Title: TrueCrypt, VirtualBox, Ubuntu... Now what?
Post by: +Europa on September 19, 2011, 08:24 pm
Hello fellow paranoid SR users!

I have followed a guide to setup an Ubuntu (standard) system on a VirtualBox, on an encrypted TrueCrypt volume. So far so good.
Now I have a few questions:

 - How do I do the whole PGP-thing on Ubuntu? Is there a piece of software I can use to simply create a key for myself and encrypt/decrypt messages using key supplied by others? Do I even NEED software to do something as simple as this? I tried some stuff, but it failed miserably.
 - What's the safest way to do the BitCoin thing? What software should I use? As far as I can read, it's safest to have multiple wallets that you can delete once used in order to cover your ass. Should these wallets be installed on separate TrueCrypt volumes?
 - Is what I've done so far even safe enough?

I'd really prefer some stuff with a GUI, but I know that's probably too much to ask for.

And to other people interested, here's the link to the guide: http://ryantrotz.com/2011/08/how-to-secure-your-files-using-truecrypt-and-virtualbox/

... Oh, and hi SR community, I'm new here  ;D

The link you provided shows how to make a virtual machine on an encrypted volume, but there's nothing about making your network traffic anonymous.  You must have used Tor to get here (please don't tell me you used Tor2web -- use the Torbutton plug-in for Firefox).

I'd follow the instructions on Torproject.org before following the advice of this Ryan Trotz guy.

If you want PGP bundled into your software you might try TAILS or Liberte Linux, they both run on a USB flash drive and have PGP built in. Liberte Linux has an encrypted volume you can use to store all sorts of confidential stuff.

Okay thanks, I'll try the Liberte Linux thing instead of Ubuntu, looks pretty good. And I've been using the TOR browser bundle, so no worries there.
