So over in the UK weve been hitting it hard with MDMA for the last few decades, ive never been in contact with my cousins on the other side of the water so im not really clued up on the scene there. However one thing i notices is the name difference...we call it "Mandy"...works great in code when talking of "seeing your friend Amanda" or asking "Is Amanda around at the moment?", i notice Americans call it "Molly", could anyone enlighten me on why? and also how is the rave culture and the general party scene. We have great Teknivals across Europe...google Frenchtek or Czektek to see them. Do you have similar?
Also i stumbled upon this article, maybe insulting im not sure, i guess its meant to be tongue in cheek:
CLEARNET WARNING!!!:

I thought Molly was MDMA and Mandy was MDA.

America's biggest rave is EDC, Electric Daisy Carnival. I've never been but I know it's magical. The only thing is it's getting more commercial and above ground. People not even into the rave culture go because they just think of it as a big party or whatever even though tickets are over $300

Nooooo MDMA is Mandy, has been since i can remember in England and Europe. MDA is relatively unheard of in EU as far as im aware, we have quite a large glut of MDMA and without blowing my own trumpet can call it the best around (best being purest etc). Im unaware of why its called Molly in the states if somebody could enlighten me I would be very happy. :D

Haven't heard Mandy before. I think Molly is supposed to refer not just to any pill containing MDMA, but specifically pure MDMA powder (of course, whether it is actually pure MDMA powder/crystals is another story). I believe Molly was derived from molecule, as in the chemical, to differentiate it from a pill form.

I've always known Mandy as MDMA and Molly as Methylone, until I came here and people were calling MD Molly, which doesn't really make sense imo.

Basically, MDMA has seen a revitalization in the last couple years due to public misunderstanding. Many see "molly" as some new drug when in fact it is just slang for a substance that has been popular for years.
It has entered pop culture more overtly due to a number of references in rap music. A particularly catchy line in the rap song "Gold on My Chains" by Trinidad James stated "pop a molly, I'm sweatin, woo." Recently, molly had been referenced by a number of other rappers and is now desired by the idiot masses who often don't know the effects but want to try it because they heard about it in the song.
This has resulted in a lot of people buying "molly" that is really methylone, 2c-b, mdpv, or some other substance. The actual amount of MDMA floating around the U.S. is quite low. Furthermore, the media doesn't seem to understand that molly is supposed to reference pure mdma and often claims that molly is a mix of dangerous non-understood substances. There has also been repopularization of the old myth that mdma will put holes in your brain.
Ultimately, mdma is becoming increasingly more popular as the edm scene continues to grow and pop culture continues to make references to it. We haven't been as on board as the UK, but we may get there one day fairly soon.
-
Ok Mandy refers to MDMA...crystals. Beans, Ecstasy, Gurners...refer to pills.
As for the party scene, that sounds strange to pay to go a rave! In Europe it is all about the free party and Teknival scene. 100 thousand people taking over an abandoned airstrip, huge funktion1 and void sound systems all for free by party lovers and ravers uniting!!!

IIRC, the UK has used mandy as slang for mdma for awhile and molly originated in the US as short for molecular as a weird way of identifying it as pure molecule wise. The lack of solid naming conventions results in variance from region to region though.
-
i heard "Molly" was short for "molecular" and referred to MDMA when it comes as a powder or in capsules. Eh who knows. Currently the term "ecstasy" has no value at all as a brand name, it can refer to MDMA, meth, methylone, whatever. Some people loudly insist that "molly" refers to MDMA only. How hard is it to learn that term. "I would like some MDMA, please."
BTW there's a great talk on rave culture at matrixmastersdotorg. Oh my God. The first part of the lecture is political and kind of irritating. But when he gets to the part about "dancing the sun up" I was weeping, it's so beautiful.
My main "rave" experience is burning man, which is going on right now, and I'm not there. And I miss it. Funny how I've only really felt at home in a city that is evanescent, that disappears after we go. That's what they say when you get there. "Welcome home." You get a hug. I cry like a baby.

