It is safe to browse clearnet and Tor at the same time as long as you are not browsing the same site at the same time (on the same computer). The main danger with doing this is user error -- making a mistake and forgetting which is which.

I THINK Its actually a good idea to first use the clearnet to look up a load of harmless junk, which logs on the ISPs system. I do this just before i use Tor, then afterwards too.

this makes it look like you were browsing online, then all of a sudden an encrypted port opens, data moves along, then stops again.
almost as if you're running BitTorrent using encryption, or software auto-update is going on. etc
depends who's looking at the ISP's detailed log of your internet traffic and what they know about you.

I try to look up as varied a range as possible, so that I can state that it's a shared wifi connection.

Stumbleupon is a great plugin if you get stuck on what shit to click on. just tick your interests and sit there clicking a button 5-10 times (beware, its addictive)
^This, & a tool that clicks the mouse for you automatically at set intervals would be great to stuff your ISP log with dummy sites
