Saw this option in my system tray icon, I did a few searches on the forum but didn't really find anything. Is it good practice to be creating new identities every so often? Or after a specific actions perhaps (e.g btc transfers etc)? Thanks.

It creates new Tor connection circuits. Useful only if you are browsing normal web with Tor and need new exit IP address. Not needed when browsing .onion sites like Silk Road. If You use New Identity, you still can be linked by cookies if You don't restart or toogle FireFox.

if the forum dies here or it's really slow to connect to anything click on new identity and presto forum suddenly works again. also if you try to search for something and get the 'proxy detected enter captcha' bullshit because your exit node is blocked by everything... though you should be using startpage ssl search

I generally get a new identity every hour or couple hours. It keeps you moving and will keep Nomad outta your coins a little better.

I tend to use a new identity when I first boot into Liberte linux, and if/after I visit non .onion sites.
