Title: Security threat, network map
Post by: lookout on April 14, 2012, 12:45 am
Just a heads up to everyone to check their Tor network map before doing any funny buisness on Silk Road

I pulled into a local wireless hot spot a few weaks ago, fired up Tor and checked the network map
There were no lines going out into the world, yet I could still use the Tor network.  I got spooked and went some where else

A few days later I went to the same place fired up Tor, and same thing, no network lines out into the world.
So I said fuck it, dicked around on a few non SR onion sites and 5 minutes later I see a cop pull into the general area iM in as if looking for someone. I puled the laptop battery out right away and moved on

So Im thinking its a Tor law enforcment trap site..........look at your Tor network map before doing anything

it basically shows where the communication is going, usually it hits a few different countries and multiple sites..

The network map only shows lines if Tor can guess their location. It uses some geolocation database to do this, but it is horribly out of date and doesn't have many of the newer nodes in it. Nothing to worry about.

This is correct. I believe the GeoIP database is even missing in one of the Tor Browser Bundles for Windows. There's nothing to worry about. If you can reach a .onion site, then you are definitely using Tor.
