Title: Why we NEED a new SR and new DPR
Post by: pathenry76 on October 04, 2013, 11:01 pm
It must be remembered that we are all part of something much bigger than a website to score drugs. We could all migrate to BMR or Sheep and make money and get high but it would only be a matter of time before they are shut down as well or our movement moves into obscurity and eventual death.

The world is watching and the world thinks the agents of oppression have won. But our community is more than just one site and more than just one man. The title DPR itself was created with the intent that it would be held by more than one man or no man at all. It is a myth, a phantom. We NEED to keep that myth alive. We NEED an identical site run by another Dread Pirate Roberts. We need to show the world that we are not vanquished. We need to show them that we can never be vanquished. If the oppressors take down The Silk Road, another Silk Road must rise in its place. If the agents of tyranny capture the Dread Pirate Roberts, another DPR must take the helm and steer us into new waters. Let us show the world that we can never be defeated.

Let us not give up the fight.

I only wish I had the knowledge and ability required. I am but a simple moonshiner. I promise that I will always be prepared to tend the rum casks in the hold.

Ultimately anyone who decides they have the courage and ability to take the helm MUST shed their former persona with a clean break before taking the mantle of DPR.

With the amount of money this site generated, it baffles me why it was anywhere within the reach of the feds.

While Somalia would be a fitting place for a dreaded pirate, I'm not so sure the internet connection is all that great there.

i just mentioned on another forum where they are discussing a new silk road 2.0 already. i'm surprised with the money he would have had, that dpr wasn't operating from an osamaesque style walled compound in the hills of pakistan.

He had enough money to go wherever he wanted so I doubt he would sacrifice his quality of life just to be unfound. Somewhere in Europe would have sufficed or even Russia. I just don't think throwing a turban on his head and pretending to be a camel jockey is the answer.

Equally important to any reincarnation of the Dread Pirate and Silk Road is the continued commitment of the site, the pirate, and the community to the values that made us unique. It is our dedication to peace and free markets, to societal improvement through mutually beneficial trade, to a rejection that anyone has the right to coerce others or demand tribute without consent, that gives us the moral high ground and separates us from common thugs (governmental or street). Any DPR or SR that is not committed to these ideals may as well not start at all for they would only do harm to our community and our movement.

In an interesting post-mortem release by the creators of the defunct anonymous marketplace Atlantis there is information that the former admins and users of the Silk Road are planning to resurrect the service. User RR writes: “We have SilkRoad v2.0 ready to launch and is now in its final testing stages. Our site has all the features of the original one and we have kept the same style of forum for your ease.”

The new SilkRoad will be sending out anonymous invites to former vendors and then open to the Tor-using public soon after.

The representatives of Atlantis write:
From a quick scout around I’ve counted at least 5 publicly stated projects with the said aim of replacing becoming “Silk Road 2.0? and many many more gathering info and building alliances.
And this is what Law Enforcement is now parading as a victory? Over two years of investigation, millions of dollars spent and for what so a couple of armchair programmers can build it again in a few days while in the meantime vendors simply move to other site’s .

Users are already planning ways to keep the new site secure. This includes the creation of something called BitWasp, an “open source, anonymous bitcoin marketplace specifically built for use in conjunction with Tor or I2P via the hidden services such as .onion websites and eepsites.”

What does this mean for law enforcement and fans of the original Silk Road? First SR won’t be dead for long and I suspect that hackers, now emboldened, will produce many more SR-like sites than any government can police. While the last mile problem of shipping products to and from vendors and clients can still be controlled by customs and postal authorities, I doubt it will be as easy to take down these variegated new services.

“What’s striking to me as an outside observer is there seems to be no shortage of well educated American males in their late 20's (Manning/Snowden and now Ulbricht) willing to sacrifice bright futures and their own personal liberty to highlight the draconian laws and downright totalitarianism being inflicted by their government on the populous,” writes the Atlantis representative. “History will show it’s the will of the people that’ll win in the end and not that of the dictators in power and I thanks to the actions of DPR and others like him I believe I am now witnessing a full revolution in progress and I for one will be sticking around to document it.”

Whomever decides to step up and undertake such a task must be very intelligent and very, very cautious. Someone who has the right technical knowledge with computers, networks, programming, and hacking. Maybe even a military background. Ideally this person would have a solid cover life, maybe a spouse and kids, work a regular 'dayjob,' or own a small business. This person must have impeccable operational security and must make sure they are beyond careful. The good news is the genie has been let out of the bottle and there's no putting it back in, so whoever takes over won't have to worry about spreading the word like DPR did (which came back to bite him), the community infastructure is already here. So all that needs is the right person who knows what they are doing. Also this person can learn ALOT from Silk Road and the mistakes that were made, so as to improve security and minimize risk. Always use encryption, never use any email or username that can be linked to you, always use TOR, find a good country with good internet infastructure, preferably with no extradition treaty with the US, and never try to pay to have anyone silenced. Have a good escape plan, where if security or your identity are compromised, you get out and destroy the evidence and go into stealth mode if necessary, make the keys and instructions available as a last resort so if you have to abandon ship, the torch can be passed and the mission continued by someone else.

This is a perfect illustration of the fact that market forces beat government forces everytime. If enough people want something, no amount of jackbooted thugs can stop them.
