In most cases, steep.  It's a schedule 1...  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controlled_Substances_Act#Schedule_I_controlled_substances

Each state has a slightly different Controlled Substances Act so you'd have to look up your state.  But to use Illinois as an example since it pops up in startpage:
Quote
Any substance containing a substance or analog of substance classified in Schedule I or II, but not listed here

Amount    Felony status    Prison Term    Fine

50-199 gm    Class 1    4-15 years    Up to $250,000

200+ gm     Class X    6-30 years    Up to $500,000

Federal penalties can be found in the menu on the left... these are mandatory minimum sentencing.

Quote
Federal guidelines, regulations, and penalties

The Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986 and 1988 set forth federal mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines. According to the Federal Trafficking Penalties, first offense penalties for anyone who manufactures, dispenses, distributes, or possesses psilocybin is imprisonment for up to 20 years. If a death or serious injury is involved there is a mandatory minimum sentence of not less than 20 years, but not to exceed a life sentence. Individuals can also be fined up to one million dollars. In the case of a second offense, offenders can receive up to a 30-year prison sentence. If a death or serious injury is involved, there is a mandatory minimum life sentence. Individuals can also be fined up to two million dollars.

Jesus, draconian much?

I wouldn't even go to jail if I was caught with 50 grams of shrooms. American drugs laws are the worst in the civilized world.

There was a fascinating period of a couple of years up to end July 2005 when the Home Office in the UK found that they didn't have any legislative powers over FRESH shrooms, and they went on open sale in many places. You could go to Camden market in London, check out some nice shoes and rare records, have a good cappucino, and then buy any number of varieties of shrooms from the stalls.

The streets were not filled with zombies. The hospitals were not stuffed to the gills with psych casualties. Western civilisation did not come crashing down in slo-mo to a soundtrack of Dutch gabba. And now they are Class A, equivalent to smack.

Obviously reason and logic won out.

Take care.

you could always argue that you went mushroom picking, and had no idea you would trip testicles if you ate them. but with a record like mine, I could NOT pull that shit off

That would work in Florida. Its legal to posses any amount of shrooms as long as you do not "know" that they are magic shrooms i.e. you found them in the wild or got them from someone who found them in the wild. See Fiske vs. State of Florida. Its legal to posses and grow shrooms in New Mexico as long as its for personal use. Erowid is a great source for drug law info.
