Title: Is PGP messaging necessary?
Post by: deadkndys420 on April 25, 2012, 12:26 am
So Im pretty confused on pgp, public keys etc.

My question is that is it really necessary to use PGP when communicating with the seller?

i mainly use pgp just for sending the seller my home address, so that way no 1 can see the information

Alright so just to make sure I understand how this works.

I want to buy something I place it in my cart and I send the seller the "-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----"  and my passphrase correct?

you send the generated pgp code that contains your address with your pgp code

Bugger.

So I'll go through that guide and set myself up with PGP.

Problem is when I've requested my first order, I sent my address without using PGP via the messaging system.  I'm not worried about the legal repercussions of "getting caught", more just the privacy one and possibly the seller not communicating / cancelling the order.

Is it a major risk having sent my address unencrypted?

When i first started using PGP I downloaded cryptophane, it made the process pretty easy.

yes it is. The vendor might not care, but it's more whether you want to risk exposing yourself. Maybe you're not concerned because laws aren't as draconian in the UK than they are in the states. If so, consider yourself fortunate.

SR should at least provide a courtesy warning during address submission on the FORM page that address info should be encrypted.

Oh god...no this is incorrect.   Facepalm....so ver very very incorrect.  you dont encrypt it with your key....your key is for when people want to get encrypted messages to you.

Copy their public key.
Open Notepad
Paste
Save assadasd.txt
open GPA
click import
navigate to assadasd.txt
click ok
click ok again
click clipboard on  right side of Gpa menu bar
type your name  and address
double check your name and address
check it again
press encrypt
select assadaasas key that you just imported
copy entire block of PGP message
clear your clipboard
paste in order form on SR
send
