I am trying to figure out if I can send bitcoins to Mt. Gox, and if so, could I use that as my backup bitcoin wallet or if others had better results with a different service.
Thanks, your time is appreciated and I know others would find your information useful as well.

Yes you can send bitcoins to Mt. Gox. Add Funds => Choose a funding method => Bitcoin. That'll give you an address to send to.
From what I've read, you shouldn't use Mt. Gox as a wallet. Honestly, I don't know exactly why not. My suspicicion is that Gox is a large target for hackers. I'm not saying it's not secure (Gox is very secure), but I feel that if you were gonna make a list of the 5 bitcoin sites most likely to be hacked, Gox would be on the list.
I would use something like blockchain.info. Security is very high. Your wallet is only decrypted on your computer, so not even the server owners have access to your funds.

Gox works with LE, that's why you shouldn't do direct payments to or from SR. for your own security you shouldn't do direct payments from any bitcoin exchange to SR, pass it through a few wallets and/or bitcoin fog first
