I'm new to SR and spent about a week learning pgp, bitcoin, mt.gox, etc, etc.. It seemed that bitinstant was the best way to handle SR funding. The conversion rate is about 12 usd to 1 btc. I've since seen ads on SR from vendors ( btkoin today). for 119.00 usd to 22 btc, which comes out to 5.40 usd to 1 btc., or less than half the bitinstant/mt.gox rate rate. Is there really that large of a conversion difference between vendors?

thats a scam...
current rates can be monitored on bitcoincharts.com/charts
or by going to mt. gox which will post the average - which is actually about 12.9 usd/btc instead of 12
(dont sign on to mt gox through tor though, which will cause your account to be locked)

Try sending him a dollar but i wouldnt expect much back in return :s
You seem to have a good grasp on what to do, just check out the big name exchanges and run a few searches before you actually pay any sort of money to anyone. try bitcointalk.org for info
