Title: How the hell to GnuPG v2.0.17?
Post by: Philfry on July 13, 2013, 05:59 pm
I have no freaking clue how to encrypt a message. Internet searches give me files with no fucking executable and instructions that make me feel like I've never used a computer before. I found online encryption sites that were out of date. How do I use someone's public block to encrypt a message?

I have the same problem. I read that Symantec bought GnuPG and so I downloaded their software but it is in Greek or something because it makes no sense.

Also, in the meantime before I can buy anything, anyone know who's blow is the best here?

Go to Wikipedia  and find "User_Tim Starling_Gpg4win tutorial.pdf".
Go to " Gpg4win.org " it might be a better solution (and it's free) or PGP4USB (didn't use so I'm not familiar with it) both are given equal weight by others more skilled. Good Luck!!!

if it's a commercial company, the feds have a backdoor key - that's a given

1.  Go to  <http://www.gpg4win.org/download.html> and click the download button.
2.  Once downloaded, open the <gpg4win-2.1.1.exe> file and click install. Also, during the install process, you will be asked what folder to save it to, as well as to select/check the boxes of what you want installed.  Leave the boxes checked that are already checked by default, and also check the box next to "GPA."  I think you click a "next" button or something similar after that.
3. Once installed, it will ask you where you want shortcut icons placed.
4. If it doesn't open automatically after being installed, go ahead and open it.  I cant remember if by default it automatically creates a key for you, so lets pretend like it doesn't.   Click the button on the top menu bar that says "Keys", the click "New Key"
   > After selecting new key, it will prompt you for your name (you don't have to use your real name, most people use their SR names).
   > After typing your name, you will be asked for an email address, and then a password/passcode.
   > Once finished entering your password, it will generate your new Key (I save it as a notepad file).  Save this somewhere that you won't forget.

5.  Once you have your new key, you are ready to encrypt/decrypt messages.
6.  Click the button on the top menu bar that says "Clipboard."  This will open a new window.  This is where you type and/or copy & paste messages into that you want to encrypt.
     > Once you've typed in practice message and are ready to encrypt, you will click the button on the top Clipboard menu bar that says  "Encrypt."
     > Once you click the Encrypt button, a window of keys will pop up (your key and all of the keys that you've imported...... but at this point it will only
show your key since you haven't imported any yet...... I'll get to that in a minute)
     > Choose the key that you would like to encrypt the message with.  Since you haven't imported any other keys yet, select your own key for
practice.   (However, once you do import other keys, remember that only the person who has the password to the key that you select will be able
to "Decrypt" and read the message)
     > After this you will see that your message has now become encrypted.......

I'll follow this post with how to import the other keys...

To import keys from other people (usually you'll be getting vendors keys so you can encrypt your address with them).

I've listed my public key at the bottom of the following instructions for you to use for practice... (Also there is an entire discussion on PGPs that Scout started.... Which is also where I learned this)

1. Copy the public key that you wish to import.  (Make sure you begin copying at the beginning of the "-----BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----" and copy until the very end of "-----END PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----"

2. Once copied (Most vendors who use PGP have their key's listed on their profile pages), go back and click the "Edit" button on the top menu bar, then select "Paste" from the dropdown menu.  Once you Click "Paste" the program automatically imports the key that you had copied.  (Please note that you will not actually paste the key anywhere.  You're just selecting paste from the "edit" menu)

3.  Now you have just added a key to files, and you can now encrypt messages with it. (Again, please remember that only the person who the key belongs to and/or whoever has the password to that key will be able to decrypt the message)

I hope this helps.....  I know this shit can be a little nerve racking...

H Jack909,
Recently had to reinstall the PGP for Windows package. I'm trying to practice messaging via GPA which I didn't install the first time. If you don't mind, pls message me so I can try messaging you back. Thx.

Once you have downloaded the program...from my notes:

1. Copy users key, paste in Notepad and save file
2. Import key by selecting Notepad
3. Open clipboard and type your message file you just saved
4. Click encrypt
5. Select key you just imported
6. Copy encrypted message and email or PM user

I am new at it too but found it pretty easy once I got going. You may PM for practice as well if you like.

Also, I forgot to mention that when you're using GPA to decrypt msg's, you need to copy the msg that you wish to decrypt and paste it into the GPA clipboard (No differently then copying/pasting into a word file)

Once you've pasted it and you see the encrypted msg on the clipboard, then you hit the "Decrypt" button on the top menu bar.  You'll be prompted to select a key to decrypt it with.  This is where you'll select your own key (since this is the key that encrypted it, and you have the password to this key)

Hope all of this helps...

Jack

Hi Walrus,

I just now saw your post on importing.....   I wanted to let you know that you can skip the step of pasting into a notepad file and saving it before importing.   Instead, Once you've copied the key that you want to import, just click the "EDIT" button on the menu bar and select "PASTE" from the dropdown menu.  By doing this, it automatically imports what you had previously copied, and saves you time and space......

Anyway, both ways work, but GPA saves the imported key for you anyway, so the notepad files would just be xtra..

OK guy. 1st AWESOME post. It is a big help for us noob's.

Now everything is going great until I try to import a key. I copy the PGP msg and then click paste but I get the error "No keys found".

Any ideas?

Hey Newguy,

Make sure that you are copying a "public key" and not a PGP msg.....  Also, make sure you begin your copy at the first "-" in the "-----BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----"  and complete your copy at the last "-" in the "-----END PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----"

There may be other ways to do it using different programs, but if you're using "GPA and/or GNU Privacy Guard," this should work for you...

Hey Newguy & Vince,

I'm not sure when you posted your last questions, but I was probably logged off, so I apologize for the delay....

Newguy - I'll post my key at the bottom of this post.  Once you import it, write a msg, encrypt it with my key, and post it.  I'll let you know if you did it correctly and I'm able to read it...

Vince - To open a PGP message (It must be encrypted with your key for you to open it.  For example, if you post your public key on here, I'll write you a msg and encrypt it with your key so you'll be able to read it...)
