Never seen this discussed

The general consensus is don't do it.
This is what I've read too but never have seen the reasons not to spelled out.

... the consensus is there are two "popular" Tor options.
Covert Browser - which does NOT seem to work on the main SR site, but does work for the forums
and
OnionBrowser - which does appear to work for both SR and the forums.
The questions becomes do you trust Apple? Do you trust the app developer. Most of us say "NO".
-
...and to top that off do you really trust your phone?
Most phone OS'es have more security vulnerabilities than desktop OS'es just due to the fact that manufacturers don't push updates very often (Apple does more often than any other). That said your data (cache / cookies / saved passwords / etc. ) are not stored securely on most phones. Apple may have encryption but Apple will hand over the Decryption key with a warrant.
There are ways to make phone's more secure, but they require a lot of time and skill. Check out the Guardian Project for great tools on making Android phones more secure for users: https://guardianproject.info/
