Every time I try to search I get this message:
"Your last search was less than 5 seconds ago. Please try again later."
I should definitely not be getting that message.

It's because you're connecting through TOR. It should read "A search was performed less than 5 seconds ago from the IP you share."

I MIGHT be wrong, but I don't think SMF does it based on IP. I'm pretty sure it's user based.

SMF uses IP address to tell who has done a search, and since this is a hidden service all traffic goes through a loop-back IP to the actual web service 127.0.0.1, so you will get the message about a search and if you are trying to post. They are there so the web server doesn't get bogged down with request.
