Title: Can your encrypted vpn see your unencrypted traffic?
Post by: railroadbill on September 21, 2013, 08:31 pm
i mean do they hold the encryption keys to their encrypted stream? i ask cause im looking at a vpn but i dont know if i should avoid one in the five eyes countries, cause most of the logless ones are there but doesnt matter much if they dont keep logs if they are tapped by the government or have the keys. so basically if i had to choose, a logless vpn in a five eyes country or a logging vpn in a free country?

Yes they can, it is encrypted from you to your VPN provider so that your ISP and other spying eyes can't see. Then it leaves the VPN provider on the clearweb like normal with no encryption without HTTPS/SSL.

Your VPN can only see as much as your ISP. Your VPN provider basically takes the same role as an ISP does.

Therefore SSL encryption is important.

Definitely get one in some esoteric country. Assume any USA or UK, other 5 eyes VPN is backdoored but also keep in mind that many VPN encryption protocols can be broken anyway.

Good luck.

also keep in mind that if you are in USA or UK etc, no matter where your VPN is your traffic is going to cross through NSA monitored IX's on the way to it. So pretty much you are fucked from traffic analysis perspective no matter what.
