Title: Anti Drugs propaganda: man dies trying to smuggle lsd thru airport security
Post by: TravellingWithoutMoving on February 24, 2012, 11:31 pm
i heard this story years ago that a man stuck sheets to his back hoping to sneek them through security, he supposedly died from overdose as a result of obsorbing it when he sweat.

I thought i'd try and find out whether it actually happened or was just an urban legend of sorts, and found that the story or idea had been resurected as one of 'SpikeTv's' propaganda stories.
Its called Spike TV series: 1000 Ways to Die.

"Spike TV series: 1000 Ways to Die:
Spike TV's 30-minute anthology of people dying in spectacular, gruesome and often stupid ways. Names were changed to avoid lawsuits, but the stories are based on actual events— supposedly. Each episode also includes commentary from various experts on the science behind the deaths. The final story of each episode, up until season one, shows actual footage of dangerous situations that almost ended in death, along with interviews with those involved, who survived. The series aired two pilot episodes on Spike in May 2008, with Thom Beers (owner of Original Productions, the company that produces the series) narrating. Ron Perlman took over as narrator when the first season began regular weekly airings in February 2009."

"A Viacom-owned network dedicated to every single male interest possible, as you might've been able to tell by its edgy name. Basically the Rated M for Manly Network, though some may say they lampshade this often enough to venture into Testosterone Poisoning and invariably into Unfortunate Implications..

Originally, it was known as TNN, a country music program launched two days after rival CMT. The Nashville Network was originally owned by Gaylord Entertainment, alongside Westinghouse Broadcasting (an arm of Westinghouse Electric Company). Westinghouse, after becoming CBS Corporation, purchased all of TNN (and CMT, which Gaylord bought in 1991) in 1997. While it focused mainly on music videos, TNN included original programming such as the game shows Top Card, and outdoor, lifestyle and talk shows targeted to a country audience.

Viacom bought CBS in 2000, and merged TNN and CMT into MTV Networks. In order to avoid redundancy, TNN was retooled into The National Network, or The New TNN, which tried to go beyond the southern demographic, and was Viacom's second attempt at a "general entertainment" channel (the first was USA Network, which they were once a part-owner of). Its most successful original program was WWE Raw. While that still sounds like a part of the original demographic, The New TNN also featured reruns of shows such as Baywatch, Diff'rent Strokes, Miami Vice, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Three's Company.

In 2003, the network title was completely changed to Spike TV, or simply Spike as it is called now. The name change was delayed a little from a lawsuit by director Spike Lee, who claimed that viewers would associate the network with him. Unsurprisingly, the Spike network won the case. It did set up an awkward situation where a party at the Playboy Mansion celebrating the new network had to have censor bars and bleeping all over the place to remove all mentions of "Spike" until they got their issues ironed out with Mr. Lee."

"Spike's "Drugs Are Bad" episode "Dead on Arrival":
A drug smuggler tries to sneak LSD through an airport by soaking his shirt in it and wearing it. His perspiration causes the LSD to be absorbed into his system, enough to cook his brain."

i wasn't able to find "Dead on Arrival" on youtube but found a similar episode, and wasn't able to view it as it seemed to be restricted to US:

No way. From what understand there are chemists out there that have dropped 1,000-10,000's of hits or 10-100 sheets worth, also some guy on here claimed he "printed" his infant child (as a thumbprint!); if those people are alive then I'd imagine this is bullshit..I also think the LD50 for LSD is like 16-20mg (not mic, but mg!) per kg (2.2lbs)

However I did hear that some kid in the 70's shot like 400mg of LSD intravenously, thinking it was speed, needless to say he didn't make it.
I'll try to find the source for that.

EDIT: found a source for that, still doesn't mean it's true  ;)
"Related references (taken from p 70 of Stafford's Psychedelics Encyclopedia):

For the 320 mg of LSD injected intravenously under the mistaken idea it was speed (this killed the user and appears to be the only instance of death by LSD overdose), the reference is: Journal of the Kentucky Medical Association 75: 172-173."

...there's also one about hydrocodone, a guy & a gal in a sauna....take hydrocodone and "die" from overheating / heatstroke as the water temp went up to 150 Centigrade.

