Title: How safe am I?
Post by: Eg3asdh6tggfdaw on August 18, 2013, 04:48 am
I use tails with an encrpyted persistent drive. So I use TOR by default but I use my home wifi. I don't use a vpn or anything. However I did browse silk road reddit a little bit on my main windows OS and then just with tor (again on my windows OS). I have since created a different account with  new account details.

Also, can you browse the "clearnet" on your tails usb, such as the silk road reddit or marijuana youtube videos? Provided you never login to facebook or anything like that.

Thanks

You're being very safe. You're using much more protection than a lot of users here. :)

And yes, you can.

Ok thanks. I don't really get why people post all of those clearnet warnings. What is bad about visiting a non-onion page with TOR?

And I guess I'm being paranoid as they could match my cookies to my name/address and flag me after googling silk road openly on my windows OS at first! ... but then I remember how massively incompetent the US federal government is and what a mess of a bureacracy it is

Clearnet sites are much more "track-happy". You could leave many traces on the site, and some sites openly steal your browser history. IP's are also FREQUENTLY logged more than you think on clearnet sites. I don't visit any clearnet links in a darknet browser, I feel it's safer not to.

Lastly, why try to track down that one SR user using hardcore encryption and covering his tracks very well, when they can bust all the idiots that use onion.to and openly brag about buying drugs online?

Using Tails is a good choice. I've installed it to a USB stick that I could easily discard/destroy.

If you're using Iceweasel, be sure to disable scripts with the NoScript plugin, and manage you cookies with the Cookies Manager. I've visited some clearnet sites with my darknet browser, but maybe that's not a great idea.

Also, disable JavaScript by going to Edit -> Preferences -> Content and untick Enable JavaScript.

I still need to move to tails. right now I'm still keeping all my logins and pgp stuff inside an encrypted disk image.  It works fine but for example tor browser bundle and specifically windows was the target of the recent attacks by LE.  May setup a vm first just so I don't have to reboot to use it.
