Hey. You want to get a way to make your favored currency into an account which can then move into a currency exchange account.
Greendot money cards can be moved directly into Bitcoin through Silk Road vendors (like SugarMama or BTC Buddy).
Paypal can be moved into VirWoX.
Dwolla can be moved into CryptoXChange or Mt.Gox.
You can check out Bitinstant too. Do Google searches to learn more about these. There's a lot of options and it depends on what country and currency you're coming from, and what your specific needs are. In my opinion, Tradehill was the best operator, but they closed down at the end of February.

Yes: it's definitely something you need to study up on a bit....it's not so important -IMO- that you understand *exactly* what they are, but some knowledge is vital. This and TOR are the two things that probably keep out more people, but it's also the two things that protect us the most, so we've all had to do some boring plowing thru the info available...I'd check out the wiki, and also, I'd start at the beginning, take a few hours, and go thru all the security forum on here. I did it, and it covers all the problems you'll run across, and you'll also see the rise and fall of bitcoin vendors.
It's an area to be wary of scammers: always check on here, to see if others have used the vendor you are planning on going with. The easiest is probably the 'in-house' vendors: the ones selling right here on the main site, but we've also had some *bad* scammers who made thousands of dollars. But we take our chances. I've bought lately from btc buddy (using moneypak) and btc king (using bank deposit) with no problems, and had my btc within minutes. They'll send to your account on here (that long address that you mentioned), and then when you buy from someone on here, the btc are automatically put into an 'escrow' account until transaction is finalized. (Also need to study 'escrow' haha)
Good luck, hang in there: we all had to go thru this.... :)
