This is just a bit of a ramble about my experience to see if it is consistent with others.
I received my order of Modafinil (Modalert) yesterday and had 200mg at about 1pm but didn't really think I 'felt' anything so had another 100mg at about 5pm. I am now still awake now at 4:30am but not sure if that is just because I have been busy, placebo effect or the drug...
Since my perceived lack of effects from the Modafinil I did some additional research (thought I had researched it pretty thoroughly before) and found that about 25% of europeans are 'immune' to the effects of it. I also read that take a week of dosage to gain the 'full' effects of it; also that eating a low-carb diet can increase the effects (I am thinking this is bull**** though!). I am a brilliant procrastinator and got the Modafinil so I can focus on uni work but didn't really have the single mindedness that I have read about in some places. Other peoples' thoughts on their experiences would be brilliant!
I am now thinking that Adderall might be more in-line with what I am looking for but sadly that isn't domestically shipped in Australia and don't want to chance customs with it.

That sucks, I'm looking to order some Modafinil myself
I will say that for what you're looking for - you may want to try vyvanse. It's really awesome for the single-mindedness and task completion, and I have worked for 10+ hours on a project without even noticing it. I highly recommend it over even adderall XR, but that's a matter of personal taste :)

As far as I'm aware (and what fits with my personal experience) is that you shouldn't feel any 'effect' as such when using Modafinil, Modafinil is only a study aid in that it enables you to in part forestall succumbing to the cumulative negative psychological, neurological and neurochemical effects of long waking periods. You therefore, know you are tired and getting more so but that pressing need to rest or sleep seems always one step further away, as long as you keep redosing concentration can be maintained with standard effort.
It is not an amphetamine like derivative such as Ritalin so no high can be felt, and upping your dosage will do nothing much more than make you edgy/unable to sleep well, unless your tolerance has grown.
Adafinil is its predecessor and some people have more success with that than Modafinil.
Mod is prescribed more often than not for conditions such as Narcolepsy, and/or to those who are struggling with sleep apnea, seasonal disafective disorder and the evil 'night shift blues'.
