Title: Is it any bit sketchy to use MtGox from home..?
Post by: Pyryn on November 20, 2011, 10:30 pm
Just asking because I saw someone post in an earlier thread about using MtGox from a public place vs home, is it sketchy at all to use Mt Gox from home? I don't particularly see why it would be, but would love for someone to clarify that for me on the off-chance that it is.

It definitely shouldn't be. I was into bitcoins before I had even heard about SR and used Mt. Gox to trade between dollars and BTC. If LE were to check my computer all they would see is a small time speculator. As long as you don't send funds directly from Mt. Gox to SR you should be fine.

Wellllllllll I already did that once not thinking of it being a problem. Now I'm quite a bit sketched out. Should I be worried after one transaction involving SR? Where would you suggest I send my coins first before sending them to SR?

Get your own bitoin client and wallet and send them there first. It's the safest place to keep them since a third party wallet can always collapse (see mybitcoin). Plus, mt. gox did mention that they would cooperate with authorities if they were asked and having them sent to your own wallet rids them of any responsibility.

Slightly confused as to how I'd go about sending my BTC from a private wallet to my SR account.

I'm assuming I'd make an offline wallet using bitaddress.org, send the coins from mtgox to there, THEN send the coins from that address to SR?

After looking over it more, less confused.  Just want to clarify--I'll use the "withdraw bitcoins" section in my SR account, combined with my password, to draw my coins into SR from my private wallet?

I'm assuming that's what it is as it all seems pretty simple now, just want to make sure.

Edit:

Actually apparently that's not how it works. Would someone care to explain this?

simply install the bitcoin software and run, this is your own wallet, use this bitcoin address to withdraw any funds, it may take some time for the coins to show up in your wallet if its the 1st time you've ran the software as it needs to catch up with the current block in the chain and the block that your transaction took place in for it to show up.

next time go from mtgox to your own wallet then SR or u could mix it up a little using multiple wallets.

hope this helps :)
