Title: Please help!!! Really confusing problems with Tor and accessing SR :-(
Post by: boxman80 on September 12, 2012, 06:32 am
Let me ask u.... And hopefully someone can help because I am at a total loss here.  U may know as I am decent with computers, but not the best with these different anonymous browsers and all especially "Tor", but my bitch ex girlfriend gave my computer a virus and fucked it all up, so I had to factory reset. Anyway, ever since doing this, I have downloaded the onion package or the "Vidalia" browser bundle at least 4 times, only after uninstalling the previous downloaded one because when I open up Tor, and I put the SR address in, the browser tells me "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at silkroadvb5piz3r.onion" I have checked my firewall settings and nothing is different than before my computer got all fucked up. I don't get this shit at all! I never had this problem even once before and it used to work awesome. Now I have to use the iPad and the browser on here isn't that great because it fucking freezes every now and then. Can anyone pleeeeeaaaase help? I miss the convenience of using the laptop, but haven't been able to do so for going on about a month.  I mean I don't know what the hell to do and it is even tough to search on chrome to find answers. Like I said, I am decent with using Windows, but when it comes down to all sorts of technical stuff, I get lost because I don't understand it. Yes I admit I am ignorant, but I guess this is a learning experience. It's driving me up the wall.  Let me know if u have any ides because I'm totally stuck. Thanks all :-\

I take it you can't access any TOR sites then? What does the vidalia message log say, maybe you'll get  a  hint there why you are not connection to the TOR network with your PC. You can also try using viadlia and something like 'proxy switchy sharp' extension in chrome in case there is some weird firefox plug-in that is causing the issue. Also, isn't the TOR bundle portable so you shouldn't have to be installing / uninstalling things, just delete the directory. Do a clean install and make sure you aren't adding any plug-in's or have any other software running in the background that may be hikacking your internet connection via another proxy, like openvpn or some of those porn blocker type things. Maybe the virus is still there and hijacking your connection.

Go through the vidalia settings, make sure you are getting a clean install, make all optional stuff blank, paths to configs, etc. so you are getting as clean an install as possible.

Have you tried booting into safe mode and running up the TOR browser? Run 'hijack this' to see if there are any weird processes running. I find malware bytes the best virus removal, maybe worth downloading that and letting it have a run through too. Run up msconfig too, see if there are any weird programs being ran at start-up.

You could try downloading a linux live CD too, see if you can get to the site that way.

If you are just having trouble connecting to SR, then check out the link in my signature. If you are having trouble connecting to anything, and you feel it was due to a virus, get linux. You will thank yourself later ;)  xoxo sickgirl
