Title: Advise: do weekly/monthly 2nd storage backups of pgp keys & SR/Tor data
Post by: TravellingWithoutMoving on January 18, 2012, 11:56 pm
there is a need to do weekly / monthly backups of the pgp and essential data saved as you use your Tor solution for SR etc.

advised to backup :-
- get into a routine of saving all your little notes into the same top level folder location hopefully on your encrypted drive / usb drive...
- don't use the default 'My Documents' and 'photos' as windows wants you to save files into...

1. manual export of public & private keys of certs you've imported into gpa / kleopatra / or your gpg app of choice, file extension .key    (?!)
2. backup of gpg / pgp encrypted messages which are probably text files of extension .asc
3. probably manual export and save of email messages in thunderbird or your email client (also backup the email directory.)
4. export / backup of Aurora / Firefox bookmarks

manual or automated backups of the top level folder of all the above, obviously when you're ready to insert another usb drive

5. backup of selected config folders of the security apps you have running; type up program / app names in notepad and record the special directories needing backup.

HIDE / STORE THIS BACKUP SOMEWHERE WHERE NOBODY WOULD FIND IT IF THEY DID A TOP DOWN SEARCH, ANOTHER APARTMENT MAYBE...

 ;)

One handy trick if youre very paranoid: instead of a standard flash drive, you could use a micro-sd card. There are adapters that it slides into which allow you to plug it into a usb port and it functions like any other usb drive (all very cheap on ebay).

Except that afterwards, you can remove the card and it's so small it could be hidden just about anywhere that no one would ever think to look. How about taped to the bottom edge of one of your doors? Who would ever look there?

Thinkgeek even sells a modified half-dollar coin that is hollowed out and can accommodate a micro-sd card:
