Hi Peeps,
I set up a key yesterday using the PGP software bundled with Tails. I then saved the key to a usb and have imported it to Tails this afternoon to decrypt some messages I have received.
My two issues are, when I copy the encrypted message the clipboard doesnt realise its encrypted and wont give me the option to decrypt?
Secondly if I randomly copy something to the clipboard then apply my key I can encrypt it however when I try to decrpt I get a messge saying gpg: decryption failed: secret key not available?
I have been battling with this for a day or two now and would love some assistance if possible. :o :o :o
Do I need to generate new keys and if so how do I stop this from ocurring again?
Thanks

Not gonna be a whole lot of help here but I do recommend spamming your 50 posts ASAP and sending this post to the security topic(outside of the newbie forum). There is plenty of knowledge on this exact topic going around up there. Good luck mate.

Has the msg been encrypted with your key or the vendors?
Save the encrypted msg to notepad etc then go into your pgp program select the key you want to use the go to file click decrypt file then select the place you saved it

Are you sure you're exporting/importing your FULL key and not just your public key?

Figured out with your help. I wasnt exporting the full key.

COULD YOU SHARE HOW YOU ACCOMPLISHED THIS. IVE BEEN STUCK WITH THE SAME PROBLEM

Wow, relax! Instead of right clicking -> export, do right click -> properties; in the properties window somewhere there's an option to export.

thats the ticket
r cick key select properties then select "details" tab then export complete key and you are sorted.
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks so much you guys. I made the same mistake. Unfortunately my original key is one and I don't know how to reimport with the private key. But that's cool, I'll just make another. This time when I back up I'll use the Properties option! :)

In your original PGP program you need to find the option to export both of your keys--your public and private. Usually when you casually export a key you're only exporting the public key which you publish so people can encrypt messages to you. Exporting your private key as well usually takes a few extra steps because of the security risk involved in having your private key floating around in clear text.
After you find the option to export your entire key-pair save it and use the Tails PGP key manager to import your key pair. You can test to see if it works by opening the text editor and encrypting and then decrypting a test message to yourself.
