Title: tormail and safe-mail
Post by: string4cheese on October 03, 2013, 10:53 pm
I'm not really an avid forum user but I do read and obviously due to the circumstances, reading more.

Is tormail compromised in anyway? I need to contact a few vendors that use tormail.

Also, I have a Safe-mail.net account. I just tried to use https://Safe-mail.net and at the far right of the URL I see a padlock with a "!" saying security broken. Never had this happen. Could someone please toss me some advice?

thanks,
s4c

You should have spent more time in the Forums. If you had, you would have known long-since that Tormail was seized by the Feds at the beginning of August. If you sent/received any unencrypted emails to vendors (or anyone else, for that matter) they are now in the hands of the FBI.

Safe-Mail isn't (safe).

I did read somewhere about tormail, which is why I asked to confirm my deep, lost memory.

I never used either, just signed up with the same SR name but never sent any messages.

Thanks for the confirmation.

No. The servers are no longer online. They may still be operated by the FBI for forensic analysis. Tormail is dead and buried.

Why isn't safe-mail safe?  What is good to use now?

Use http://f3ljvgyyujmnfhvi.onion (URSS Mail) or http://torbox3uiot6wchz.onion (You can only send emails to other torbox emails with that).

Both use squirrel mail.

It has been reported by sources that I trust, that Safe-Mail turns suspicious emails over to the authorities, which implies that they are scanned for certain keywords. Some people have speculated that Safe-Mail is actually run by the Mossad -- whether that is true or not I have no idea. If you _do_ want to use Safe-Mail, you must bear in mind that the metadata from those emails, i.e. the header information, e.g.: To:, From:, Subject:, etc. are all scanned/recorded, even if the emails are PGP-encrypted.

URSS mail appears to have a problem with registering, at least when I tried it. Furthermore, they're using a Canadian domain registry privacy service -- I, for one, wouldn't count on that for any protection, if I were in their shoes.
