Title: Help please! Tails OS with bitcoin.
Post by: Dominatrix on March 31, 2012, 02:25 am
I'm a noob to both bitcoin and Linux.

Step by step help to get me going would be awesome.

I'm running the latest version of tails on a bootable flash, and would like to store bitcoins on a seperate flash.

Thank you!

Just use strongcoin.com or something similar if you're using tails.
Technically you could backup wallet.dat everytime you boot tails to your encrypted cloud drive or usb drive but I don't bother, bitcoins can easily be laundered with a $4 VPS and your regular desktop bitcoin-qt

Are you selling? Then I can advise you. If you're just buying, who cares nobody will bother to track you down. No trafficking amounts on SR really

Yep, Tails is great: keeps me honest, so I won't start getting lazy and saving stuff that could hurt me.   Mostly need to have an online database I can get any needed passwords and btc from...I've always liked swissdisk.com, keep any needed passwords, data,  and also can use lastpass.com if u want, tho there are even more hidden spots, if u need'em.  I've also kept btc in a couple of instawallet.orgs, bounce'em around there.  But with Tails, I always need to have the links and stuff I'll use real handy, bookmarks and passwards and  btc all should be rite at hand on the old internet.  Privatix is pretty cool too, or you could check  out liberte linux, and get some persistent data storage, if u feel safe with it...

Could also use the Armory to backup your coins encrypted offline, then just manually enter transactions in Tails through tor

I was planning to use tails for a sellers account , anything else  i need to know ?

i was thinking about using a prepaid internet card(3g) thru a tethered/wifi second hand mobile phone with orbot(tor for android)+gps spoofed with software and connect laptop with tails thru that. also was thinking about encrypted flash storage but net storage would be way better. if my ip was exposed 3g can be tracked to around 300m area wich in my case is plenty.

but safe storage in internet is abit iffy? what if a site goes down and all my information/coins with it?

do i need to have a bitcoin wallet program for tails wich i install every time i need to move money around or is that what bitcoin armory is for ?

im also abit confused about using tor in bitcoin exchange/wallets is this advisable or no ?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, yeah: I bounced between leaving things stored hardware that I could thro away in a pinch vs. the internet with all the entails...and at first I saved everything on a flash drive, OS and also a folder with pswds and such, encryped...but eventually I opted just to use tails for anything on main forum, along with a good online site: swissdisk is great but there are others...main thing, to keep this all safe, is to have an encrypted folder with all my bookmarks and pswds encrypted, now this means I'll have to have a couple of passwords memorized to open folder and such: all pgp of course...I just have a song beginning or two, to open the website and the GPG files...

btc same thing: I keep my btc in an instawallet link, which is in encrypted folder...I do all btc online anymore for different reasons...

I just want it so if my house burns down--or I have to thro everything off a cliff into a lagoon, that no matter where I"m at, I can pull down a tails app, and get online, and get all my gear....is it totally safe?  Of course not.  Everything has tradeoffs:

As soon as I open Tails, I have about five minutes opening the apps I'll need on Tails, pgp is already there, but anything else I need, I just install quick, then get to my website, and download my encrypted folder with all my stuff...

as far as your IP hookup, sounds good, I just have an old netbook I use, somewhere not here...

Thanks for your replies guys  ;D Strongcoin is 100% legit?  Is there any other security measures I should be aware of with bitcoins and SR?

Nobody knows for sure...if you read back in the Security forums, you'll see that we are all over the place on just how careful you need to be.   Takes some effort to be consistently secure, and most people after a while, probably get tired of it, unless they are just by nature paranoid.  We just don't know...no bit busts that we know of...and many of us, like me, just post on the forums....that's not illegal...but btc, where you keep them, how many places you want to shift them too before you send them to SR, all that, people talk about it, but it's hard to get a definitive answer.

If we ever do find out the answer, it might be too late for many of us.  Obviously better to err on the side of being *too* cautious, than not cautious enough...but it's human nature to get lax...

When you generate a strongcoin address, you save the private key.
Then if their site goes down you still have access to the coins. You can manually enter the private key into Electrum the tiny bitcoin client, and retrieve them all. Can log in using Tor no problem.

Technically you could do this with every strongcoin transaction, and not have to pay their fees :P
But I like their service so give them money lol.
