I propose that it would be good if feedback left for 0.00BTC items did not contribute to a sellers ranking and that when displayed in feedback listings a different font face is used, such as italic or highlighting to make clear that these feedbacks could be questionable.
This would help to prevent feedback scams and payment outside of escrow as a sellers ranking would only be based upon successful transactions where some money has changed hands inside the silkroad. This can only increase trust in the sellers ranking.
This would of course have an impact on people with legitimate 0.00 BTC listings, but these are small in number. After all, if people want to have 0.00BTC listings why cant they sell on forums as there is no need for SR and its escrow.
It might even be desirable to increase this bound to $1 or some other trivial amount, so all transactions less than a $1 do not contribute to a sellers ranking.

P.S. it would be good if the item link in a feedback listing went to the version of the listing that was in-use when the order was placed (such as ebay does) and not the current version, or more likely "item not currently listed page" that really is not helpful for prospect buyers as it makes it hard for a buyer to know if it was a valid listing.

Well, the problem here is that there are a lot of legitimate reasons why sellers should get feedback on these listings to contribute to their rank. A *big* example of this is with the folks that trade bitcoins for moneypak/etc but also the newer folks that give out free or really cheap samples to people need that feedback to help build trust with buyers.

I agree this is a valid point, but if you read carefully these users would still get feedback left, just not a number next to their name. A quick search on the forums would show up one of these as a good vender (if they indeed were).
In the case of bitcoin traders, perhaps this seems a bit unfair. Moreover, these venders are essentially using SR as an advertising platform without paying for the privilege (albeit an initial $150). Possibly it would make more sense for SR to consider opening up for external "shops" who pay a subscription and get their items listed alongside the SR's listings. These external "shops" would have much finer grained control over the order process; and have responsibility to manage payment themselves.
Of-course, security is a big issue here. Either way, I feel that feedback for a substantial transaction is worth more than feedback for a 0.00BTC transaction and it would be nice to be-able to clearly see the worth of a feedback entry.

im pretty sure i have heard sr say that the feedback ratings are weighted. and it looks like things like date, amount, etc.. are taken into that weight.
yes 0btc will affect feedback, but its necessary and wont change, and when you look at a buyers feedback if you mouse over the item it will show you what it was for (it wont tell price though) so if you see only feedback for free items then maybe take note

0.00 BTC shouldn't effect feedback, I agree with OP.

+1. Feedback weightings should really be proportional to the price of listings. I heard a long time ago that it was supposed to be weighted but I don't know what kind of formula is used. There are sellers in the top 10 with nothing but 0.00 transactions meanwhile I'm languishing at #35 with over $1500 a day in sales.

Yea, this is somewhat of a conundrum. For the issue of samples, I'd say that they shouldn't be free samples, but rather relatively inexpensive samples. Once that is in place, I can see no reason for there to be ratings given for free items. Items shouldn't even be allowed to be listed for free, imo. If it's free, it should be in a forum (ie downloads, etc).
