Title: GPG key de-crypting?
Post by: OldManShearing on August 21, 2012, 10:53 pm
I know how to import others keys and use this for ordering on SR etc... but I came across a man I wanted to speak with who said that any messages from him will be "signed with gpg key A9900069"

So I sent him a comment and told him to reply to my email, and indeed his response is encrypted with what looks like the full block you normally see when importing a vendors key or encrypting your adress.

What is key A990069 and how do I use it to de-crypt?

He said it would be signed with that key, not encrypted. You must have given him your key if it's encrypted, so your key to decrypt it.

I get what your saying but it didn't help me solve my issue.  I never sent him my key or anything all I did was send him a comment and he wrote back to me with the classic....

-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----
Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux)

hQEMA9eJ/vDGpvS2AQgAhqsFCv6Np5IRmBpGDXIsJmIQDK/P1WM5Ub39zfsHWKVY
xlLgZ8/dcL................
-----END PGP MESSAGE-----

So if there is no encryption here like you say (I don't know what else I would call it....) and he just signed it with his 'key' how do I read what he wrote to me?

Use *your* key. He encrypted it to *you*. When it's decrypted, you'll see his signature on it.

I pasted the message into textedit on mac then went to services and selected decrypt text.

I see that "my" key comes up but it asks for my passcode.  I dont ever remember making one, and I tried everything I could possibly think of.

Am I screwed here?  How can get around knowing (or not knowing) my own passcode?
