriously messed with encryption, so I didn't know anything basically. Anyway, I read somewhere on one site this guy said that having a gui for your encryption software was too advanced for newbies and they should use the command line anyway. I thought that was pretty fucked and stupid. By the time I finally decided to try it on the command line I couldn't believe how fucking easy it was. He was right, the gui's with all their buttons to do this and that complicates the hell out of a fairly simple procedure. I have always avoided encryption since it intimidated me, but now, I feel stupid for never just trying it that way from the start.

I'm not suggesting you do it on the command line or anything. You just made me think of that guy's comment and how after I did it once I was like 'Oh, okay' lol. You're right about how quickly it becomes easy and not at all confusing was my point :)

Hi all, been lurking for awhile but decided to finally jump into things.

Rather than making yet another "am i doing it right" thread, I figured I would piggyback onto this one.

I believe I have pgp set up correctly but would like to send and receive test messages before I make an ass out of myself with a seller. I would appreciate someone taking the time to help me out.

Thank you.

I am using kgpg.

I imported your public key, worked fine.

wrote a short message and clicked 'encrypt'

selected your public key to encrypt the message with

Copy-pasted output.

I decrypted your message with no issue. Could my version of gnupg be causing problems with encryption on my end?

One more try, in case I misclicked something the first time:

PortablePGP is probably the easiest for anyone wondering + it's portable so can be put in encrypted container on memory stick for more protection.
