Title: How do I decrypt GPG on a mac?
Post by: TheFunGuy on August 14, 2013, 03:42 am
Hi everyone, I just switched to a mac and am trying to figure out how to decrypt messages using GPG Keychain Access. If anyone could help me out that would be great. I understand how to decrypt files but cannot seem to figure out how to decrypt a simple message.
Thanks

If you are already comfortable with decrypting files with GPG then you can simply save the text into a text file to be decrypted and use GPG to decrypt that file. If this does not work post back and I'll look more into the intricacies of using GPG on a Mac.

If GPG on a Mac works similar to Linux then you might be able to run the following to get it to work.
gpg -d "The text which you wish to decrypt here"

The -d flag stands for decrypt similar to -e for encrypt.

If you go to the Mac's terminal and if you are running GPG and not some other PGP software you should be able to open your terminal from Applications > Utilities > Terminal and then decrypt the data if you save it into a plain text file. If the file is called info.asc or info.txt run from the this terminal:
gpg -d info.asc
or
gpg -d info.txt

Do you have gpgmail or something similar? Can you just paste the message into a blank email and decrypt from there?

It might also be worth checking this out as posted by Wadozo:

Damn! Yeah I get a message into textedit and select all, right click, go to services and it brings up openpgp: validate, sign, decrypt file, encrypt file, show info, reveal, and open. None of which will decrypt the message

Just to make sure that we have all the bases covered, is the data that you're trying to decrypt signed to be used with the GPG key associated to your Mac system or is it associated to your Windows system? If it is for your Windows system you'll have to make sure to transfer the private key to your Mac in a secure manner, if it is indeed your Mac's system then I don't think that I can provide any more suggestions due to being quite unfamiliar with OS X, sorry for wasting your time if that's the case.

Edit: Have you tried holding "Shift-Command-D" with the text selected in TextEdit?

Now I feel a little dumb. Just shut down and restarted my mac and it works like you all are saying! Thanks and +1 to you all!
