Title: PGP for Mac . . . Seems to be to high of a learning curve!
Post by: NorCalKing on May 10, 2012, 04:47 am
I have a Mac PBP with OS 10.6.8 and aside from the fact that I'm not a real geek head / nerd type, and a lot of this software isn't massaged for macs, but I'm having issues with PGP, (understanding and otherwise) and couldn't get Tormail to work either!  So if there are those who understand the mac platform with 10.6.8, hit me up.
Thanks!

On the clearwebs go to
https://ppgp.sourceforge.net and download PortablePGP-1.0.6.zip then go to
http://www.instantcrypt.com/InstantCrypt_CompatiblePrograms_LinuxApple.php and download start_portablepgp_osx.zip, the instructions should be on that site as well, step by step and it's in one of the zips as well that you downloaded. Really easy pgp that I use.

1.) Goto GPGtools.org
2.) Download and install
4.) Create your new key pair
4.) Save your friends pubic key in your key ring by pasting into TextEdit and saving as a Unicode UTF-8
5.) Click import to save it on your keyring
6.) Type message into Text Edit
7.) Right click, click Services>Encrypt.
8.) Select your friends name/public key
9.) Message will be scrambled in TextEdit box.
10.) Cut and paste into SR message box.

Simple.  You get used to it very very quickly and it takes seconds.

What Chopperos said.

I'd highly reccommend running parallells with either ubuntu or windows installed and use your PGP from there.

Mac OSX is not intended for people who understand why computers work. It was intended for fairly wealthy people to click to do something rather than type a command.

Hi there friends,
One thing I would add to using the Mac and text edit, you 1) write your message in text edit and then HIGHLIGHT it and then go under text edit> services and encrypt. It sounds silly but that one stupid step had me jammed up....highlighting the stupid message in text edit.

I'd disagree with that statement as X is very much a full fledged $NIX environment with all the very powerful command line tools available in any BSD user land.   you just didn't open an x-term. X is additionally blessed with one of the most robust desktop interfaces there is. Except the iTunes part :-p.

X Not geared for the wealthy, just those who want a more  efficient OS. hell the software is cheaper than Windoze

GPGTools was easier to set up and use than PGP on windows.

This is what I am doing, but I have hit a wall! maybe somebody can help. When I get to step 7,  I click on services>encrypt, but the name of the recipient doesnt show up in the box! Its just not there to choose. When I go to the GPG program the name is in the list, but not when I am trying to encrypt through text edit. Any ideas?

I think the step you are missing is when you highlight the public key, hit text edit and save, put it on your desktop and then import it to your key ring. Let me know if it still doesn't work. It took me awhile and you just have to kind of play around with the order of commands and such.

Maybe I'm just a thick fucker then. Although I'm a 'Microsoft Certified Professional' I find myself using a Mac as I'm a graphic designer by trade.

I personally find Mac for "dummies" (no rudeness intended) although it's great for your day to day operations. Microsoft is for the mass market. What business would you find not running Windows? Apart from a design and print agency obviously.

I don't understand what a 'key' is.......actually I don't understand any of it.  :-[

All I want to do, is get a bitcoin address, so I can order some goodies without my brain exploding.

Do I need any of this shit?

Can we please not turn this thread into a Mac vs PC thread?

Yes, I'm dumb and I don't give a shit about code or how computers work. So sue me. I just want shit to be easy.

Nothing is neccessary apart from tor, bitcoin address and your SR account. If you're just buying then you don't HAVE to have PGP but it's highly advised.

No chance would I be sending my address out to a seller unless its encrypted. I also don't keep anything on my computer. It's all saved in my VM which makes it easier to navigate and harder to find should there be a raid!

Apparently there are conflicts with Mac OS 10.6.8 and PGP programs, so what we found to be the best solution for us was to do what anonsora suggested and go to;
https://ppgp.sourceforge.net and download PortablePGP.  It's a little stand alone program that works awesome!
