Title: MAC address only identifer to a network? And any link to serial numbers?
Post by: romford on June 25, 2012, 09:59 pm
So is a MAC address the only identifer of a comouter when connecting to a public network? I am still planning my switch to unnecessary security overkill and haven't really found a straight answer to this. Also, are MAC addresses connected to serial numbers? Say a computer that was purchased with a built in network card - can a MAC address or anything else point back to that serial number and so the computer itself?

I am of course planning to spoof my MAC address when the time comes, but want to know if there is anything else that will identify my computer when connecting to a public network. Am a bit reluctant to research too much on clearweb as I am paranoid of my search history so hoping some more informed people here might be able to help. Thanks.
