I haven't been able to access for 2 days now, it looks like it's overloaded.
I'm a little surprised they don't have a donation link, it might help them upgrade their infrastructure a bit..

Been down for a couple of days for me too (IMAP error). There are a couple of emails I need to get to too. Anyone have suggestions on a good alternative?

Don't know about alternatives. fastmail was used by quite a few people for awhile, but it's been bought by Opera and has pretty crappy restrictions on free accounts now (all your data gets purged after a month or two of being inactive, for one).
As for just being able to get to your emails, tormail offers SMTP/IMAP/POP3 over TOR, so you can use an actual mail client to fetch and send mail through them, without needing to access through the web interface. Their help page explains how to set up Thunderbird to work with tormail. If you were doing that, you wouldn't be able to send anything with them down of course, but at least you'd have a local copy of your mail that you could access. Though depending on your level of paranoia / security hazard, you may not want to do this on a machine that LE may one day get their hands on without having everything heavily encrypted.

I've used both TM and Lavabit using a VPN side by side since the start and haven't had problems with lavabit yet so I would recommend adding it to your likely candidates.

I've been having IMAP errors the past few days as well. I have been able to access my inbox sporadically - try every few hours.
