Title: How save is Lubuntu on VMware?
Post by: pepomaze66 on June 25, 2013, 09:57 am
As the topic states - I've followed a tutorial on "keeping safe" a while ago and I ended up installing an encrypted Lubuntu on a virtual machine in VMware.

Anyone know how safe is this? are the files and browsing data accessible through the outside (outside of vmware) ?

Thanks in advance!

I assume you mean the disk image is encrypted? or you performed FDE on the install of lubuntu? In either case I guess it would depend on where the encryption keys are stored between times. That isn't something I know, especially in regard to the storing of such keys in terms of a VM. The bootloader can't be encrypted but that isnt a security issue for normal FDE so perhaps not an issue here either? Out of my depth Im afraid.

The files on the VM certainly aren't viewable when the machine is off though the host could potentially monitor the VM activity when its running. Wouldn't hurt to turn off the swap space access when using it, I'm not sure what/how the swap is used by VMs but it can't hurt.

Thanks for the reply.
not the disk image itself, but the operating system when running the image through VMware. I have to put my password at the boot time of ubuntu and then again when the operating system comes up.
