Title: Best antidepressant / anti anxiety supplements?
Post by: yokes101 on July 24, 2013, 05:18 pm
I have been off my ADs for a few weeks now and im a little on the moody side to say the least!
I don't really want to go pump myself full of SSRIs again so anyone know any effective mood improving supplements?

I have tried a handful already but nothing has made much difference... Open to any suggestions.

Rubidium chloride seems like an interesting mood improving supplement, but it'd be pretty hard to find. I wouldn't take any SSRI's but other antidepressants like tianeptine or selegiline though if you can. 5-HTP is also a good supplement for that but shouldn't be mixed with SSRIs, if you've been off for a few weeks then it should be okay.. There's also St John's wort but it doesn't work very well and lithium but it can be a little dangerous.

i would recommend trying kratom (a plant in the coffee family) that has pretty strong antidepressant and antianxiety effects. works quite well in my experience!

Ill look up Rubidium chloride. Yeah avoiding any serotonergic supplements just in case so things like 5HTP are out.
St John's wort is illegal in Ireland and if doesn't work it's not work the bother importing it.

Litium? Had no Idea it had antidepressant qualitys! I'll look into it, Also how dangerous we talking here?
Some thing new...

Yeah I have been looking into kratom, It sounds great! The only thing that is holding me back is the fact its an opiate, I just don't want to cross that line cause there no coming back... i'm addicted to enough stuff as is!

I feel as if a lot of my generally issues can from a general lack energy and motivation so I was thinking modafinil could help?

What about SAM-e? Its been recommended to me as an antidepressant and I've seen it on the shelves at health food stores. I don't know anything about its neurochemistry, tho.

yes, kratom is an opiate, but it's rather unique. it doesn't cause physical dependence and has actually been used to treat opiate addiction because it alleviates withdrawals. it has more antioxidants than green tea and is known to stimulate the immune system. i'd say it's healthier than drinking coffee everyday. low doses will provide more sustainable energy than caffeine. it's a definite mood booster, never fails to clear my mind.

I'm going to recommend Modafinil, especially if you are experiencing lethargy and/or you have trouble getting up in the morning. You may find that alleviating these symptoms helps your overall mood and therefor pulls you out of your depressive slump.

Also, whatever you do, don't drink if you are depressed. I've been there and done that -it doesn't help... it just makes it worse.

I've actually had really good luck with St John's Wort.  For me, it alleviates anxiety and depression, and I like that unlike SSRIs, I can go on and off it at will and it doesn't interfere with my ability to take more mind-altering substances.  I'm really surprised that it's illegal in Ireland.  I guess that being the case, it might not be a practical option for you, but if you get the chance I would still recommend trying it sometime.

My lethargy is off the charts and getting out of bed is a challenge most days! So Modafinil sound like it could be very helpful, any tips to get a prescription for it? I like my doctor to know what I'm on.

Well I drink almost everyday! I never knew how to handle my anxiety so drank and drank and now I have a really hard time trying to get off alcohol...

Really? It might to worth a try, it's not expensive so I guess why not. Sorry it's not illegal it's just prescription in ireland. It's a long story but the Irish medical industry is f*cked!
So what dosage would you take day to day?
