Title: REWARD if anyone can fix my problem
Post by: freedome on July 29, 2011, 06:15 pm
Hi,

I opened up Bitcoin just as I usually have for the past few months and it fails to open and I get this message:

EXCEPTION: NSt8ios_base7failureE
ReadCompactSize() : size too large
C:\Program Files\Bitcoin\bitcoin.exe in AppInit()

Does anyone know how to fix the problem? Is there anyway of getting to the Bitcoins in the account?

I'd really appreciate a response as I have quite a bit in there.

Anyone who can, leave your Bitcoin address and I'll flip them a Bitcoin if it works..

Regards.

1 backup your wallet
2 reinstall newest version of bitcoin

It appears something has happened to the Bitcoin executable or some file it depends on to start.

The good news is that you most probably haven't lost your wallet so just do as kind bud recommends:

FInd your wallet:

It is probably located in C:\Users\<UserName>\Appdata\Roaming\BitCoin where <UserName> is the name of your user account. (this also is assuming you are running Vista or later, if using Windows XP then post back and I can tell you where to look -- or you can just google it yourself)

This file is called wallet.dat. Move this file to a CD/flash drive/different folder on your computer and reinstall the Bitcoin application (get the Windows installer from bitcoin.com).  Once you can open Bitcoin again you will see a list of different addresses and no money.  This is because bitcoin has made you a new wallet.

Get your old wallet.dat and copy it into the folder where you first found it, replacing the newly created wallet.dat. restart the bitocin application and you should be up and running.
