Title: Is it safe to access tor through the regular browser with .to extension?
Post by: FoxyTorGirl on November 06, 2012, 02:20 pm
I've just noticed that it is possible to access the tor services if you type the address and then add a .to after onion and connect to the site, how safe is that?

Unsafe.

The owners of onion.to can read all of your traffic as cleartext and know your real ip (if you use a normal Browser). It basically breaks everything Tor offers. If you have logged in to Silk Road via onion.to, i recommend you change your password.

But if you are just reading SR forums with it you should be fine.

No. It is not safe. Don't ever use it. It bypasses all the security mechanisms that make Tor safe.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I thought, didn't use it for anything important...
