Title: Shipping to apartment more risky than house?
Post by: ConcernedCitizen on October 05, 2011, 06:05 am
As the title states, I am wondering if anyone knows of additional risks when shipping to an apartment versus a house, and any good practices to maintain in lieu of such risks. Assume that shipped items are too large to fit in the designated mailbox for an apartment. I have seen boxes left in front of doors, and boxes left in the apartment office.

For starters, a risk I can think of is having items delivered to the wrong apartment and opened by recipient, exposing possibly illegal items associated with the intended recipient's name. This is probably more likely than deliveries to the wrong house due to the additional address line specifying what apartment to ship to. To mitigate this risk, triple check the address you send the seller, and also reference any mailing address format guides for verification (ex http://bitboost.com/ref/international-address-formats.html).

Any input would be appreciated.

Yes there is a possibility of the package being misdelivered but I doubt the householder would open the package.

How often do you open misaddressed mail? I have heard (maybe its just a rumour) that it is an offence to open somebody elses mail.

In Australia if a package is too big to fit in the letterbox a card is left with delivery details. This card is taken to the post office and the package can be claimed which is obviously the incriminating part.

Yeah, the AusPost "i'm sorry we missed you" card...

Really annoying if the article wasn't under your name in the first place  :o

like dukes mentioned misdelivered mail could happen.  i know when i was in an apartment complex I ordered stuff online and twice (that I know of) my package was misdelivered.  The DCN would say delivered but there was no package in my box.  So what ever happened with those items I do not know.  Someone is probably playing my xbox games.

I hope this isn't more risky. I live in an apartment. I guess it's all on how much you trust your mail person. I've ordered lots of free samples from those cheesy coupon and sample  places, so i think my mail person is pretty used to putting the odd envelopes in my box. lol