Molly is short for Molecule, known as MDMA. There was a video on abc a while back, an interview with peter jennings. Explains the real effects of MDMA and the history. I'm too lazy to post the link but if you google it i'm sure you can find it.
As far as raves go in the US, EDC and Ultra are the two biggest ones right now. The same production company that throws Tomorrowland is trying to make "TomorrowWorld" the no1 rave in America.

This is pretty accurate. It's widely accepted in my area, if not the whole US that molly is "pure" ecstacy aka MDMA but there's so many idiots out there who pop too much ecstacy than ask what MDMA is... it kills me.

I'll take that as an inviation and pack my bags. Haha jk but that really does sound beautiful and how it should be. Even people throwing raves at abandonded warehouses charge at the door. I prefer to go to shows where I actually know the DJs (I don't mean personally) to make sure its worth my money and not too sketchy.

I like how almost everyone has a different "MDMA came from..".
Popular before because of the rave scene in the 80s-90s, popular now because of hiphop influence and with Miley cyrus and Madonna or whoever is advertising molly. "Molly/Mandy" in my mind now is "capped white powder that could range from M1 to flour". I've resorted to selling pills because at least I can go online and show the person im selling to that "pillreports says it's pure, look at this and decide". It's those assholes who do it for money who fuck it all up. XTC was pure MDMA at one point, now it's not always. Molly was supposed to be pure, but now it isn't always pure either.

always thought about going and giving out on pure mdma to 100 different people that look deserving. I did this with 20 or so at a festival in december. The look on those peoples faces when i told them it was free. I explaned to many that i got it off of sr (maybe unwise?) and that it was very clean and potent. A couple people smoked me out. Doing this boosted my roll a lot. The satisfaction i got was insane!

That was a great thing you did! In the future though, I would definitely not say that you got it off the Road. I would leave it at saying that it was from a trusted source and confirmed via reagent testing (assuming you did test it). Same effect, less risk IMO.

The "rave" scene is America is no longer counterculture, and has been commercialized and in a lot of cases and instances gentrified. It's now something that starts at 7 pm, ends at 2 am sharp, is FILLED with underage kids, guidos and bros and gang kids selling their fake pills are fucking EVERYWHERE, undercover police troll around asking you to buy shit for/from them or sell to them, no one can stay long enough to be sober so people are driving home 10 or more miles fucked up on LSD, MDMA, RC's up the ass, and most sadly alcohol. You can't stay long enough to be able to go home sober, like an actual fucking rave. Now raves are giant parties filled with really awful machinestep/lazerstep that parents drop their kids off at. Then one asshole dies and the papers have a fucking stroke and the police double down on the next concert (not rave).
Now don't get me wrong, there's still a healthy amount of underground raves. Crazy house and techno and of course psytrance and purple dub; non-commercialized invites get you there, word of mouth shit. This scene seems to be soaked with LSD (or what people assume is at least close to LSD) at the moment but this scene really is the only way to get good MDMA any more (or I guess cross your fingers and sell you left nut hoping for a good press to come along).
TLDR; Raving like you/we know/knew it still there, but "Raving" in the USA is now just an all-age dubstep concert.

A good rave is like good mdma, it's always there, you just need to know where to find it

In my area in the UK it mostly gets called Mandy, Mum n Dad or Dizz.
The word molly is pretty shit because I know it refers to 'molecule', which can literally refer to any chemical or substance on this planet.. Don't even get me started on all these celebrities endorsing 'popping a molly', give me strength.
The rave scene in america (from what I've scene of it in anyway, probably not 100% of it I'm sure it's not all like this..) looks shit. Looks like a bunch of fags dressing up like spray painted polar bears and wearing enough wrist bands for a whole city to be wearing shuffling around to shitty commercial progressive house, popping their so called 'molly' and calling themselves 'ravers' and 'plur???'. Wtf?
Sorry for the rant. I'm just so glad the scene we have in the UK/Europe is very much different/better imho. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion but this is just how I see it.

