Title: $1000.00usd worth of BTCs stolen from account within minutes of deposit. help
Post by: DudeRugs on January 09, 2012, 11:44 am
Hi guys, I have problem that happened last night. I bought $1000.00usd worth of BitCoins from a very reputable BitCoin seller and about an hour after the coins were added to my account I went to purchase something and the Coins had been wiped clean from my account. I quickly checked the transaction history and someone by the name of "doug00100" had setup a custom listing for 127.99 bitcoins(which just so happened to be the exact balance of my account) and then the hackers somehow went through with the transaction without my consent. And as soon as I discovered the horrible news I was locked out of my own account, probably due to them changing the password on me. This was the first time I have tried to buy or really use my SR account even though I have been here for months. I have been bombarding SR Support with messages from my other account with no reply yet. I also just created a new account and sent them a message since I heard that can help expedite the response time. Anyways, just wanted to get that out there and see if anyone else has dealt with similar situations and if there is anything SR will do to try and retrieve my stolen property. I am extremely disappointed here, not only was that a lot of $ to lose but the fact that I did everything the way you are expected to  and still had my account scammed was beyond upsetting. I feel sick just thinking about it and I can't even get anyone to talk to me about what happened. That's what I get for feeling like this was a "community" though right? That was everything I had  :-[

Oh man Mitanox... I was about to purchase something you had listed! The irony almost kills me... if I can figure out my PGP I will send it to you as soon as humanly possible. I appreciate it, I really do. Now if only I could get SR support to reply like that. Thanks friend!

DudeRugs: That sucks! Sorry to hear about your account being hacked. That really put a bummer on the community when bad news like this strikes. I wonder how they got you b/c you say you were careful. And so quickly! Damn those black hat geeky bastards!! Is no one safe?

Mitanox: Great gesture! Very kind of you. And it makes you look like a superstar. Win/win. For you (w/repeat and new business) and for our community. Thanks for being a real stand up vendor. Great job.
And my account was uh..... hacked? YEAH, that's the ticket. I was hacked! Sure I was. Can I pgp you an address for some freebies to ease my pain, too? Hahaha! J/K  ;)

SR support won't be able to do anything in regards to getting your money back.

There have been several instances of this happening recently, maybe there should be both a pin for withdrawals and for purchases

Hey paperchasing, I completely agree with you. I don't even know what the guy has in store for me but I already had much respect for the dude. I am realizing just what a community this place really is, even despite the piece of shit bottom-sucking scum fuckers.. lol. Anyways, I tracked the breach in security back to when I first made the account and started browsing the hidden wiki. I made a few logins for various sites but after so many I used the username and password of my SR account twice because I was having trouble remembering all of the different names. That had to have been when they got access. My fault for not regularly changing my password. Hard lesson learned, but life goes on and we adapt. Thanks everyone for at least talking to me.. it is already WAY more than the SR "Support"( lol ) has done. Does that even go to an actual person?

^^^That's a good idea.

On another note, I saw another thread where an account was compromised. They logged in via some gateway using their iPhone. Personally I wouldn't trust any app on my phone to be safe not even the android tor app.

Hello,
Mitanox Cheers to you for the great gesture. I wanted to add my 2cents for DudeRugs please give the SR staff a bit of time to reply to you. They have a lot of priorities and yours is one of them no need to worry. It is not the type of support where you will get an answer within minutes but you will get to communicate back and fourth in due time. Please have some patience and remember the majority of us are on your side we hate scumbags too!

Sorry to hear of your loss, DR.  There's no two eays about it; it sucks rocks.  But at least you were able to figure out where things went wrong.

*Anyone* who's about to transfer in an amount greater than they can afford to lose should set a new password -- and then test it! -- *before* doing so.  (Or at least consider purchasing in smaller increments.)  The hassle of remembering a new password has got to be less painful than what just happened to DR.

Anyone else notice the extra space between "expected to" and "and still had" near the end?

He's probably a scammer, namely KingJoey who still doesn't know when to use "to" and "too" apparently. Nice try though.

Don't send him ANYTHING is my opinion, otherwise the scam worked.

Fucken hell imagine humanity if money was a non issue.

a) he is trying to get ppl to send him donations..kinda like a gypsy

b) he should not be helpd because really dealing BTC for cash on SR is stupidity at its finest.

c) Can't get any atm? Patience.

Definitely gets marks for the easiest scam I've seen in about 24 hours. Surprised the guy doesn't post this type of message EVERY day if within an hour someone offers to send free products...

There's a reason scammers stay here - the scams keep WORKING.

