Title: 2 Ideas to address the Finalize Early problem
Post by: lemonjam on June 07, 2012, 05:54 am
I'm a new buyer and I find the idea of finalizing early extremely dodgy, however I understand the reason why a seller would request it for a new buyer. I think the risk to both buyer and seller could be mitigated in two ways:

1. An official finalize early mechanism should be added. It should be possible to see a sellers cumulative feedback specifically for transactions that were finalized early. Currently it seems like its easy for a seller to build a good reputation selling to buyers with a decent history and to scam new buyers after making them finalize early and leave a good rating. If there is a separate score for FE transactions then experienced buyers will know to take it with a grain of salt, but new buyers will have some evidence that a seller deals honestly with new buyers who take a risk as well as others.

2. The buyer should be able to pay a deposit to SR which is lost if negative feedback is given or an order not finalized. Sellers could then request that new buyers "insure" their order by a certain amount. For example a seller selling an item worth 10BTC might require that new buyers pay an additional deposit of 2.5BTC. The buyer would have the 2.5BTC credited back to their account if the order is finalized and positive feedback is given, but would have to forfeit the 2.5BTC in order to leave negative feedback or to dispute a transaction. This allows a new buyer to hold the seller accountable while still providing a strong (and variable) disincentive for new buyers to scam sellers. Sellers would be free to specify the deposit they required (and to compete on that basis for new buyers).

I really think that those two things would remove the need for sellers to ask buyers to finalize early, which is a practice that is begging for scams.
