A non-vendor sent me an informal pre-order deposit to my account. I was unable to deliver the product, and there is no listing for me to cancel. I sent the customer a message for a public-key address to return the money, and that message has since been read, but I haven't heard back. I don't want the money loitering in my account indefinitely. Is there a way I can just return the BC to the customer's account without an address?

you can send money on site by going into your account and typing their user name (main site name) and sending..look on account page and the last option to fill out is sending person to person..you can find out their user name by checking your account history

You can send the coins to the customers username. Just click 'Account' and you will see the option to send to a username below the option to send to a bitcoin address. ;)