Haha the version I heard is he went insane forever and he taped LSD tabs all over his body.

"Enough to cook his brain" I can just imagine the annoying condescending tone the voice over presenter probably used, I've seen that show, really amateurish.

Did anyone watch the Drugs Inc. on Hallucinogenics? about that cop who went to help clean up a raided LSD lab in Cali in the 70s? 80s? cant remember

He shaved just before going in and his neck was exposed, he apparently took thousands of hits worth of doses at once, he came out and one of his eyes was 5mm dilated the other 10mm haha

He knew something was wrong at first because he could hear music playing and it was the clearest music he'd ever heard, once they took him to a hospital they for whatever reason decided to leave him alone in a pitch black room

He did almost die though, this is the thing, not a chemical reaction to the LSD but a physical one, he started having a seizure and a nurse came in and gave him a valium which helped but he still hallucinated for another 48 hours or so

NOW He's fucked up for life, he can read a sentence understand every word but at the end of the sentence not tell you what it all means, walking down the street wants to turn left his legs go right, shit sounds fucked up.

^^

that I'd believe. idk about the physical but the psychological (?).. LSD does powerful things to the mind
I was going to say, i could see someone suffering some massive phschological fallout that could create physical comlications, like someone having like a massive panic attack and suffering a heart attack or something!

there was a movie in the 90's, SLC Punk, where a character has a vial liquid in his pocket which later breaks and seeps into his skin...bitch of it is, I've had people tell me that exact story under the context that it happened to a friend of a friend of theirs. It's just like that story of the girl who thinks she's a glass of orange juice and cant tip or she'll spill, or the guy who thinks he's an orange and is constantly afraid of being peeled...it's all bullshit

More likely he died of cardiac arrest from tripping fucking balls in an airport with dozens of security around him.

The LD-50 listed for LSD on erowid is 12mg but I think this is highly conservative amount. I have heard other estimates of ~50mg. I am pretty sure if you take even 1mg of LSD per KG you are going to have a pretty substantial chance of death. The pharmaceutical index for LSD makes it extremely non-toxic, but I personally think you may very well be risking death at doses as low as 12mg, and I sure as fuck would never take a thumbprint.

- he would have unable to focus on any sort of conversation nor make much sense for sure.

- shieldz also posted what he found from the kentucky medical journal and Stafford's Psychedelics Encyclopedia... ::)

ähmm... I'm petty sure that a thumbprint is  about 30-50mg...so 1mg per kg is pretty safe.
Not many dead 'family' members yet ;)
correct me if I'm wrong...

It is believed that a normal human being would have to take up to 3g to reach LD50

BTW
A few years back, there was a group of guys at a GOA festival, that went through other peoples tents and got a bunch of cameras and other stuff.
Among that stuff was a bottle of vodka...the three guys took a sip...
Turns out it wasn't vodka but LSD...
they were brought to a mental hospital and at least one of them never left again.
Nobody died...physically...

That show is so fucking stupid. They can't just have an episode that says "A woman dies after being electrocuted when she steps into a puddle next to a light pole with a loose wire", they have to say "A SUPER HOT lady is out on the town for a night of LESBIAN EXPERIMENTING and is WAAAYY DRUNK AND DID WE FORGET TO MENTION HER TITTIES ARE HANGING OUT OF HER SHIRT??? BUT anyway so shes walkin down the street with her HOT LESBIAN GIRLFRIEND and she dies after being electrocuted when she steps into a puddle next to a light pole with a loose wire".
Or how about the one where the guy gets stung to death by hornets? Oh wait, I meant he gets stung to death by hornets because his super hot sexy girlfriend tells him he can't fuck her until he takes care of that pesky hornets nest in their shed.

More than half of the content of that show is COMPLETELY irrelevant to any of the information, lol. I don't know if this airport scenario is actually true, but chances are more likely that it isn't.

Speaking of lesbians and LSD... I have to admit I actually watched an episode of Ellen back in the day.
She was supposed to be a guest on a talk show and decided to wear Jerry Garcias old jean jacket, which unbeknownst to her had a few sheets sown in the back.  The lights made her sweat and she was tripping balls during the interview.  It was actually a funny episode.  Pure fiction, of course.
