Title: Peyote buttons
Post by: thomasm13 on June 29, 2012, 02:41 am
Is it at all a possibility that someone will come upon peyote buttons? Actual peyote buttons, sliced and dried. I'll buy pounds of them.

i would like this too.  i think there's netherlands based clearnet sites that sell peyote, and thought I remembered seeing real peyote buttons in the "smart shops" when i was in amsterdam.  I remember finding it odd that a plant indigenous to my native continent is only available to me through european sources

i heard something a while back about how people were consuming peyote faster than it is being grown and the supply is dwindling.  horticulturists and ethnobotanists were encouraging people to buy a bunch to raise in addition to what you plan to consume.  but i'm not sure if that was just some urban legend or something.

Yep Peyote is an endangered species and ever dwindling in the wild, largely due to over harvesting, so it is a great idea to grow one's own (and a possible reason why synthetic mescaline may be advantageous). Very slow growing cactus, but I have found if you buy mature plants you can harvest them in the traditional, sustainable Huichol fashion, by cutting the cactus above ground level leaving a bit of green as there is negligible mescaline or other alkaloids in the root. In a year from doing this six of my Peyote have regrown new tops, all now have side pups growing, and a few have even flowered. So if one had enough it would be feasible to harvest them sustainably I think if one wasn't eating them every weekend! Very hardy plants and not like they take up much space, and they actually quite like to grow bunched up close together without much space, and they are easy to pollinate and breed with.

I would love some peyote live plants or even seeds to grow my own.

Yeah ditto the seeds. The problem with synth mescaline is that it's so goddamn expensive. With peyote, I have resources to grow large scale surreptitiously and save a shitton of the ever-ruling moolah.

you would have better luck driving to big bend and trying to pick it youself.  and even then you probably wouldnt find any.  from seeds it takes like 12 years to grow into something you can eat, and you would need to eat atleast 5-8 to really trip, makes it not really worth growing unless you are really patient i guess ;)

These are legal in Canada and I would definetly be intrested in some seeds.  Time isn't so important to me and am willing to wait the year or so.

Ehh. I've always had the sneaking suspicion that the only way to get real Grandfather Peyote is to head back to the Four Corners and revisit some old friends anyway. Guess next road trip is planned... It's a shame, I really could use some archetypal PEA action right about now. Too much 25x's

yeah ive heard that you can get them off various indian tribes or trade them for other things.   but if you are up to hike a little bit off the trail you can still find em big bend, just be sure to pack alot of water ;)

You can fing the seeds http://www.riverssourcebotanicals.com/products/product-details/Lophophora+species+mixed-24

or

http://www.kadasgarden.com/Sp.Lophophora-williamsii.html

And they take a long time to grow.

Naa, L. williamsii is definetly a slow cactus but not 10-15 years.  You're thinking flowering times.
a year for a cactus and then another 5years to flower. I'm not doing this to sell but for my own personal use.

i guess you could eat them at 5 years but they would still be tiny, like smaller than a golf ball so you would have to eat like 30 of them.  after about 10 years then they will be as big as a baseball and that is the best time to pick em.  you always cut them at the base, if you do it right 4 will grow back in the place of the one, and it grows back a little faster, like you can reharvest after 8 years.

i just looked at your first link, and it says they are a mix of seeds of peyote and false peyote,  peyote = good, false peyote = make you puke a lot ;)

false peyote is more abundant and has a much more star like pattern but when they are both small it can be hard to tell.  anyway you dont wanna grow and eat this.

the kadas garden site on the other hand has some really nice looking peyotes.   really the best place to buy peyote if you want to grow it is peyote51.com

All of the links are outside US, makes sense as theyre on the clearnet.  Anyone have seeds/plants in the US theyd be willing to sell me?  I want to start a small personal farm by grafting etc.

@Auguest West, Northeast US, planning on relocating to AZ within the year.  Want to have a bunch of cacti, including legal species.  Just want to have some san pedro and peyote in there as well for both a collection and recreation.  ;)  I dont even really know where to start for price though.

I was wondering if there was any interest in peyote on SR. I've been maintaining a little garden for ~8-9 years. It's such a slow growing plant (from what I read when I was first putting my garden together, plants can take 15 years to reach maturity ie accumulate the levels of alkaloids necessary to produce a significant experience), just been letting them grow and mature. I probably have about a dozen cuttings that I've rooted, in addition to my 7-8 "larger" plants. Honestly though, I'm not sure anybody would be interested in what I have, or that I'd be interested in putting together any transactions. I have no interest in selling my larger plants, or cutting off from them any buttons for consumption. Possibly I'd be interested in selling some of my rooted cuttings to people that are interested in starting their own gardens (as I got into it originally not to get high but to help preserve the species). Anybody interested, feel free to PM me to discuss, can't hurt (though I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, there's a lot to consider; vendor account etc)
