Title: Listening vs. Controlling Port in Tor
Post by: yjQ0ESOiM on November 03, 2011, 08:29 am
When I configure applications (such as bitcoin and pidgin ) should I configure them to use Tor's controlling port or the listening port?

According to my Vidalia message log, the socks listener is 9050, while the control listener is 9051.

Control port is so you can control Tor with a GUI like vidalia. Vidalia communicates with Tor over the control port, your applications like firefox or polipo communicate with Tor over the listen port.
