Title: Meerkats
Post by: pander602 on February 08, 2012, 11:03 pm
I'm looking to purchase a young meerkat, preferably male.  Any availability?  I do understand the difficulty involved with keeping meerkats as pets, but I'm confident that I can provide an ideal home for up to three.  This is in the southwestern US.

As cool as this would be, this might fall under the category of animal cruelty and things that SR doesn't allow on the site. Main concern would be the issue of delivering the meerkat...

I am worried about the possibility of cruelty.  I don't want to contribute to the illicit trade of meerkats, which certainly does result in cruelty, or a best, severe mistreatment. I was hoping to find a breeder in a country without legal restrictions on owning such animals and then arrange humane passage to the US.  I do realize this is a long shot, and I will not accept any offers that seem to ignore the well-being of the animal.

I can appreciate that; I wish I knew of anything that would allow you to do that. Have you looked around on the clearweb?

I can get you a meerkat, not sure how it would stand up to vacuum packing and international airmail though. If you want I can try for you.

Meerkats are hardy creatures, but vacuum packing could be too much.  I realize that meerkats are legal to own in the UK and Japan.  However, because I cannot think of a foolproof way to ship a meerkat from either of those places to the USA while keeping the meerkat alive, safe, happy, and unconfiscated, I suppose I'm really looking for someone who already has one here and is willing to part with it.

Note: stealing a meerkat from a zoo, which is really quite easy based on recent news stories, is not a viable option for me.  This is more like kidnapping than adoption, and I certainly don't want to upset a thriving and content meerkat mob.

On a similar tip, could anyone sort me out with a Koala in time for valentine's?   ;D

Naw, I wouldn't vacuum pack a meerkat.  Maybe try coating it with something like peanut butter or coffee grounds to throw off the meerkat-sniffing dogs.
