Title: What is the best album by the band Slowdive?
Post by: spasmolytic on September 13, 2012, 02:54 am
If I lean more towards their stuff like Alison, Avalyn, Blue Skied n. Clear, Catch the Breeze, Spanish Air, Etc. What album would you recommend for me to start with?
What are some other good shoe gaze bands to check out also?  I already know about My Bloody Valentine & Lush though

I consider Souvlaki to be one of their best albums, ever.

Swervedriver isn't strictly shoegaze, but some people lump their first album in that category since it's pretty dense a la Loveless. Mezcal Head is my favorite album by them though, definitely check out the reissue with the extended tracks. I caught one of their live reunion shows a number of years back, and I consider it one of the best concerts I've ever seen.

I'd also check out The Jesus & Mary Chain, specifically Psychocandy and Honey's Dead, those are my favorites. Chrome by Catherine Wheel is also definitely worth checking out.

Shoegaze is definitely an interesting category of music, since people have called some pretty diverse bands shoegaze, including Jesu and Failure (both recommended btw, but more of a metal vibe)

If you want to get REALLY out there, check out Spacemen 3, psych rock from the 80s that was a big influence on the aforementioned bands. Happy trails!
