Title: Absinthe a.k.a. "The Green Fairy"
Post by: r6991420b on January 02, 2013, 02:43 am
I really want this product to be listed because I have heard many artistic talents are unlocked with the use of this drink.. Oh who the hell am I kidding.. The only reasons I want it is because it was done in the movie "Eurotrip" and because the messed up and grotesque music artist known as Marilyn Manson greatly compliments it.. I heard the drink is legal in parts of Europe.. Maybe some of you Europeans can gain a buck or two from needy Americans like myself on the SR!! :D :D

You can buy absinthe in the US now and yes it has wormwood and is the same as European absinthes.  Just head over to your local large liquor store and ask them or have it shipped to you from a US based online liquor store.  Enjoy!

Currently produced absinthe contains only up to 45 % alcohol, whereas the traditional recipe, the one used by artists, contained 70 % alcohol. This version is still available in Czech republic, or at least it was the case a few years ago when I smuggled a bottle into my country. Imo there's nothing special about absinthe, it's no more unlocking than any other drugs. Just a myth really.

My happiness was soon replaced with sadness when I researched a little further.. Checked wikipedia and it says:

"The importation, distribution, and sale of absinthe is permitted with respect to the following restrictions:
The product must be thujone-free as per TTB guidelines,
The word "absinthe" can neither be the brand name nor stand alone on the label, and
The packaging cannot "project images of hallucinogenic, psychotropic or mind-altering effects.""

I don't exactly know what "thujone" is, but I'm guessing it's the the psychedelic ingredient found in the original Absinthe.. So I mean, it really is legal in the United States without that substance but it's like saying minors can drink beer when in reality they can only drink alcohol-free beer..

You didn't read close enough, their guidelines allow up to 10mg Thujone which is more than is in most absinthe recipes.  Trust me, what you can get here is the same as anywhere else.  Read closely.

In 2007, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) effectively lifted the longstanding absinthe ban, and has since approved many brands for sale in the U.S. market. This was made possible partly through the TTB's clarification of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) thujone content regulations, which specify that finished food and beverages that contain Artemisia species must be thujone free.[108] In this context, the TTB considers a product to be thujone-free if the thujone content is less than 10 ppm (equal to 10 mg/kg).[109][110] This is verified through the use of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry.[111]
The importation, distribution, and sale of absinthe is permitted with respect to the following restrictions:
The product must be thujone-free as per TTB guidelines,
The word "absinthe" can neither be the brand name nor stand alone on the label, and
The packaging cannot "project images of hallucinogenic, psychotropic or mind-altering effects."
Absinthe imported in violation of these regulations is subject to seizure at the discretion of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.[112][113]
Beginning in 2001, a product called Absente was sold legally in the United States under the marketing tagline "Absinthe Refined," but as the product contained sugar, and was made with southernwood (Artemisia abrotanum) and not grande wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) (prior to 2009), the TTB classified it as a liqueur.

http://www.originalabsinthe.com/

I have used this clearnet site many times to buy absinthe for myself and friends. I haven't ordered in a couple years, but they were my go to site for absinthe when I was going through that stage of my life :)

Nothing, its pretty unique, the drug itself does not do anything, you have to take it with alcohol, and all it does is change the drunkenness.

I would not compare Thujone to any scheduled drug.  It's affects are over blown and mythical.  It is a fun drink though, and worth a try.  It is also usually high in alcohol content so you will get drunk at least.  I have read that it does no good to drink absinthe until you get drunk, but rather have two drinks and see what the Thujone does to you.  I would not expect much though.  The two drinks I have had did not make me trip out or anything.  It is more of a novelty of the past that is fun to try than a drug that will take you on a trip.

I would like to add that many people find the drunk/high state of absinthe to be superior to any other kind of alcohol, the residents of Paris in the 1890's certainly agreed!
Real Absinthe is now available on the Silk Road!

10mg is NOT enough to do anything. The presence of thujone is illegal. It's just been determined that less then 10mg is so little that it's worthless. Kind of like how some non-alcoholic beers still have .02% alcohol in them. It's in there, so it's still "beer." But it's 100% worthless for seeking the desired effect.

Dieluted, do you have any idea what the "recreational" level of Thujone would be? Do you have any information on pre-ban thujone levels?
I am fairly well read on the subject but would love to know if you have any information on the matter to offer up here.
