So please forgive my attempt at articulating this...
I think there needs to be some form of communication (yeah twitter was a good idea but I don't see it being utilised to inform us of server maintanence, offline, etc.) that isn't so ad hoc to be able to simply distinguish between the server being online or under denial of service attack or TOR just slow/under attack.
At the rate TOR is going, I don't see it being very sustainable in the future. We need better incentives to run relays as, although I've noticed an increase in number, unfortunately this is mostly low speed ~1kB/s bandwidth relays.
I just have to ask... (yes I'm ignorant of how TOR actually works) Is it possible for a relay to manipulate the path of the tor circuit?
I've noticed a couple of suspect connections along with the increase in failed connections lately. Should this be of concern in regards to security?
