𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernMay 31And today I wake up to the pleasant news that they fixed it! It's still bad, but at least now it's not the single worst & most broken website for copy-pasting basic metadata...
What a pity they don't make billions of dollars annually & so can't afford decent publishing tech. 😢

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernMay 31Then they asked for video of it not working in Chrome, after I had repeatedly said it worked in Chrome, for a bug report whose title was "authors cannot be copy-pasted in Firefox"!
After I explained this request was nonsense on stilts and utterly irrelevant, they went quiet. pic.twitter.com/O4LTyNxCbM

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernMay 31They then sent me a customer satisfaction survey, asking if I was satisfied.
I was not.
I also checked the "may contact me for further information" option.
They did. Their suggestion was that they had tested Chrome & it worked (as I already said); use Chrome. Uh... no. pic.twitter.com/9iJVG5lklt

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernMay 31I eventually got tired of this & contacted them back in January explaining the problem, including screenshots & Firefox version (up to date, a week old).
I got a reply suggesting that I upgrade my Firefox. 🤦♂️
5 months later, I got an email saying they were unable to fix it.

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernMay 31One off-site improvement: Firefox users can now copy-paste author lists on Elsevier websites (specifically Sciencedirect.com).
Yes, that didn't work before, for several years. You couldn't select the authors on the HTML, you had to go to the PDF or find another source!

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernMay 28People sometimes wonder how you make a 'quince'.
But it's simple: a quince is anything which planted yields a quince.

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernMay 26Note that this would not be covered by Altman's statement x.com/sama/status/17… as it is not a 'clawback' or 'equity cancellation', but a "redeem or sale" "for cash equal to the Fair Market Value." (Although possibly still covered by the NDAs/gags?)

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernMay 26Q for OA employees: in §7.8(g) gwern.net/doc/reinforcem… one agreed OA can cancel your PPUs for "fair market value" at any time.
One also declared to the IRS at grant time they were worth $0 & never updated that $.
What stops OA from forcibly buying someone's vested PPUs for $0? pic.twitter.com/qLWEurl7hH
𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernMay 23This is a parable about:
- design
- training humans
- training humans to use AIs
- and training AIs to use humans
Exercise: list major reinforcement learning algorithms & explain what they would learn from the robot dog (eg. policy gradient, DQN, tree search, behavior cloning)

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernMay 23After the demo, the teacher said they would never use it.
"Why? Too boring?"
Yes, probably, but look at what it would teach the kids.
"What?"
That you should deal with annoying people & friends by hitting them on the head to shut them up, and to hit them to start playing.

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernMay 23A design/AI parable: an AIBO robot-dog company pitched special ed teachers. They explained it was safe as a class pet, since not alive, infinitely patient, & easy to use: kids just bopped the head to turn on/off, then played with the friend with wagging tail, petting, bowing etc

But then, a bird missed pooping on my head by a few feet yesterday.
To live is to risk.)
