Title: Signing a message
Post by: IAMWalrus on July 08, 2013, 03:58 pm
I have read "Do not sign a message to a vendor" but I am not clear on what this is referring to. Can someone please explain?

Thanks!

I'm going to guess maybe it means do not sign the message with PGP (but rather encrypt it). Signing the message is usually done to guarantee to the recipient the identity of the sender (provided the recipient has and trusts your public key).

Does anyone here sign their encrypted message? It seems unnecessary...

Sometimes when signing a PGP encrypted message, it creates a problem where the recipient cannot decrypt it. It's happened to me before.

Personally, I think signing messages is unnecessary..

Probably not much reason to sign it unless you're trying to prove your identity to the vendor who already has and trusts your public key. I could maybe see it of value for discussion between vendors, but for just general customers placing orders I don't know why a vendor would really care.

Ok well I just learned how to encrypt and decrypt messages and have practiced with a fellow board member and I have it down. I must be good to go. Thanks for the replies.