Thank you for the advice! i was less wise at that point in time, and now realize that it was immature to spread incriminating information.

smacks (insinuating that they "smack" meaning are strong). BTW, I like to say thizzle to differentiate between mollys and pressed tablets so good job, seafrog92.

I don't even go to festivals but even a quick search for #mdma shows lots of pictures of what is almost definitely methylone.
At this point there isn't any advantage to even using the term "molly" because it has now become something it was never supposed to be. Everyone is familiar with the term (bad) and it most often isn't MDMA (bad). So just call MDMA what it is: MDMA.
And if somebody tries to sell not-MDMA as MDMA then throw all of that PLUR shit out the window for a minute and kick them in the nuts.

YES. YES. A thousand times YES.
The younger generations should know what the fuck they're taking and also have a respect for the fact that bk-MDMA and MDMA and MDA and 5-APB and 4-MMC are all DIFFERENT DRUGS and therefore do not deserve the same name or nicknames.
I remember when "molly" was pure MDMA suspended in a liquid solution, which ravers would squirt into each other's mouths.
Then it meant pure powder MDMA (which was almost impossible to find back in the days of rolls), then it devolved into whatever powder makes you feel somewhat euphoric. Sad, but just goes to show what dilution of culture does...

America's biggest rave is EDC, Electric Daisy Carnival. I've never been but I know it's magical. The only thing is it's getting more commercial and above ground. People not even into the rave culture go because they just think of it as a big party or whatever even though tickets are over $300
You definitely have a good point here. Although I'm not like some of the EDC vets, EDC holds a special place in my heart. I attended my first rave and took E for the first time at EDC in 09, back in LA. I had no clue what to expect, and really didn't know anything about rave culture. But the people there, the true vets, seriously loved the experience, the vibes, and the whole scene. I had never met such kind and caring people in my life. I went with a group of 6 other friends, none of which had ever rolled or raved, and we definitely looked out of place. But I still remember to this day, as we just got past the security check and all our pills had started to kick in, we ran into a big rave family who sat us down for 30 minutes and gave us the 101 on raving and even gave us rave names. Definitely a better vibe than a lot of the raves I've gone to recently :/

Maan, that's awesome! Haha. I used to want to go to EDC but after seeing how fucking packed that place is and all those people jump the fences to get to the grass (forgot what year), I've decided against it :-\
I guess there's plenty of other big "rave-type events" (as the officer who arrested me at the last big EDM festival show said).
P.S. There are under cover police at those events (at least in America) so don't get sloppy and do stupid shit, guys!

As a side story, my friends and I loved it so much, we ended up going both days, Friday and Saturday that year (09). Then in 2010, the last year it was in LA, we did the same thing.
Anyways, we were actually part of the group that jumped the fence to get to the Coliseum floor. We felt bad because everybody was booing us, but we got in at 5 pm and they already weren't letting people on the floor of the mainstage... There was no way we were missing that experience!

Thank you! Everyone where I'm from thinks they've had the best MDMA produced on the planet, when in reality it's just methylone. I love being the one that can open their eyes to what "molly" is really supposed to feel like. Ever since becoming a member of this community so many people have thanked me for giving them something they were missing out on.
I actually went dry a couple months ago and was going to a big party and wanted to roll with all my friends, so resorted to buying on the streets... Just as I thought, it was fucking methylone. Shit just gave me a headache and made me feel speedy. Fuck people who sell methylone and call it molly.

Can you imagine if somebody got seriously hurt? That was a very legitimate possibility. The media would have been over that so quickly and rave security would be even tighter. I was scared just watching videos of it. Except for when a security guard had somebody in a chokehold and a bunch of people kind of "harassed" the security guard until he let go cuz he knew it could get bad for him...lol. I'm just so glad nobody did get hurt (that we know of) in that and everybody there should feel lucky.

