Title: installing tails problem
Post by: isallmememe on August 29, 2013, 07:08 pm
i've burned the tails.iso onto a dvd but when i run it to transfer to a flash it just opens up this express burn program with a window prompting me to 'select a new disc to burn'.

anyone got any ideas where i'm going wrong?

It sounds like your trying to transfer the .iso directly to your usb. You need to boot that burned dvd on your pc. Once booted then you need to clone it to your usb stick from inside the tails OS.

no i've been opening the D: drive folder and clicking the tails.iso file to open it. from what i read that should open tails and give me an option to transfer to a usb.  it doesn't tho, it just opens this express burn program and prompts me to answer which media type i want to burn to. here's a screenshot:

i'm wondering if removing the express burn program from the computer might help. i'm sure it came from whatever software was used when burning the .iso file to the dvd. my neighbor did it for me coz my laptop don't have a dvd/r drive on it atm.

It sounds like you burnt the .iso file to dvd in like file mode. When you open that dvd up is there a single file on it that is just the .iso file? It should have several files on it.

Use a program like Imgburn. Its free and once installed tell it you want to burn a disc image file. Point to your .iso thats on your hd still and that should do it.

would i still have room on the dvd i already used to do it again? i don't have another disc handy atm and its only a dvd/r, not dvd/rw. i can probably go to my neighbors now and do it again if it is.

If you're not using a rewritable disc you can't use it a second time. You'll need a new one.

so can you  not add more to any free space that's still on the disc? ..i've never really had any need to burn dvds before, i know you can't write over data that is already burned on a dvd/r, but not sure if you can add any extra once you've burned something already.

If I read that correctly and according to the image it appears you may be trying to load it from your operating system. If so, that isn't how you do it. You need the disk in your computer, restart and boot from the CD. If it just goes straight to your operating system, then you need to enter BIOS and choose to boot from your CD/DVD drive. On my system F11 pulls this menu up that allows selecting to boot from the CD/DVD drive.

Then tails will boot. Then you can insert your USB and install to USB.

yeah i tried that first but it didn't do anything, it just went on to load windows after the disc spun for a minute. i guess i'm gonna have to burn it again.
