Title: Please help a struggling GPG4Win encrypter!
Post by: woolywinkle on April 23, 2012, 08:29 am
I've been trying to use GPG4Win to send encrypted messages to vendors using their public keys. 2 out of 2 failed so far.

So, I'm trying to work out at what stage of the program things go tits up.

Running tests locally resulted in successful encryption and decryption of test messages, up to the point where the incoming "message.text.gpg” is decrypted just fine after entering public key recipients password.

The trouble starts when I transfer the encrypted contents of the same   "message.text.gpg" file to another empty text file, in an attempt to simulate the transfer of the encrypted data to the vendor’s web form message field on SR.

To start with, when I open the already proven "message.text.gpg" in Notepad, it shows a block of mostly rectangular box-like characters. I copy and paste these  to an empty text file but when I try to save the file I'm warned that  saving it in ANSI encoded format will corrupt the data and that I need to  save it in UNICODE format, which I then do, saving the file as a text  file.

When I then try a test decrypt of the resulting file, I get the message:

"Could not determine whether this is an S/MIME or an OpenPGP signature - maybe it's not a signature at all".

So then I add the file extension .gpg to this same file and try again. This time I get:

"Decryption Failed - No data".

This may not be an appropriate simulation test of what happens when I transfer the encoded data to a message to vendor on the SR site but it's the best I can come up with ATM.

The reason I think the problem might be at this transfer to form part of the process: I saw that transferring the rectangular block-like code into the "Message" field of the web form caused them to change to a form of characters like Egyptian cartouches interspersed with Chinese or Japanese-like characters. Should this happen?

Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

Hi goangod,

sorry to hear that you have similar problems. Maybe this thread will end up helping us both.
I've looked at everything I can find on YouTube and found nothing that covers this particular problem yet.
Same goes for the documentation. I'll read it again though to make sure.
It took me a solid week of studying GPG4Win to get this close. But If I can't send encrypted messages that work to vendors, I'm still nowhere with it.

Kind regards,
