Title: Is using a card reader for online banking safe?

I have just received one of them and was reading up on the manual and it concerned me how the code needed to authorise a payment is sent from NWOLB to the card reader or vise versa.

I have tried to understand how it would work, Natwest say it works independently of your computer but does anyone else have a better understanding?

2nd question : considering my bank know all my details would it be unwise to use TOR with my online banking, just so I don't raise suspicion? I am going to tumble the coins from where I buy them for a few days as well as possibly using instawallets before going to SR (this part all within TOR ofcourse)
