Title: Address Formatting and Address Verification
Post by: Oneiros Distribution on July 28, 2013, 09:16 am
I'm not sure if there exists a thread for this but I was not able to find one by searching, the closest I could find was the thread Address formatting - CAPS: http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=122453 but it only covers if to use CAPS or not. I would like to hear from both vendors and buyers alike what Address Formatting is preferred, why and what it's based on. I don't have any preferences myself but I did find a couple of web sites which have their own definitions:

* Address Formatting

http://bitboost.com/ref/international-address-formats.html#Formats
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Address_%28geography%29#Address_format
http://www.addressdoctor.com
http://www.courierdirectory.ca/user-resources/world-mailing-address-standards
http://www.postadressglobal.com/services/address-formatting-and-structure
http://www.upu.int/en/activities/addressing/postal-addressing-systems-in-member-countries.html

I added the concept of Address Verification into the thread as I imagine some vendors with hundreds of orders per day might use systems similar to these:

* Address Verification

http://www.melissadata.com/address-verification/index.htm
http://www.qas.com/address-verification.htm

i checked it up on the royal mail site. you can't get better advice on address formatting than that.

The links in question for Royal Mail:

http://www.royalmail.com/personal/help-and-support/How-do-I-address-my-mail-correctly
http://www.royalmail.com/business/help-and-support/addressing-your-items-western-europe
http://www.royalmail.com/business/help-and-support/addressing-your-items-rest-of-the-world

They are indeed quite good, but they have a very limited range of regions listed.

I think I'll go with the Universal Postal Union: http://www.upu.int/en/activities/addressing/postal-addressing-systems-in-member-countries.html Main reason being it's not a commercial entity which is just going to disappear. With an All-CAPS policy for addresses it'll be easier to verify addresses with the Verification Letter concept: http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=177984
