Title: Fingerprints on the packages you ship
Post by: PowerLifter on May 11, 2012, 08:29 pm
I tried to do a search on this, but I couldn't find much. What is the general consensus on how careful you should be with having fingerprints on the packages, and contents, that you ship? My prints are definitely on file. So LE could intercept a package, open it, lift the prints off, and then give me a call. Or am I just being too paranoid?

It will be a painstaking process to make sure you handle everything very carefully, and always wear latex when at home and setting up a package. But it's almost damn near impossible to avoid getting your prints on something when you're in public (such as when getting a stack of priority mail envelopes, stamps, DCN strips, etc, or even when you go to ship the packages, you'll be putting your prints on the shipping material). Can't be walking around with latex gloves, or any kind of gloves during the summer time! Talk about looking suspicious!

Sorry, n00b seller question here. Maybe it's a given already that sellers are very careful about leaving their prints anywhere on the package?

I wouldn't worry about prints on the outside of the box but rather the inside. It's always good to wear two pairs of gloves and even a hairnet just in case. Also if you're going to be using tape be extremely careful because evidence loves getting stuck under it.

Maybe someone can disprove this but the reason I think the outside of the box doesn't matter is because it goes through so many different hands and conditions that most likely your prints won't even be distinguishable if it were to get intercepted.

I always do an alcohol rubdown as to avoid this, but I have often, too, wondered just how thorough they would investigate in order to lift a print. I'm sure there are many variables that come in to play (size, product, being a repeat offender), but I can't imagine that they would spend an indefinite amount of time/resources trying to find one incriminating fingerprint out of the countless unrelated fingerprints that might also be in the system. Unless you have been being watched for some time now, I wouldn't be TOO paranoid; however, I would much rather wipe my stuff down and wear gloves than have that worry in the back of my mind.

Thanks for the input guys! I'm just going to be extra careful with the contents of the package, I guess. Opening up shop soon!

prints don't leave on porous material, Ie cardboard, now on the outside of a bag, that's different.
