I wish there weren't shady vendors, the community is finding more and more of them.

it's really easy and cheap to install tails on a usb by yourself using one of the many guides available online! no need to risk getting spyware n shit

there are some shady vendors, and some shady buyers.

imo there are more sound ones of each though fortunately

Vendors that don't ask for an early finalization don't ever seem shady to me.

Semi related to this topic, I have seen vendors offering USB sticks with Tails pre-installed - you would have to put some trust into those vendors to make sure they have not pre-installed something nasty on there as well. To the OP: If you are buying a USB drive from the shops and then installing a copy of Tails I would not worry about it. If there is something nasty from the manufacturer on the USB drive chances are it would have been found out by now. If you are paranoid purchase a hub (not switch, you need to capture traffic from other ports) and plug another PC into that to capture all traffic (ie. don't capture it on the host that is potentially compromised). Some switches can also do the same "feature", look for span port or mirror port. You can review everything in/out from a network perspective (leave it plugged in for a few days, idle, with the operating system running after using it for a period of time to be sure). No good capturing data if you can't get it out.