Yeah I'm not going to lie, the drop from the top of the fence to the Coliseum floor was probably at least 15 feet, but we were able to scale down it. My group was actually pretty worried because we had security chasing us, and one of our friends had just recovered from ACL surgery (knee), so he was a *little* (a lot) slower than the rest of us. Luckily he made it down with no damage and no arrests!

That's not the danger I'm talking about. I mean what if somebody in the middle of the crowd had fallen and couldn't get back up? What if people were so packed in that they had troubles breathing? What if they became claustrophobic and began to panic? Hell, for all we know, that could have happened. Even if they wanted to leave, they probably couldn't have. The point is, people were in danger because some other people got there later and wanted to be closer.

Any rave that costs 300 to get in is not a fucking rave. really thats such a shame to hear.

I'm pretty sure Ultra Music Fest down in Miami is America's biggest rave fest. Yes I know, not everyone would call it a rave but it's nothing but EDM and everyone's dancing, partying and having fun. I call that a rave. Anyway I believe it doubled in size just in the past year to over 300,000. That's about the same if not a little bit bigger than EDC.
Also I don't agree with the insane prices either and I realize that most people consider raves to be smaller, more intimate gatherings. However I think it's all pretty similar. I'd love to check out the smaller warehouse raves and such.
P.S. EDC was held in London for the first time this year.

Its international now and you still think it's not the biggest? Haha. It's whatever though. I've never been to it and never plan to go. I'd say Utra is a close second. Anyway, why do we have to pay a shit ton of money for raves that probabably aren't even as good as the ones that go down in Europe? >:(
I've never wanted to travel as much as I have after reading this thread.

Some of the comments about American rappers talking about "molly" got me thinking... you mean that people who don't listen to dance music (whether that be house, trance, techno, whatever...) are taking mdma too?
Shit, I dunno why but I always kinda assumed that, unlike coke and weed, mdma was only used by us lot who listen to bleep-bleepy-bleep music made on computers. Maybe cause I've only listened to trance for the past 20 years I've missed what happens at concerts or non-dance music festivals. I've never liked rap but I grew up listening to Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, GnR, etc... and I can't imagine anything worse to listen to when rolling on mdma. How can you reach for the lasers at a heavy metal concert, and do they sell glowsticks when you go to see Eminem?
Do people really listen to anything other than music that is "wholly or predominantly characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats" when using mdma?
Radius
ps - I stopped using the word "rave" after Castle Morton... it just sounds so 90's.
-
Rave sounds so 90's? I wonder why? Haha. Possibly because that's when people started going to them in the states?
EDC and Ultra are festivals. I'd like to go one day but the cost is outrageous. The security is bullshit and running into or being paranoid of cops just kills the vibe to me. Raves still happen around where I'm at but knowing DJ's and making your own music/beats is the best thing in the world b/c the house parties are always off the chain!
Man I miss my tables. Spinning vinyl is so much more fun than going all digital. I've seen so many people who call themselves DJ's who are really nothing more than CD players with a laptop that are human. Sad really.

Yes, although now most people in the US that think they are taking molly aka mdma are actually taking methylone. I guess you could blame this on increased demand for "molly" and plenty of supply of methylone from China.
Also, some of those hip-hop artists are now incorporating EDM into their tracks. In the case of trap music EDM producers are incorporating hip-hop samples into their EDM. Trap is likely past its prime but EDM adapts quickly do how knows what is next.

Ultra is international as well, in many countries. Either way yeah they're probably pretty close. And I agree, I'd love to travel and check out the international scene.

I totally agree about EDM fests being ridiculously expensive. I only made it to Ultra one year when I was already living somewhat nearby and I probably will never be able to again. They announced right after this past year that the GA tickets alone for 2014 would be $500. Yeah, fuck that. However it was an amazing experience nonetheless.
More affordable EDM fests do exist though, when they're just getting started out. There's one called Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Summit that's like $200 for three days. Still it won't have the more obscure acts and DJs that don't travel to the US much like others do (Chase & Status, etc.)
I've been wanting to check out real, smaller raves forever. I just have never lived in an area that had them. Maybe someday...
