transfer it out to an instawallet and then back?  or is this overly paranoid?

The bitcoins aren't linked to you in the first place because you never actually purchased them. Another person is just transferring bitcoins to you. There is not even a link to the moneypak because you (presumably) purchased it with cash. I feel that extra step is unnecessary.

According to the back of the MoneyPak card, "this product is tracked", I guess if they wanted to they could get the security footage from the store where you purchased it. But other than that it's anonymous.