Dear PumpkinYeti & demsone,

I really hope that whatever scam you two obviously fell for at one point in time wasn't nearly as bad as what I got taken for. On another note though, I haven't asked for anything! How am I supposed to feel and what am I really supposed to do when I just discover that the $1000 worth of coins that I thought was "safe" in my account(long enough to purchase what I put the coin in there for anyways) just disappears?? Because I spent plenty of time trying to get a hold of the SR Support and it wasn't until this afternoon that they finally told me they were going to refer me to someone(whatever that means). And BTCpal(a great guy btw) was the one I purchased from and he was at least there to listen after the whole thing happened. I didn't want to keep bothering him though so I came here with two thoughts in mind; 1)Maybe someone could at least let me know whether I am shit out of luck or not because it was getting late and I don't think I would have gotten much sleep had I been up wondering all night long.. and thanks to all of you who DID actually have something insightful to say. 2)I didn't think it would hurt anybody to post precisely what happened to me so that others could simply be aware of it, if only as a steep reminder of why its a good idea to change your password and to be anal about doing so.

I am sorry you two are so jaded by scammers, luckily the entire community isn't as bitter as the two of you are. In fact, had the rest of the people been as cynical toward my in my time of frustration and confusion I would have likely just turned my back on this place for good. Instead I decided to spend the entire day setting up my sellers account and listing everything that was in my means today. So much for your scammer theory... unless I guess I am one of those really stupid scammers that pulls the scam and then sticks around and does his best to provide a service for the same community that caused me to be robbed $1000.

And seriously, how tight is that tinfoil hat that just because there was one spot in the message that had a double  space made you think I was trying to scam people.. oh yeah, I forgot about the to too thing... fuck I have totally been busted! HAHA if you guys aren't trolls then I feel bad for you because it must be difficult living your day to day being that paranoid of anything that speaks or moves. lol

What items do you have listed and how did you afford them if the $1000 scammed from you was your last bit of cash for your heat and bills? Not accusing you of anything, just curious.

THIS IS SR.

Time to obliterate this thread------

Wow, what a nice response.

I am curious myself, how this theft took place?

If there's something we're missing, shouldn't we be let known?

When I made my account(3 months prior) I am pretty sure that I may have setup up an account on a different site with the same name and password(I had been creating new ones for each site but it gets difficult remembering them all). I was most likely phished, thats the only plausible thing I can think of. And the main problem was that the items I have/had listed on my sellers account were purchased pre-theft, so its not like I could just walk down to the utility company with a handful of pills and give it to them as payment. I agree this thread should die at this point. I only made it to ask for help(as in ADVICE, not money) and I was able to get all of the answers I needed much faster than it took SR Support to provide them to me. Basically, I knew that if too much time passed that there would be nothing SR could do to get the funds back and I was trying to find a way that I could get them to contact me faster. It took them days to reply that there was nothing they could do since the funds had already left the site. I have learned my lesson, I am recouping my losses, and have made some internet friends through the ordeal. I just didn't realize that so many people in the "community" would be so unwelcoming and I apologize(not to them specifically though) if I came off too strongly in my replies, I was upset already and then accused of being a pan-handler/scammer. I love this place and am having a great time contributing and working with everyone here. So thanks everyone for all the help, looking forward to our future interactions(hopefully positive)!

Am i missing something?

Why does a gap between words being a bit longer than it should be mean he is a scammer?  :o

Easiest way to silence the cynics- just look up the theft in the block chain explorer and post it here. It's a shame people are jaded but there are some shitty people who would gladly undermine community trust in order to get a freebie...

I don't understand.

The *very first* purchase you make on SR is $1000 worth of BTC from a BTC vendor? You realize you're paying up to 20% more than you should for those BTC right? (That's $167 lost right there.) And isn't there a $500 limit on Moneypaks? Or did you walk into Walgreens and spend $1000 for one?

Don't let bitcoins sit in your SR account for an hour.

And there's no reason to follow any links to SR at the hidden wiki. Even if you entered your username/password into a phishing site linked at the hidden wiki, doesn't SR now require a PIN as well?

As for remembering passwords, google a program called KeePass.

Posting a link to blockexplorer.com might provide some more information, but you could have just sent it to another address yourself.

As with all stories of stolen BTC, none of them can be fully trusted. There's really no way to know if you're a scammer or not. If you were actually scammed, I hope I've helped and look at the following page:
http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/wiki/index.php/Scammed

If you're a scammer, fuck off.

I do not believe he was scammed... that my own opinion and who am i anyways... however there is some sort of crap ass hack where replying to a message will give the sender all they would need to take over your account. IE: free microsoft points on xbox live message... message it back and a bot will use your account to start sending it to your friends... everyday on yahoo messenger my sister gets on and say hey what up... after i responded it was some fucking person asking if id heard about free ipods being given away in the name of some guy...
When i first set up a forum account someone by the name lizard asked me to tell em why im here for some study they are doing... i wont reply, delete or even run my cursor over any of it cause that crazy shit...
if you signed up for free drugs, ipod, laptop, ect... im sorry but its never real... never... and if you see a post by me saying anything of the sort... means i got got... lol its so hard to say no when the flashy banner pops up and says "congratulations, you've won!!!"                     be smart... the only people getting free shit is the scammers here  that get pitty...
